Can I wear a man's jumper?

I'm a size 14 and want a chunky warm jumper Cnut struggling. Found this nice fat face one but not keen on the pink and blue not in my size.
Found an m and s one but I know I won't look cute in man's jumper but maybe a bit odd....I think the funnel will suit me better than a round neck but I now want this one I can't have. I'm cold WFH but hate wearing just hoodies.

Can I wear a man's jumper?

Mostly wear old men's lambswool cardigans and jumpers from M&S. Done so since it was fashionable when I was a teenager. Floral dress, DM boots, slouchy lambswool cardigan.......can you guess how old I am Grin. Who cares, I've bought from the kids section too, including boys clothing. I prefer the colours usually.

bluetongue · 07/01/2021 09:55

They’d look ridiculous on me (5 foot nothing) but why not.

Hey, I wear kids shoes because sometimes women’s shoes aren’t small enough Grin

polkadotpjs · 07/01/2021 11:25

I repeat I don't seek permission, more the helpful guidance some have given on brands and sizing to go for. I'll wear what I like but can't afford to order loads in ten different sizes so there's some good tips here.

Don't worry op, it's obvious what you mean. I love a men's jumper and also men's V-neck cardigans. I like the slouchy fit plus, as other posters have said, they're often better quality for the price and less prone to those annoying fashiony touches which can date women's knitwear so quickly.

I'm quite fussy about the fit though and I don't always find it easy to get it right. For example, I have a men's lambswool cardigan from Uniqlo and, as I'm typically size 10 or 8, I originally ordered it in Small but it wasn't right at all - it just looked badly fitting instead of relaxed and oversized. The Medium though is spot on - yes the sleeves are long but that's part of the look and I just roll them up.

So my main advice - and sorry cos you've said you're trying to avoid this - would be to try at least a couple of sizes, including a size bigger than you think you need, although it does depend on what kind of fit you're after.

Milkshake7489 · 07/01/2021 11:57

I love men's jumpers but it does work best if you go for a slouchy oversized look!

Occasionally I buy my own but my favourites are all technically DH's Wink

When I’m at home I pretty much live in a medium sized Tesco men’s lambs wool jumper. It was a bargain and so comfy, and I just wash it in the machine and it’s been fine. I’m women’s size S or XS on top but like the oversized fit. Sleeves are a bit long I guess but not enough to get in the way

polkadotpjs · 07/01/2021 13:03

Ive ordered a few sale bargains
Let's see what they're like
I'm not so keen on the m and s one. The shape yes but would like a bit longer but thank you. I appreciate it

I wish I could wear a man's jumper I have big boobs and hips so whenever I wear my husbands it's massive round the waist and arms and too tight every where else. My sil has a very athletic shape and small boobs and always wears mens clothes, I'm jelous!

lazylinguist · 08/01/2021 09:51

I have big boobs and I buy men's jumpers - depends on the fit of the particular jumper, but most fit me.

Then buy one that fits, they’re meant to look baggy, that’s the entire point.
Floisme · 08/01/2021 12:42

Yeah I think finding the fit is the thing. A random men's jumper is no more likely to look right on me than a random women's jumper, and finding the right fit can be just as big a pain in the arse.

Janegrey333 · 08/01/2021 12:49

A man’s jumper is meant to look cosy and studenty on women. Agonising about the “fit” is pointless given it wasn’t created with women in mind.

Floisme · 08/01/2021 12:59

How it fits is the whole point.

Floisme · 08/01/2021 13:00

And by 'fit' I don't mean whether the sleeves are the right length or the shoulders are in the right place. I mean the overall look.

Spudina · 08/01/2021 13:11

I’ve “borrowed” two of my DHs jumpers. They look better on me!

GRAK · 08/01/2021 13:14

Go for it! If you like it, it doesn't matter what someone else has gendered that jumper with. Enjoy your new cosy jumper!

Why is that a problem? They are designed to be baggy.
Lovemusic33 · 08/01/2021 15:28

It’s not a mans jumper unless a man is wearing it? Clothes do not have a gender 😉

Okaaay.

Well said
Scarby9 · 08/01/2021 15:42

My men's jumpers are quite snug round the hips but otherwise great ( and I prefer snug to flapping). I oftem much prefer the patterns and the fit.

polkadotpjs · 08/01/2021 15:52

Not to self to word post differently next time
I can and will wear what I want but was musing if there may be what I want in the men's range as they seem to have cosier, nicer knitwear on offer at present.

I acquired an M&S polo neck that was a present for DH. Smoke "damaged" stock from a fire at our local store. Cashmere mix I think but gets machine washed with everything else...

I love it. The neck hole is a more comfortable size, it drapes nicely and is actually long enough to not let draughts in to my midriff. Much better than the female equivalent. I'm a busty 12/14 and it's a medium.

Floisme · 08/01/2021 16:09

One thing about men's V-neck jumpers that doesn't work so well for me is that they tend to have a higher neckline - it's partly why I prefer a v-neck cardigan, especially if it has a 1960s knitting pattern feel to it.

That's why I like them. They do work for me. I dislike low V necks (not having any boobs to speak of)
