Trainers for walking? (That aren’t walking trainers.)

Any recommendations for trainers for walking, please? Not huge distances, an average of five miles a day*. I really don’t want proper walking trainers if at all possible.

Have been wearing Skechers but they don’t seem to be offering enough support and are making my ankle ache.

Thanks!

*Walking to work, before anyone calls the lockdown police.

I wear ASICS Gel Kayano for running because of stability and support, and when they're done for running, they sometimes get relegated for walking. I've also had great success with Nike Pegasus (which, if chosen carefully, can sometimes look less like a technical trainer and more fashion).

thedevilinablackdress · 11/01/2021 07:38

Nike air max have good arch support of you need that. I didn't get on at all with adidas shell toes, too flat.

Mrsbclinton · 11/01/2021 07:42

Asics trainers are brilliant for walking. I have a slightly wide foot and never have any problems with rubbing or blisters.

WrongKindOfFace · 11/01/2021 10:06

More suggestions - thank you.

Another vote for Asics. I also average about 5 miles a day and wear Asics Gel Kayano, originally recommended by my physiotherapist after a herniated disk, and then (coincidentally) recommended by my podiatrist. They have great support and protect my dodgy lower back and knee. They are not cheap, although Asics does have an online outlet store.

New balance are my latest ones, got them from Sports Direct, quite a chunky white sole so feels very supportive.

Buttercup2021 · 11/01/2021 18:16

I have Asics and love them. I recommend a gait analysis at a specialist running store if ever lockdown ends.

I wear Geox to work - they look like shoes but have soles like trainers. I love them but think the ageing style police over on the Style section will condemn them as nanna trainers.

[quote Gliblet]I buy army surplus trainers from Becketts. Not particularly stylish but good quality and only £15 odd.

Are these unisex? Or is there no difference between men and womens shoe sizes

Gliblet · 11/01/2021 18:40

@Theunamedcat they come up true to size for both DH and I - admittedly I have fairly wide feet but Becketts could probably advise on fit for other customers.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 11/01/2021 18:45

I e got Achilles tendinitis and osteoarthritis of the ankle and I've just ordered myself some vionic trainers in the sale, they come with a 30 day return policy if they don't suit. I am really hoping they are good as I want to increase my dog walking pace and distance!

You can do gait analysis at home if needed. Even just a look at the bottom of some existing boots will tell you where your heel strikes etc. Agree it is quite important to determine if you need a more structured shoe. I have some Merrell walking shoes off Ebay, far less comfy than my trusty Adidas!

BessboroughBaby · 11/01/2021 20:22

Skechers now do Arch Fit shoes. They have in built arch support.

mrschocolatte · 11/01/2021 20:30

I had terrible problems with my foot last year and it was all down to poor support for my arches. After a lot of research I ended up buying the Nike Air Zoom Structure 23 trainer and I have walked for miles in these and they are so comfortable and supportive, They were pricey but well worth the money.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 11/01/2021 20:50

I’m not a fan of sketchers generally but their Uno Street trainers are great. They have the bubble thing in the sole like Nike Air. They were the only shoe I could walk in fairly pain free during a bad bout of sciatica

The outer edges always wear first so I think that means I’m an underpronater?

I think the ASICS are possibly top of the list at present. Bloody lockdown though, I’ll just have to bung a few pairs on the credit card and see what fits the best,

Thanks for all of the input.

The new Skechers arch fit are fab. They have a really supportive insole and help with my plantir fasciitis. They have some nice styles too.

ineedanotherholiday · 11/01/2021 21:16

I really like my Adidas ultra boost, very comfy I find

littlematchstickgirl · 11/01/2021 21:22

I got trainers for running from Decathlon. I don't run any more but they are very comfortable for walking.

Hopeforhappiertimesahead · 12/01/2021 08:17

For those who like geox, tkmaxx have a few reduced, and if your a size 3 you can get ones currently in the sale for £70 for £10

LadyEloise · 15/01/2021 09:27

Brooks are supposed to be great.

squareofthehypotepotenuse · 18/01/2021 17:22

I have very “difficult” feet and am hyper mobile....Nike Internationalist are about the only normal type trainers I can wear for long walks without special insoles or pain.

I’ve not tried Vionic trainers, but swear by their flip flops!

Pleasethinkbeforebuying · 18/01/2021 18:14

Asics Goretex trail trainers - look good, comfortable, lightweight, rugged, breathable and waterproof. I use mine walking the dog most days, mud, puddles, fallen trees, rocks etc not a problem - approx £85 - will outlast most other trainers
