Thoughts on a coat

I often read on here posts to help the Op decide on a purchase and thought I would give it a try.

These are the two coats I am looking at. I have kind of decided on the lighter one from Gant. It has a little more arrival about it than the Hobbs one. I also like the thought of being cocooned in a coat that is the colour of shortbread. Is a darker coat better though?

I would be cold in both.
A light coloured coat wouldn't be practical for me, but maybe you have more money for dry cleaning.

MaelyssQ · 07/01/2021 16:19

I would buy the lighter one, and wear it with really bright gloves, scarf and hat.

CushionsandCandles · 07/01/2021 16:20

It depends what you are asking.
The Jaeger coat is 100% wool, the Gant one 49%.
In my opinion a better fabric always makes a coat warmer, classier and better lasting.

larrythelizard · 07/01/2021 16:20

I think it might also depend on your shape. I'm quite busty so I suspect the second would be better for me the first.

I'm no S&B aficionado though and being cocooned in shortbread is more up my street...

SoupnSalads · 07/01/2021 16:24

Do you mean cold physically? I'm not too sure, winters have been milder, plus there is layers.

Here is another more comparable pic. The Gant one would go with more warmer colours to lift it. It's a good point about dry cleaning. I'd be happy to do an annual dry clean after winter but anything more than that...the thought of spilling something on it does already make me feel stressed.

If you want warm, more on trend, wool and shortbread I'd go for some thing like this for about the same price point.
They also do a similar one in alpaca.

Mmm currently on the bustier side. Chunky layers too. Good spot on the composition, I just assumed that one of that price would be wool! I'm now leaning more toward Jaegar, their tailoring is really good. Do you think it would go with navy, rich reds? I like to ever so slightly bigger collar on the Jaegar one as I am broad of shoulder.

i always think that the belted ones look like dressing gowns

sofiaaaaaa · 07/01/2021 16:41

I would be cold in both.

How do you know whether OP feels the cold as hard as you do? How do you know that she doesn’t have other warm coats to choose from in her wardrobe, and specifically wants to buy something with this silhouette? This is a dressier coat after all, padded duvet coats do not suit every occasion.

OP I would buy the lighter shade, not necessarily that specific coat (I’m sure there’s lots on the market in the same colour). The darker colour looks a bit dull/boring and isn’t as classic long-term. I doubt you’ll want to wear it year after year.

GuineaWig · 07/01/2021 16:49

I would go for the lighter one - more stylish

SoupnSalads · 07/01/2021 17:39

Thanks for all the comments . Will have a think. This one is gorgeous (one to save up for) but its so utterly impractical for commuting I couldn't wear it. I'm trying to invest in pieces I will keep. I might look at houndstooth which could have cream in the base.

That's beautiful but not in many people's budgets.

RunnerDown · 07/01/2021 19:19

I bought a cream max Mara coat in the Harvey Nichols sale years ago - veery like the one you have posted. I only wear it going out but it is absolutely beautiful. I always feel good in it and get lots of compliments. ( And I’m very ordinary looking)
Its much nicer than any coat I’ve had from Hobbs or Jigsaw . But I wouldn’t say it was an every day coat

Ponks · 07/01/2021 21:00

I have the Jigsaw city coat (though in black) and it is fantastic quality.

Ellapaella · 07/01/2021 21:31

I love the &other stories one that somebody posted. That would be my first choice, after that the Max Mara one.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/01/2021 10:23

That Max Mara one is to die for - if it was me I would buy that one. Of the first two you showed, I would buy the single breasted one - double breasted coats are generally not so flattering IMO

Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2021 15:06

"I would be cold in both.

She probably doesn't, but it's January and everyone feels the cold to some extent. Otherwise, why bother with a winter coat at all?

How do you know that she doesn’t have other warm coats to choose from in her wardrobe, and specifically wants to buy something with this silhouette? "

Yes, I keep forgetting how rich MNers are and I also just think it makes sense to get a coat that you can wear regularly.

"This is a dressier coat after all, padded duvet coats do not suit every occasion."

If it's cold I'll wear a padded coat and won't care who thinks it doesn't suit every occasion. Quite a waste to buy a coat that's not warm imo.

I suppose I was being too practical for S&B.

AcornAutumn · 08/01/2021 15:10

OP your title sounds like a poem by the Romantics.😁

I think I might do an ode to coats (and scarves, which I'm obsessed with at the mo).

I actually prefer the darker one, as well as it being more practical.

iguanadonna · 08/01/2021 15:13

The Gant one would show the dirt like anything. No good if sitting on grubby trainseats.

Lily193 · 08/01/2021 15:26

MaxMara without a doubt. I have a similar MaxMara style and wear it as an everyday coat. I think the quality of & other stories is awful so I would avoid that one at all costs - a high percentage of polyamide like that coat has will lead to a cheap look and feel.

LunaBiscuit · 08/01/2021 15:39

I really like the first one, the cream one with the pocket details.

BinkyBoinky · 08/01/2021 17:44

Give her a break, OP asked for "thoughts". PP wasn't telling her what to do or don't. My first thought was exactly the same.
BlueSussex · 08/01/2021 18:55

I love the Max Mara and the Stories coats.

I am busty and would never choose a double breasted coat like the Gant one, it would make me look really matronly.

PresentingPercy · 08/01/2021 19:16

I have numerous Jaeger coats and they are well made from excellent fabrics. Personally I prefer knee length coats or longer as the elevate your height and minimise your bust. Of these I like the Gant one but actually have an older version of the Jaeger one but mine is longer.

I have a camel Max Mara Classic wrap coat and it’s midi length. Neither that or the Jaeger coats are particularly warm. But they are beautiful. You could try Cos and Arket. Gerard Darel do great coats and I love Toast coats too. I have a couple of their modern tweed ones.

For really cold days get a full length puffa!
