I have the ice fear again - please help me find trainers/boots

My beloved Dr Martens have finally given up and I can't find another pair I like this year (I like their pull on biker style like Kristy, Tana or Elate). I loved the Dr Marten's sole as I didn't find myself slipping on ice as much.

I need to get my fitness in check so I'm trying to get out for a walk every day after gaining 3 stone during lockdown but it's been very icy and snowy the last week so I've been stuck indoors. I hate walking on ice.

Can anyone recommend either stylish winter boots or trainers/walking shoes with good traction on ice?

If it's winter boots I'd prefer plain black leather.

For trainers/walking shoes they can be black/dark grey with a coloured accent.

Nothing too over the top like snow boots, something I can wear whether it's icy or not but will help me stop sliding about like Bambi.

Thanks!

I forgot - if it's boots I'll spend up to £150 but for trainers/walking shoes £100 or less.

Get some YakTrax for the bottoms of your current boots/shoes. Gamechanger!

HuckfromScandal · 09/01/2021 11:17

Yaktrax without a doubt, totally worth the money

WyrdSisterWeatherwax · 09/01/2021 13:34

Thanks. I'd tried them before but didn't like them.

I have tried everything, including yak tracks. Nothing is better than DMs in ice and snow.

ShoesJerry · 09/01/2021 14:28

I always wear my Celtic & Co sheepskin boots in ice and snow. They are compatible with Yak Trax, but I usually just wear them without. Best grip soles I've found, and snuggly warm feet!

SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 09/01/2021 14:33

I find my Merrill walking trainer fine on ice and have the benefit of being wearable all year round. I keep horses so am out first and last thing all year round and wear them unless actually going into a mud bath of a field when I wear wellies.

WyrdSisterWeatherwax · 09/01/2021 16:31

I'm still on the hunt for new Docs but don't like Chelsea boots or the classic lace ups @HermioneWeasley got a bid in on a pair of older style ones on eBay.

Thanks @ShoesJerry and @SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs, I'll have a look at them. Had seen some Merrill ones that looked nice so good to hear they work in ice. Never hear of Celtic and Co so I'll look them up 😊

I have these Columbia trainers that are very good in ice snow, plus have waterproof barrier so your feet do not get wet.

What are youse on about, DMs in snow and ice. They are surely famously rubbish on ice? I have a pair (bought about six years ago) and nearly killed myself that winter when I tried wearing them. And discussing this with friends who were gothy in the 90s when we were young they all said they are shite on ice. Granted, I’m in Sweden, but surely ice is ice? I am mystified.

Anyway, I’ve heard great things about Icebugs. Getting a pair is on my list but I can’t commit to any of the models.

raffegiraffe · 09/01/2021 17:46

Definitely get some ice grippers. I bought not expecting much and they are fab. Now all my boots are good for the ice

BikeRunSki · 09/01/2021 17:54

I’ve stopped wearing my DMs this week because they are so slippy on snow and ice!!
I vote for Yak Trax though.

Craftycorvid · 09/01/2021 18:10

Blundstones are the grippiest thing ever on ice plus they are waterproof and look good. An old trick if it’s super icy: wear a pair of old socks over the top of your boots. Yes, it does look odd but you won’t slip.

ChristingleAlltheWay · 09/01/2021 18:15

I'm awful on ice. Tried everything - snowboots, YakTrax, to no avail. Last week had to drop something to a neighbour so slipped my cheapo welly-shoes (slip on mules, not boots) on, and had no trouble whatsoever. So I reckon wellies are the way to go.

WyrdSisterWeatherwax · 09/01/2021 18:40

@banivani I've always found mine great on ice but maybe it varies by type? I don't wear the classic lace up style, tried one pair like that but found them very inflexible. I've been wearing docs for 20 years but it's the pull-on biker style I go for. My last pair even made the awful trek to work during the beast from the east bearable.

@craftycorvid blundstones came up during my Google hunt yesterday, are they worth the money?

Timberland? I got some nice grey ones, they've been brilliant in the snow and so warm.

I have these in brown. Super comfy, warm and waterproof. Goretex. Decent sole.

OublietteBravo · 09/01/2021 18:45

Have a look at the Ecco sale. They have a good selection of both boots and trainers.

Sexnotgender · 09/01/2021 18:46

Last link I messed up.

MrsDThomas · 09/01/2021 19:24

Yep to yaktraks! Ideal!

Sickoffamilydrama · 09/01/2021 19:39

I see @OublietteBravo has beaten me to it Ecco are good for grip I've got these coming soon.

Splodgetastic · 09/01/2021 19:41

I have something similar to Yaktrax and if you have small feet Bally have some lovely and expensive snow / ice spikes which I expect are amazing as they are a Swiss make.

SoapAndFury · 09/01/2021 19:48

I'm finding these really comfy and non slip!
