Women under 50 need not respond

AnotheChinHair · 02/01/2021 10:28

Sorry for such an ageist subject title, but I am often drawn to threads that ask for foundation, shampoo, etc. recommendations and then realise that the OP and respondents are in their 30s and feel like I need some discussion with women my age.

My hair has changed, my skin looks different, my body aches, my eyebrows are faint and full of greys... I was wondering if you're 50 or over, could you share your wisdom on how you've adapted your grooming?

I'd be particularly interested in hair products (my hair is fine, prone to frizz and def. thinning and receding), my skin is still combination I think, and I would like to find a long lasting oil free full/medium coverage foundation that doesn't look dry around my eyes (currently using ELDW), and also supplements that make you feel and look better.

I have a horrible carb face after the sugar excesses of Christmas, and I have stopped drinking alcohol as I clearly don't tolerate it anymore.

I should exercise more but my knee hurts.
Recently started hrt patches and that has helped with night sweats.

Hope others can share what's been helpful.

I echo that it's important to look after your feet. I'm lazy, so happily pay for a professional pedicure once a month. My feet are always soft and sandal ready.

My MIL seems to have forgotten she has feet and they are terrible to behold [shudders]

goose1964 · 02/01/2021 18:35

I don't know if I should be here, I'm 57 and the only problem I've had is dry skin, so I've gone from as hoc moisturising to daily moisturising.

Destinysdaughter · 02/01/2021 18:47

Apparently taking turmeric is good for aches and pains, you can buy it in tablet form. I haven't tried it myself but someone recommended it on another forum and the Amazon reviews were good. Every little helps!

JMAngel1 · 02/01/2021 18:52

@Tillytess

How does A313 compare to Dermatica. I use A313 every other night and was thinking of switching to Dermatica. Which would you say is best?

Melange99 · 02/01/2021 19:05

I use turmeric for aches and pains. It works.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 02/01/2021 19:12

The only thing that helps my suddenly frizzy hair (never was before) is conditioner and hair straightners.
They make my hair nice and shiny and unfrizzy. I don't use them everyday but if you get it trimmed regularly it should be ok.
Face cream definitely needs changing over 50, I've tried them all including very expensive ones and the best so far is nivea soft, it really sinks in and is not too greasy.
I only ever use touche eclat foundation, it is worth every single penny, with a light dusting of powder applied with a brush so it doesn't dry the skin out.
HRT is a must, my skin has really improved on it.
To really liven up your skin try a 10 day fast. I use slimfast shakes 600 calories a day for 10 days and loads of water and you will look fantastic and lose half a stone straight off.

Tillytess · 02/01/2021 19:23

@JMAngel1 I think A313 gives more dramatic results. I also use it every other night. When I first tried it I found it awful, made my skin really itchy and uncomfortable so subscribed to Dermatica for a few months instead. Didn't see much improvement (maybe didn't give it long enough?) so cancelled my subscription.
Found the tube of A313 in bathroom cabinet and thought id give it another try. No adverse reaction this time, skin feels smoother and firmer.

EternalOptimist7 · 02/01/2021 19:28

My hair has always been fine but menopause has taken it to a whole new level! For volume, I haven’t been able to beat “ Got2Be” mousse. Brilliant! I’m on HRT patches which have completely eliminated hot flushes.

XingMing · 02/01/2021 19:51

Turmeric seems to be a good alternative to NSAI drugs. Not based on personal experience but XingDog had congenital shoulder problems. She had corrective surgery very young and was okay for several years afterwards but we noticed in September that she wasn't comfortable after exercise, and she's very energetic. So she has a glucosamine supplement, bolstered with turmeric, and a specialist food, and her joints don't seem to trouble her as they did a few months ago. Turmeric is much used in Ayurvedic (spelling?) medicine for pain relief; there's complicated pharmacoepic explanation on the internet if you want to explore further. It has definitely helped the dog.

XingMing · 02/01/2021 19:54

My top hair products are an oil serum, and the Kerastase elixir is just about worth the price. Or, much cheaper, is Almost Everything from Hershesons. I daren't even look at what's in it, but it calms my curly frizzing grey crop into quite decent curls.

Ironicpentameter · 02/01/2021 19:58

Ashwaganda
Vit D
Scalp massage
Hourglass powders
Urban Decay eyeshadow
Fresh air every day
Cut calories and ensure those you take are nutrient rich
Take time to your eyebrows - the more carefully, the better Smile

Ironicpentameter · 02/01/2021 19:59

@Melange99 - fresh turmeric in food, or pills? I need to try this!

Destinysdaughter · 02/01/2021 20:01

Another product I like that makes your skin v soft is black soap with argan oil. I bought some in Morocco but you can buy it in the UK too.
www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Soap-Argan-Oil-250/dp/B00B3V567M/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=black+soap+with+argan+oil&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1609617511&sr=8-5

JMAngel1 · 02/01/2021 20:27

Thanks @Tillytess
I'll stick with A313

LunaTheCat · 02/01/2021 20:42

Congratulations 52 today you look marvellous!

Moiraroseandthecrows321 · 02/01/2021 20:43

@JaneJeffer can I ask what CBD oil do you take and why do you take it? I’ve heard that it’s good for sleep which would be great for me.

MabelMoo23 · 02/01/2021 20:54

Am I allowed to comment as “only” 44?

However, I might only be 44 but I’m already on HRT for early menopause and can already identify with so much of this. My symptoms are so bad that I have to cut patches up to wear 1.5 patches each time and I’m about to start testosterone

My hair is so thin and I can clearly see my scalp, however, truthfully the best thing I’ve bought is a Dyson Airwrap. Not for the barrels, but for the hot brush styling and with Living Proof thickening mousse it has made a massive difference to my hair

I also have thinning brows and use Anastasia Beverley Hills dip brow pomade.

Make up wise I use Erborian CC creme or Giorgio Armani luminous silk foundation with Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched face cream as a primer underneath. Agree with the tubing mascara comment use Hourglass unlocked as along with my brows, my lashes are shit.

I feel like my face has just dropped though, I have really bad hooded eyes so eye make up is a nightmare but loving hourglass scattered light eyeshadow.

I also use Hourglass powders, and Victoria Beckham or Lisa Eldridge lipsticks - just so I feel a bit polished

Need other tips though as still feel like I’m a bit lost. And whilst I’m only 44, I’m also finding that tips for people in their 30’s don’t really seem to help. I have young children and am very very aware of how old I feel. Some of the Mum’s in my daughter’s reception class are barely 30 and I’m covered in HRT patches

I need to drink more water though, I have a terrible Diet Coke habit due to exhaustion and I need to walk more

Interested in other tips, especially re vitamins

Sorry for gatecrashing as I am under 50 but everything in this thread is resonating with me

@likeamillpond

Hi there...

my hair is very fine.. and wispy..

the weave is a row of teensy fine braids in the back of your head using your own hair.. then the long human hair extensions are sewn onto that teensy but super strong braid.. it looks incredible.. takes a good few hours and last for maybe 4 months. longer of you really look after it.. mines costs around £350..I do tend to take very good care of mines and have had 7 months out of one before...

This is my own hair before the weave and then then weave.. it's a 14 inch weave.. and your head does hurt for a while... but you it passes..

I find it better than clip ins.. cause I'm hellish lazy 😂

I meant to add... I've never had any damage to my own hair.. when its removed.. my own hair has been fine.. great infact.. but I'm not sure of other types of extensions.. I've only ever gone for weaves 💕

FelicityFeathers · 02/01/2021 21:21

I'm 49 and not in the menopause yet but I do the following to try and help!

I have Botox and fillers. Botox only in my forehead and only every 5 months. Fillers once a year - only a small amount. I know they're not for everyone

My hair is stupid and thin ish and instant do a thing with it. So I now have micro bond extensions. Not for length particularly but for volume and thickness. And they're invisible as my hairdresser cuts the bond in half before applying.. one packet gives me the thickness that I'd lost without the weight of traditional hair extensions

I take Lumity supplements along with vitamin D, C and K

And all manner of beauty products and skincare etc etc of course

Felicity how do you find the bonds.. I've been so tempted to try the, as the weave is.. as you say.. weighter .. I might try the bonds next time 🌺

Jennygentle · 02/01/2021 21:37

Thanks Spodge

FelicityFeathers · 02/01/2021 21:52

@BlueThistles excellent. Can't feel them at all weight wise and only know they're there if I feel for them. I was loathe to have extensions as I worry about stress alopecia and just making my hair thin even more but they're really very light. In each bond, there's only about 8 strands of hair and I had a pack of 25 ... split into half meaning I've got 50 mini bonds in. I could double that amount if I wanted to but this does what i wanted ... to lose the 'see through' frizzy strands. You wouldn't know I had them to look at me - my hair looks completely normal, just like the normal volume it used to have now

FelicityFeathers · 02/01/2021 21:53

@BlueThistles your weave looks fantastic but I suspect it might be too heavy for me

OneMoreForExtra · 02/01/2021 22:00

Great thread OP! I'm 52 - 53 on Weds - and loads of this is relevant.

My biggest issue is a massive case of the sags. My face looks like it's melting. So my biggest tip for those with sagging eyelids and hooded eyes is tightlining on the upper lid. (Just means using eyeliner on the waterline between your eyelashes and eyeball, not on the outside of the lashes). You need a waterproof pencil. It's an absolute game changer, and with just that and mascara on top lashes I feel kickass, rather than like a panto dame in eyeshadow.

Happy birthday @52today, you look much younger than me!
