Anyone using this?

Am going to try 30 days and see how I get on. I'm always battling my thinning locks!

There was a thread the other day and a few of the posters said it was very good and worth a try. Something like over 50’s only need respond was the title.

Mrstwiddle · 06/01/2021 14:11

I want to try this too, pls update, it sounds v promising.

dameofdilemma · 06/01/2021 14:55

I've been using this for around 5 years, since my hairdresser recommended it.

Pros:

  • Other shampoos designed for thin hair tended to either aggravate eczema in my scalp or cause a lot of scalp build up after a few weeks (or both). I don't have this issue with Nioxin.
  • Its encouraged regrowth in areas that were thinning.
  • I have less hair coming out when I wash it (so guess hair is stronger).

Cons:

  • Its a more expensive option than some shampoos.
  • It can dry out your hair so if you tend to have dry hair/split ends, use the conditioner
  • its designed to be used with the scalp treatment (I can't use this as have a sensitive scalp but use it if you can)
  • Its a long term option - it took months for me to see improvement and I still have thin hair (but it isn't as bad as it was before). Be realistic, its unlikely to give you thick hair if you didn't have that before.
Rainydays200 · 06/01/2021 17:24

The scalp treatment really irritated my (very sensitive) scalp unfortunately

princessTiasmum · 06/01/2021 17:58

I have tried it, and sorry to say it did nothing for me but make it very dry
I have tried everything under the sun, tablets, sprays vitamins etc
I find Biotin very good for growth in general but not new growth
There are a few threads on thinning hair and hair loss on here, very up to date ones, you might get some tips looking through those

Rainydays200 · 06/01/2021 19:14

I follow Emma Guns on Instagram. She used Nioxin for a few years but has since had an assessment with Philip Kingsley and is getting great results from whatever they have recommended to her. Might be worth checking it out?

laughoutquiet · 06/01/2021 20:50

Thanks all.

My hair has never been thick but it really started thinning after l had a B12 problem. Am now dosed up on this (and a host of other hair helping vits!) but it's still not brilliant so thought I would try an extra something that was more topical.

I used in twice over 4 days so far. My scalp feels like it has an ice cap on in parts?! I'm hoping this means it's doing something Smile

@Mrstwiddle I'll do a weekly update on this thread

If the Nioxin doesn't work or you find it too expensive, try using the dandruff shampoo Nizoral once or twice a week. The active ingredient in it helps inhibit DHT (the hormone that contributes to hair loss), mostly the same as Nioxin does but at a much cheaper price point.

laughoutquiet · 06/01/2021 21:45

Thank you @tobda76 I'll keep that in mind at the end of my experiment Smile

A hairdresser once told me peppermint oil is the only active in nioxin - so I add it to my own shampoo or massage it into my scalp mixed with a carrier oil as it’s very strong. Even diluting with water and massaging that in works. Micro rolling with it is also a thing if you google it

MolotovMocktail · 07/01/2021 12:24

Thanks OP, will be looking out for your updates!

Mrstwiddle · 08/01/2021 02:06

Thank you Op, updates would be great :)

Norfolkwelder · 08/01/2021 06:20

I've had great results with Coconut oil leave on for 15 mins and then wash my hair. I do this a couple of times a week and it's really helped.

laughoutquiet · 11/01/2021 21:18

@Mrstwiddle @MolotovMocktail
First update as promised!

So I've used it for a week so far, which was four separate hair washes/treatments. For reference, I am only using Nioxin. No other shampoo, conditioners or styling products. I am also only using the cooler setting on my hairdryer and no other heat styling. I thought this may give my hair the best chance!

Both the shampoo and the conditioner both smell really mentholated. I didn't need much product so think the bottles I have will last me over a month. The scalp spray is a lot harder/ more direct than I was expecting! So I've been kind of rubbing it in.

For the first few days my scalp was reacting to the Nioxin. It felt like my head was cold or something was slightly pulling my hair. A strange sensation but not painful at all.

I haven't noticed any change so far but wasn't expecting anything yet. My hair is a lot greasier, I would normally go 4 days between washes but at the moment I am doing it every other day. Of course, this may be due to me not using any other products.

I've attached pics Confused of my hair currently - tip view of parting and sides pulled gently back. When tied back my ponytail is the size of a 5p piece!

See you next Monday Smile

Ooh, your hair is not too dissimilar to mine, so I have my fingers crossed it works. I was also looking at their Diaboost spray as possibly an alternative to the shampoo/conditioner set, it gets good reviews.

laughoutquiet · 18/01/2021 14:37

@MolotovMocktail @Mrstwiddle

Week two done and dusted with some hair highs and lows.

During the first part of the week a fair bit of my hair fell out Confusedwhich was a little upsetting but I was expecting it from my research! It also feels very dry when I'm shampooing it but it's very silky once conditioned and dry. It is getting really greasy though after just one day but as I said previously, that may be because I'm not using any extra products.

Dare I say it (?) but I think it looks a little thicker. I'll do some more pictures in a couple of weeks to compare properly.

Wish me luck!

I'm using it too, OP. It gives you a funny tingling on your scalp, and I have to use the conditioner which I wouldn't normally use as it leaves your hair a bit matted. But I've noticed a difference and a lot less is falling out now when washing. I have to use every other day too.

Darklingthrush · 18/01/2021 14:44

Which number Nioxin are you using OP?

How long have you been using it for?

I'm not really sure if there's a big difference in them tbh. I think I should get no2 but it's not on special offer whereas no1 is! Any idea of whether there is a difference?

laughoutquiet · 18/01/2021 15:25

@Darklingthrush sorry I'm not that much of an expert yet! But I imagine they all contain the same active ingredients?
