It's for my step daughter's wedding which will be in the autumn. (Next year, so I really am thinking ahead 😂)

Dress is 100% wool, by Hobbs and a bargain atm on eBay 😅. I like things which are quite classical and the mother of the bride type stuff I've looked at online so far is over the top. I'm hoping that being wool, it should be warm enough to get away with only a coat to get to the venue, then no little jacket or cardi required for the rest of the reception.

Is it too boring for a wedding? The wedding is posh country house type venue. I would dress it up with some lovely shoes and a classy bag? I may just buy it anyway and wear it out to dinner when we can eventually nice things like that again!

I'm mid fifties, 5'7" and a size 10. Thank you 😊

It's a nice dress but for the office in a corporate environment imo. I do not thi bk it is suitable for a wedding & even less so for one where you are a family member.
Sorry OP. If it's a bargain buy it & wear it to dinner as you said

MyNameForToday1980 · 09/01/2021 10:53

I like the dress...it might be too casual depending on the wedding (as it looks more knitted/ felted and less structured/tailored).

But as I say, that depends on the formality of the wedding.

Sometimes you can smarten up non tailored wear with a jacket and/or accessories, but a relaxed felted shape can clash with a structured tailored fabric.

If it's a bargain, and you like it, I'm sure you'd get some wear out if it either way.

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 09/01/2021 10:54

I think it's lovely and very chic, and could be dressed up easily. I can't stand the typical mother of the bride stuff either.

HerMammy · 09/01/2021 10:55

A wedding is a chance to look fabulous, this is something I’d wear to a meeting, very plain.

ParisJeTAime · 09/01/2021 10:57

I like it! But I'm like you and prefer classic clothes. I don't think weddings are a chance to be fabulous, unless you're the bride or you really want to dress that way. I tend to tone it down for weddings and that is a very nice dress.

pictish · 09/01/2021 10:58

Lovely dress, great tailoring...but too plain for a wedding I’d say. If it were me. Of course some people prefer to be understated which is absolutely fine too.

Nomoresleeps · 09/01/2021 10:58

I think it’s too plain, especially if you don’t want to wear a jacket or coat with it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 09/01/2021 10:58

Lovely dress, I love the neckline, very Madmen!

I feel it's more of a day dress though than Mother of the bride. I would still buy it though if it's a bargain and use it for something else!

I think with your figure and height you'll definitely be able to find something more occasional.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/01/2021 10:59

Buy it anyway but the fabric rules it out as wedding attire. I love the cut and the neckline though.

I agree a lot of the motb stuff is awful.

pictish · 09/01/2021 10:59

Yes, typical MOTB garb is pretty ghastly. You don’t have to resort to that either.

GlitterBiscuits · 09/01/2021 11:00

It's a great dress, buy it!
But then but something else for the wedding!

AnyFucker · 09/01/2021 11:01

Work dress, sorry

catwithflowers · 09/01/2021 11:02

Wow, thanks for all the quick replies! I thought you might (mostly!) say it was too casual 😊. I might bid on it anyway and just wear it to celebrate the opening of restaurants and eventual back to normality!

I'm sure I'll be back nearer the time asking for more suitable suggestions 😘

caperplips · 09/01/2021 11:02

I agree with pp that MOTB generic stuff is awful & I wouldn't wear it in a million years.
If minimal sharp tailoring is your thing I think you can achieve that a lot better than this dress.

MrsR87 · 09/01/2021 11:02

I like the dress but not for a wedding.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 09/01/2021 11:03

It’s really nice and very smart, you don’t want to wear those ghastly ted baker etc dresses that folk buy for weddings
Mn can be very staid in its advice, you don’t need a frock or something weddingy

Pancakeorcrepe · 09/01/2021 11:06

It is a lovely dress, buy it, but perhaps not for the wedding of your daughter.
I like classic stuff too and loathe normal MOTB dresses but I think you are going too far the other way 😂 get a stunning but plain dress for her wedding, maybe in a more “occasion” fabric, or some sort of detailing or really good cut that makes you feel fabulous. You sound like you have a great figure anyway.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 09/01/2021 11:06

I think at you'd look great in that. I can't stand the typical 'mother of the bride' outfits, they're awful!
My mil wore something very similar to our wedding, no silly hat, just teamed it with a really nice bag and shoes, she looked gorgeous.

BarbRoyle · 09/01/2021 11:06

I actually think this would look great at the wedding accessorised with bright red or hot pink - so much nicer than the 'shiny dress and coat' type mother of the bride type outfits

thecognoscenti · 09/01/2021 11:08

Love it. It looks so classy and can easily be dressed up if you want. I can't bear the shiny pastels most MOTBs seem to favour.

UnrulyJulie · 09/01/2021 11:10

I think it’s fine and can be jazzed up with accessories.

Will the actual mother of the bride be there? If so let her wear the MOB outfitWink.

Cooltalkin · 09/01/2021 11:22

It’s a bit plain I think
There are nicer dresses for motb without buying a typical motb outfit .
A nicer fabric in the same cut would be lovely , classic but a bit more glamorous for a special occasion

steppemum · 09/01/2021 11:26

I think it is really hard to say.

If I wore it, it would look plain and dull.

If Kate wore it, it would look elgant and sophisticated and everyone would go wow.

So much depends on how you carry it off. Could be incredible - understated but classy, or just plain.

Cheesypea · 09/01/2021 11:28

It's a nice dress but if you dont want to wear a cardi/Jacket I'd go for long sleeves in autumn.

pictish · 09/01/2021 11:40

Oh just realised it’s your step daughter’s do. Obviously you won’t be going for the full MOTB ensemble complete with silly hat.

I’d wear the dress you linked to for any number of occasions...dining out, drinks with friends, brunch. Buy it anyway.
