Women under 50 need not respond

AnotheChinHair · 02/01/2021 10:28

Sorry for such an ageist subject title, but I am often drawn to threads that ask for foundation, shampoo, etc. recommendations and then realise that the OP and respondents are in their 30s and feel like I need some discussion with women my age.

My hair has changed, my skin looks different, my body aches, my eyebrows are faint and full of greys... I was wondering if you're 50 or over, could you share your wisdom on how you've adapted your grooming?

I'd be particularly interested in hair products (my hair is fine, prone to frizz and def. thinning and receding), my skin is still combination I think, and I would like to find a long lasting oil free full/medium coverage foundation that doesn't look dry around my eyes (currently using ELDW), and also supplements that make you feel and look better.

I have a horrible carb face after the sugar excesses of Christmas, and I have stopped drinking alcohol as I clearly don't tolerate it anymore.

I should exercise more but my knee hurts.
Recently started hrt patches and that has helped with night sweats.

Hope others can share what's been helpful.

@SuperSange I’ve been Using Sydney Cummings videos - you need a set of dumb bells but they are great no frills workouts that are quite challenging

likeamillpond · 02/01/2021 15:48

@BlueThistles

It's a 10 miracle leave in stuff ... makes my hair feel great... and Aveeno shampo & conditioner is just lovely..

I've had weaves .. they are life changing to your appearance.. but hurt like hell 😂 but lord do they look magnificent 💕

What's the difference between weaves and other hair extemsions?
Rina66 · 02/01/2021 15:49

55 here - was always 9 stone, now 11 - the knees are objecting to the extra load!

I still use Doublewear, I need foundation to even out and improve my skin tone, but I mix it with Trinny BFF or IT CC cream - so I still get the staying power but it’s less heavy. I find blusher/bronzer is also my friend, as is a vibrant lipstick if I’m going out. I’ve been quite impressed with the Trinny lip/cheek cream - makes you look put together with minimum effort.

I’m a fan of the tan luxe sleep oil - I look so much better when I’ve used that, it also makes my make up look better. I think the AHA’s in fake tan help my skin too. Daytime I use Elemis Marine Cream - was an Estée Lauder fan but find this so much better. Don’t sleep well anymore, so I am really interested in the cannabis vape @Yohoheaveho - think it could help with the menopausal anxiety too.

Hair is so much frizzier and drier. If I blow dry it properly and use the GHD split end cream, which smells divine, it’s so much better and that in turn makes me feel so much better. I also use Percy and Reed dry oil, helps immensely on days 2 and 3.

Again, I think eating well and regular exercise are key, I do not practise what I preach on this one but I am going to make a concerted effort this year for my knees 😂

Finally I try to dress well, sort of modern classics - coated jeans, skinny jeans with nice jumpers or shirts. Good double faced coats and longer jackets with a camisole underneath. Maxi pleated skirts with ankle boots and leather biker. Nice loungewear when I’m at home.

Finally, happy birthday @52today (I demand a recount, you look years younger) and @Separateatone.

Great thread OP! I recently dyed my eyebrows for the first time, and it’s made a subtle but worthwhile difference. I have mousy blonde brows with a few greys and it looks very natural. I used Schwarzkopf brow tint in dark blonde.

dementedma · 02/01/2021 15:51

56 here. HRT has been a bloody godsend. Still on it. Hair is thick and wiry but always has been, so have dyed it plum colour!
Take Vit B complex, Vit D and Magnesium.
Retinol ( and daily sunscreen) have improved face.
What I need to do is more exercise, drink more water, drink less alcohol.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/01/2021 15:57

I am 47 but menopausal and have the same issue with my skin. I have found that loading it with moisturiser overnight helps and I use No7 moisturising foundation with their primer underneath. The primer really does help prevent it sink into pores/wrinkles, which I have more of as I lost nearly 6 stone in the last 2 years and it really has aged my face.

I use brow powder rather than the mascara type stuff as it looks more natural and does still cover the greys, although my sister recommends getting them tinted when the grey is more than 50% (she is a spa manager and qualified therapist so I trust her!).

nonnygirl · 02/01/2021 15:58

@Spodge could you let me know which Liposomal Vitamin C you use - I've read that it’s really good for skin too

GGilbert · 02/01/2021 16:05

Low carb diets can cause thinning hair.

GGilbert · 02/01/2021 16:13

Top tips other than low carb doesnt suit everyone.
Primer under foundation
Defuzz if you have the peach fuzz this does make foundation look better
Bobbi Brown brick highlighter to give a glow
10000 steps minimum per day
2 litres water per day
HRT if you think you need it but not for every one.
Pay as much as you can for you dental work and hygiene
Intensive hair conditioner at least twice a week
Keep away from straighteners if you can flat hair is not youthful (well it is on the young but not on older faces!)
Good moisturiser on legs arms and chest
Oh and my pet hate take hard skin off your heels .

Spodge · 02/01/2021 16:21

@nonnygirl I use Altrient C from Abundance and Health. It's pricey but I think it's well worth the money. Pretty vile if you don't like drinking squidgy stuff, though.

Spodge · 02/01/2021 16:33

@Jennygentle - I got good results with UK Lash. It's not exactly cheap but it lasts for ages. You're supposed to chuck it after 6 months, I think, but I've used each tube for much longer with no ill effects. It made my lashes noticeably longer (but not thicker)

Destinysdaughter · 02/01/2021 16:49

This tinted moisturiser is a nice product, gives a good glow, with or without make up. ( check out the reviews). Is pricey tho!

seriousandloyal · 02/01/2021 16:51

So many excellent tips on this thread, thank you all for sharing.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 16:55

Now in mid fifties and have decided "fuck it, I'm going silver ". Can't wait to experiment with new colours- been a brunette all my life. Should've done it in lockdown. Gonna do it in lockdown lite.

Tillytess · 02/01/2021 17:05

Would love to re-appropriate the word 'crone' as a positive title for its original meaning of wisdom and strength, in honour of all women 50 plus.
In the meantime, I am 55 and do the following:

Do Jillian Michaels body revolution 3 days on, one day off etc. Take Glucosamine for aches and pains.
Face Yoga, 5 mins morning and (most) evenings.
Dont do stress.
Fairly relaxed about what I eat/drink, dont beat myself up about treating myself.
Was doing Dermatica, now use A313 at night. Daytime, Aldi moisturiser and that Maybelline Urban spa 50 foundation, not too heavy.
Brown rather that black eyeliner/mascara on top lashes only.
Lip balm rather than lipstick.
Try to drink 2 litres water a day.

Above all, relish your hard won power, strength and confidence, it shows in your face and body.

DameCelia · 02/01/2021 17:08

Just to echo PPs...... TEETH!!
If they're not straight Invisalign is the best investment you can make and YY to whitening them, Boots own brand whitening strips are better than the American stuff (imho) and stick to your teeth better.

LyndaSnellMBE · 02/01/2021 17:33

Great thread! Mid-fifties here, I’ve always had dry skin but have recently started adding a couple of drops of 100% Plant Derived Squalane Oil from The Ordinary (£5.50) to my moisturiser and night cream. It makes a big difference. I have my lashes and brows tinted every few weeks. No problems with my hair yet. I have been experimenting with different tinted moisturisers, bb creams and adding serum to foundation but not thrilled with any of them. Some great suggestions here that I will try. I do a Pilates reformer class four times a week which has really helped with toning and strength. I need to do more cardio though. I put on over a stone during lockdown and looked awful. I only had two outfits I could fit into. I lost all the weight by low-carbing and aim to lose more.

Imissmoominmama · 02/01/2021 17:45

I dye my lashes and brows- it gives some definition to my moonface. I’ve cut out alcohol and I look much better.

Supplements I take are: magnesium for muscles- they also keep me calm and help me sleep; sage for hot flushes- brilliant; maca root for my hormones (seems to help). If I’m having a very tired day, I forego the magnesium and take a Berocca.

I’m taking tips from you all though!

I’m 54.

XingMing · 02/01/2021 17:47

Good thread; thank you OP and PPS!

64 now, and my suggestions would be: Pilates, twice a week, plus dog walking five days. One of the Pilates routines I like has a 10-minute hand weight section, using 1k bells for 30 repetitions. I weigh more than I did at 25, but not very much more.

I get my eyebrows coloured and threaded every five to six weeks (because my eyesight is no longer up to the job). I take Vit D daily, and try to eat at least five portions of veg and fruit daily, but more is better. Lots of water and tea. I do drink alcohol, but am careful to choose lower strength, avoiding anything over 12.5%. It doesn't seem to affect my skin. I avoid sugar and processed food, except for a small amount of high % dark chocolate.

Skin care is morning face wash... Dermologica, which I've used for about 20 years. I buy a 500ml bottle every 9 months, and while it's expensive, I have thrown every alternative equivalent away. Then a hydrating lotion on damp skin, followed by a hyaluronic jelly, and a serum (usually something from Beauty Pie, but I switch around). Oil cleanse and flannel in the evening, followed by more serum and sometimes a face oil. There are several pots of moisturiser in the cupboard, but I don't often use any.

Make-up is rudimentary. I powder my nose with a MAC Skinfinish powder and do the rest of my face with One Powder Wonder (also Beauty Pie), comb brows with a spoolie, tubing mascara, and a pop of blusher. Finish with a Lip Sleeping Mask, which is the best lip conditioner I have found. For a more done look, I like Sensai's Glow over their primer, and some nude eye shadow, plus tightline above lashes (but not often, see failing eyesight above. It goes wrong more often than right). The Sensai is magic stuff, but not easy to buy. Harrods and some online companies are the only UK stockists. I love the right red or or orange lipstick, but not to be attempted under a mask!

crimsonlake · 02/01/2021 17:55

I will join you ladies, coming up to 60 years old and despite people telling me I look at least 10 years younger I can see formyself I am suddenly starting to age. I am assuming I am through the menopause as I had my last period at 57 years old.
My previously clear skin has really suffered from wearing a mask in work for 9 months. How can it be good for your skin, I despair.
I have always had fine hair, still terribly greasy yet I have always had very dry skin. Now I also have to deal with frizziness.
I generously have to slap on copious amounts of moisturiser throughout the day, mostly E45 or nivea as I need something really heavy. I have recently bought some nip fab brightening pads and cannot say I have noticed much benefit.
I was never blessed with long eyelashes and without a flick of mascara they are invisible. I have started to try and remember to fill in my eyebrows with a pencil and I find that does add a bit of depth to my face.
I have dark shadows under my eyes and have never found anything that really works.
I would be interested in over the counter tooth whitening strips that actually work as mine are certainly no longer white. I got the impression my NHS dentist thinks as it is part of the aging process of teeth that it should just be accepted.
I do want to keep fit as I get older and try to look my best, although in reality up to date I am very low maintenance.
My son bought me an exercise bike which initially I was working hard on, several weeks later I lost motivation.
The New Year sees me getting back on my bike, walking more, starting yoga and taking better care of myself.
Unfortunately despite all good intentions I have yet to do any of these things and I am vegetating and eating my way through leftover Christmas goodies.
I am going to start making a list of all products suggested on here and then go internet shopping.

Foundation no7 hydro luminous foundation , just the right amount of glow and coverage , this has been a rebuy for me

For brows - benefit brow

Mascara Clinique dramatically different waterproof , not thickening as such but seems to lengthen

Hair liz Earle shampoo and conditioner , gives some swish to my fine hair

Clinique gel moisturiser ( pink ) light but good

bringbacksideburns · 02/01/2021 18:00

HRT patches did not work at all for me. I think I'm hopefully over the worse now. I'm 52.

I have just ordered Boots No 7 Skin illuminator half price, and the L'Oreal Age Perfect Rehydrating Anti Aging Day cream and the Anti sagging night cream!
I need a decent moisturiser as my skin gets dry in places and flaky a little under foundation.

I really haven't worn make up much at all this year but I do like some of the Benefit products - their mascara and Bronzer are good. In the past I've liked No 7 Lift and luminate foundation and their BB Perfect Skin cream.

I'd love a go at magnetic eyelashes! Can any one recommend any? I also get sensitive eyes. Are they easy to apply and take off?

I have put on a couple of stone over menopause and for the first time ever I'm really conscious of it as I was slim all my life - it doesn't help that I have a frozen shoulder as I used to like doing Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube. Really worth following her if you haven't yet. I'm thinking the weight gain may also be similar to what happened to my mum at this age with her thyroid? I need to have it tested to make sure.

I try to take vitamin C and D daily but have started with cholesterol issues - has anyone started getting little faint yellow patches above the eye sockets?

Hair isn't too bad - I find the detangling conditioner spray from Aussie quite good. John Frieda products are also good for frizz.

Teeth wise I invested in an electric toothbrush and try to floss daily as your gums start to recede with age and my dentist advised it.

I noticed Debenhams had a good sale on beauty products recently- Elizabeth Arden and YSL. I was tempted to get a foundation powder.

Have no idea what to do to help with the growing aches and pains and weak knee but try to get out for a walk as much as possible.

Water is the best thing to drink but find this easier to do in the warmer months!

Cooltalkin · 02/01/2021 18:01

Also started a daily walking with dp
Currently wfh and sitting in arse all day

pinkhousesarebest · 02/01/2021 18:14

58, had a hysterectomy four years ago so assume am through menopause. No real symptoms. I piled on the weight after a horse riding accident and despite shredding/ running every day I couldn’t shift it. I then started Meet you at the Barre’s classes- complete revelation.
I love French pharmacie brands - have used Eucerin 5% Urea forever. I tried Retirides Retin A cream last year for sun spots but it did nothing for my skin. I love Weleda skin food at night. Use either Vitalumiere Acquaintance or à La Roche Posay cc cream but tbh have jettisoned make up s I wear a mask all day. Very
I am seriously intrigued by this collagen powder although I am slightly concerned by the mercury content in the fish one. My dm has dementia.
Love this thread!
