Women under 50 need not respond

AnotheChinHair · 02/01/2021 10:28

Sorry for such an ageist subject title, but I am often drawn to threads that ask for foundation, shampoo, etc. recommendations and then realise that the OP and respondents are in their 30s and feel like I need some discussion with women my age.

My hair has changed, my skin looks different, my body aches, my eyebrows are faint and full of greys... I was wondering if you're 50 or over, could you share your wisdom on how you've adapted your grooming?

I'd be particularly interested in hair products (my hair is fine, prone to frizz and def. thinning and receding), my skin is still combination I think, and I would like to find a long lasting oil free full/medium coverage foundation that doesn't look dry around my eyes (currently using ELDW), and also supplements that make you feel and look better.

I have a horrible carb face after the sugar excesses of Christmas, and I have stopped drinking alcohol as I clearly don't tolerate it anymore.

I should exercise more but my knee hurts.
Recently started hrt patches and that has helped with night sweats.

Hope others can share what's been helpful.

@sosotired1 I'm very interested in rebounding, especially as I'm shielding and generally immobile. How big is your child's mini trampoline? This could be a gamechanger as I couldn't justify the cost of a proper rebounder (until i know I'll use it). Tell me more!

Rosemary oil and biotin ? Will try. I am taking immedeen hair and nails, think it may have biotin in, will check, but anyway no change so far.

StillMedusa · 05/01/2021 01:11

53 here,..today!
HRT... sanity and body saver..I was turning into an itchy dry skinned potential murderer before I started!
Hair.. I stopped dying it, and have treated it with a bit more kindness, and while I have grey streaks they look like highlights and it has grown SO much during this lockdown year, it;s now thicker and healthier than ever..and half way down my back, which it has never been before. I think less is more.. dump the straighteners , minimse hairdrying and try to extend days between washes.. I'm down to three times a week and the GHD s are back in the cupboard.
I like Boots mascara (the gold one) as it just never smudges but have given up on other makeup.. foundation just settles in the creases in my face!

@Knittingnanny

I think it’s Estée Lauder double wear
Thank you @Knittingnanny.🙂

Since lockdown my hair has grown, which I like. It was a bob before. But it really has got thin in the last few years, mainly receding hairline, hidden with a fringe. Because I have been working from home I tie it up, scrape it back which I never did at the office. I think I am going to make a conscious effort not to tie it back all the time. The pulling at the sides cannot be helping the receding.

My collagen powder had arrived! It genuinely is completely tasteless in my morning coffee. Instructions just say to add one scoop to your drinks, but doesn't say how often? I'm thinking once a day? It was £20 for 40 doses, so not cheap!

chocolatespiders · 05/01/2021 08:54

Wow some great ideas. Which collagen powder do you recommend?

cathyandclare · 05/01/2021 09:47

Another one starting collagen today. Also surprised by lack of taste in coffee, expecting to look like Angelina Jolie by tea time Grin

I was recommended Wellguard Pure Collagen Hydrolysate powder by a PP on this thread, got it on Amazon

@SirVixofVixHall - I know there are doctors all over the world who treat the symptoms of thyroid problems, rather than the test results. What is your doctor like? Would they consider giving you a trial of a tiny bit more medicine?

If you haven't tried before, and presented it as a short term plan, they might be persuaded.

Everything you say implies that you might benefit from a slightly higher dose?

Labobo · 05/01/2021 10:21

I find L'Oreal Elvive Fibrology is the best hair thickener. I also notice that if I use Epsom salts in the bath and soak my hair too, it comes out looking thicker. If I then put conditioner on the tips of my hair, it doesn't look too dry.

For pale thinning brows, I brush on a matt brown shadow which is a softer look than brow mascara.

Best foundation I've found for pale dry skin, after years of looking and trying all price ranges, is Rimmel Lasting Finish which often gets compliments and looks very natural, almost like tinted moisturiser but with greater staying power.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/01/2021 10:29

Iborgia I have tried slightly upping my dose but then I feel a little bit hyper, but I have struggled with fatigue ever since my thyroid started struggling, a long time before I was actually diagnosed and medicated. I get palpitations when under or over, so I find it hard to tell sometimes which I am, especially as my sleep has gone awry since menopause.
My teenage dd has the same problem, and at the moment is veering between hyper and hypo. I feel despondent about ever feeling better and worry about her.
Losing weight and giving up sugary food seems to help slightly, but being greedy with a sweet tooth I find it hard to stick to, especially this year when I have been stressed and grieving.
When I up my dose I find it hard to tell if I am still tired because my sleep is disrupted on too much, or tired because I need more thyroxine. I do need bloods done but am avoiding it at the moment because I am worried about catching Covid.

Re collagen, someone upthread mentioned being worried about mercury in fish collagen, is this a concern ?

kingkuta · 05/01/2021 11:36

All the collagen I've used has been bovine collagen SirVixofVixHall. However the fish collagen is taken from the skin of the fish so doesn't contain any Mercury (this only cumulates in organs and fat)

woodhill · 05/01/2021 13:01

@Geordieoldgirl

I sympathize with the dodgy knees OP which I suffer from myself! Look on YouTube for Pahla B’s free ‘knee friendly’ excercise classes ( strength/cardio etc and different lengths of time). They are aimed at mature women, her slogan is ‘Make peace with your menopausal body’ and the movements are not hard.
Pahla B is excellent and I love her workouts
SirVixofVixHall · 05/01/2021 14:18

Thank you kingkuta I will order a fish one. I am mainly vegetarian, but I have thought for a while that maybe it doesn’t suit me for some reason. It has been over forty years though, so I am not going back to eating meat, but I can cope with fish extract as I very occasionally eat fish if run down.

JuliaCheeser · 05/01/2021 14:20

I've ordered the Wellgard collagen, delivery tomorrow. I've never tried anything like this before. Enjoying the different views and advice on this this.

JuliaCheeser · 05/01/2021 14:34

"this thread" not "this this." Clearly, from my rambling post. I need to be taking something. Grin

madmumofteens · 05/01/2021 16:22

Great thread OP but costing a fortune already ditching the ELDW and ordered the futuristic hydra and some more goodies Wink

Separateatone · 05/01/2021 17:29

I don’t understand how eating collagen can affect th skin. How does that work?

kingkuta · 05/01/2021 17:33

Because collagen is basically what makes your skin smooth and plump and as you get older you stop producing it, hence saggy skin. By eating the collagen peptides you're increasing your collagen levels which benefits hair, skin, nails.

kingkuta · 05/01/2021 17:34

It also increases bone density and helps joint aches and pains

52today · 05/01/2021 17:46

This thread reminds me there’s a skin diet- Perricone which seems to be mainly salmon & spinach. Has anyone done it?

lilylongjohn · 05/01/2021 17:50

Good quality face wash routine, wash, toner, eye serum and moisturiser. I use Estée Lauder for everything except the toner where I use clinique.

I'm interested in peoples views on foundation too. I used to use Estée Lauder but not sure it's cutting the mustard any longer

Separateatone · 05/01/2021 18:44

Kingkuta sorry I should have been clearer. I know what it’s for, I just don’t get why eating it will make any difference, any more than eating moisturiser or retinol.
