Women under 50 need not respond

377 replies

AnotheChinHair · 02/01/2021 10:28

Sorry for such an ageist subject title, but I am often drawn to threads that ask for foundation, shampoo, etc. recommendations and then realise that the OP and respondents are in their 30s and feel like I need some discussion with women my age.

My hair has changed, my skin looks different, my body aches, my eyebrows are faint and full of greys... I was wondering if you're 50 or over, could you share your wisdom on how you've adapted your grooming?

I'd be particularly interested in hair products (my hair is fine, prone to frizz and def. thinning and receding), my skin is still combination I think, and I would like to find a long lasting oil free full/medium coverage foundation that doesn't look dry around my eyes (currently using ELDW), and also supplements that make you feel and look better.

I have a horrible carb face after the sugar excesses of Christmas, and I have stopped drinking alcohol as I clearly don't tolerate it anymore.

I should exercise more but my knee hurts.
Recently started hrt patches and that has helped with night sweats.

Hope others can share what's been helpful.

@Destinysdaughter I had Botox for the first time in august and I'm really pleased with it. They don't have to be heavy handed I think mine is quite subtle

@Destinysdaughter @Fortherosesjoni70

I use Kajal Waterline Eyeliner by VASANTI - you can get it on Amazon. I wouldn't say there's zero transfer to the lower lid but nit enough to bother me, and its good fir sensitive eyes, which I have. I find the easiest way to apply is to use one finger to pull my eyelid up slightly revealing the waterline and then draw along it. Lots of people swear by putting a mirror flat onto a counter top and looking down into it though.

@Marmunia1975

To be honest, it's what you put in your body that will affect your appearance. I have been vegetarian for 37 years and vegan for three and I am approaching 50. My hair is long and blonde and voluminous and I have never coloured it. I run about 20km per week, my periods are light and pain-free. Also drink plenty of water!
Jive been vegetarian for 35 years and started the menopause around 44 ish. I have thinning hair too. Some of it is luck of the draw.

Tightlining is NOT drawing along the waterline. So many people believe it is. It is drawing in to the base of the upper eyelashes.

@Want2beme

Fortherosesjoni70 do you buy Olaplex via their website? My hair's dry, but I'm wondering if I should actually change the hair colouring process and maybe that'll have less of a drying effect.
I bought a set of holiday small ones from asos when they had a discount on. It meant i could try it and see how i got on. The only thing that is very annoying with olaplex is that its so thick to get out the bottle. I just keep mine turned upside down.

I got this but had 20% off ages ago. I have since bought more conditioner. I bough the oil separately.

Elemis Pro Collagen Marine cream changed my skin hugely (in a good way). It's expensive but lasts ages as you only need a tiny bit. I use it with the Pro Collagen cleanser.
I use Arbonne cc cream which is much lighter than a foundation and contains spf plus their mascara and a bright lipstick
I take vit D/zinc tablets, folic acid and 100 mcg of levothyrixine every day
I occasionally get my brows tinted or use a brow powder
I'm far less vain than I used to be and will leave the house without make up which I never would when I was younger.
I'm told I look 50 rather than 60 and my hair is the best it's ever been but no idea why - other than I use much better quality products than I did

annevonkleve · 03/01/2021 16:34

I'm nearly 49 so not far off. I use Superdrug's vitamin E range for facial skin, and Aveda cherry almond shampoo for hair - hairdressers comment how much hair I have, so hair loss doesn't (yet) appear to be an issue for me. Because I WFH I hardly wear make-up, but have found I react to some mascaras, so use the Blinc "tube" type most of the time. I haven't worn eye shadow for years and eye liner also makes my eyes go gungey.

My periods are heavy and all over the place but I'm not aware of any other symptoms except that I sweat more when I go for a run than I used to. I run four times a week and work with a PT once a week to do weights and conditioning (currently online) and also have a turbotrainer so I can go cycling in the garage once or twice a week.

Like a pp I've had dark circles since forever and nothing works, and now they are turning into bags. It's a pity because my skin is good otherwise :(

I take a multivitamin and an iron tablet every day - Sainsbury's own MV, nothing expensive, and Ferraglobin iron. I use soluble versions to encourage me to drink more water.

Other than the eye bags and my stupid periods, I am ok.

I stopped colouring my hair just over 2 years ago. It is white/silver. It's so freeing and cheaper. Just a cut and blow dry. Only managed 3 this year due to Covid. I use the purple shampoos but beware Charles Worthington Ultra Violet. It stained my scalp purple and the hair on the top of my headHmm though I think it was out of date. Threw it out and used the John Frieda one for silver hair. Will maybe try the Ultra Violet one more time hope it works out as I have quite a stash due to Boots having it on offer should have stuck to the toning violet Plantur 39 also does a purple shampoo and was thinking of trying it if I can remember which Superdrug store I saw it in.
For my face I love Pur 4 in 1 mineral powder. It doesn't sit in the wrinkles and you can just do a light dusting. It gives good coverage of any minor blemishes. I can only get it in Marks and Spencers

FelicityFeathers · 03/01/2021 16:49

@likeamillpond hi. Yes they are relatively high maintenance in some ways and not at all in others. With keratin micro bonds, you can go 6-12 weeks between appointments. It all depends on how fast your hair grows. I manage 8 weeks

peaceanddove · 03/01/2021 17:01

For those interested in tight lining, Laura Mercier does a specific product called Tightline Cake Liner which is fantastic. You apply it with a damp eyeliner brush into the roots of your upper lashes and it stays all day. It's brilliant x

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 17:13

Its the flick i cant do. I can do it on my daughter smooth and beautiful young eyelids but on mine, it just turns out a splodgy mess.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 17:13

I can line the top of my eyelids easily. Just the flick upwards eludes me.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 17:17

When it drags over it it doesnt leave a line just a dotty mess.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 17:17

When i say drags i just mean it kind of catches the skin. Maybe i have wee creases there that arent seen untli i try this!

CarnageAtTheJanuarySales · 03/01/2021 17:28

Watching with interest as I’m 55 in a couple of weeks and looking for ideas.
I’ve just stopped washing my hair every other day , just twice a week now with a dry shampoo in between. Works well as I work three days a week, so Sunday I wash it, Wednesday I dry shampoo it.

BasiliskStare · 03/01/2021 18:19

All I can offer is - drink more water - it does make difference - never done HRT - though two close friends have - one when she stopped - all symptoms came back . for sleeping a very decent fan & a weighted blanket - never slept so well. Foundation - MAC body & face - really really light & doesn't get stuck in any crevices ( Grin ) - Also because of a different condition , I was also prescribed v high dosage Vit D ( nothing to do with Covid but just to counteract other medication and apparently "A woman of my age" anything which counteracts uptake of vitamin D - not great because osteoporosis etc. You can get vitamin D tablets from Boots but need to take a lot. Other than that I'm growing out grey & once done will get some little highlights done round my face.

Bizarrely I have found that my 11 lines on forehead have got less as I have got older ( although that might be because they have been superseded by other forehead lines Grin )

Gulp! I've only just gone ahead and actually booked a consultant appointment for my tummy tuck. Terrified. And, excited Confused

BlueThistles · 03/01/2021 18:31
@BlueThistles. The colour is gorgeous - looks really healthy. Can you brush your hair?
yes absolutely... just treat it like your own hair... just more delicately ...I use a looped brush which is designed for extensions... it prevents more aggressive pulling and keeps the extensions in good condition and is kinder to your scalp...

plus.. my hair simply does not grow.. so I don't get the regrow younger woman would experience naturally...having this no growth issue has actually been a weird side benefit...

@likeamillpond

loads of places do weave now... and bonds.. have a google near you.. you'll find loads of specialists doing it.. I go into Glasgow to get mines done... there are lots of salons there..but obvs due to covid getting an appt can be harder at the mo...

I use a brush similar to this ... the loops protect the extensions ...

the weave is not for everyone... but I love it ladies .. it's my treat to me.. a few times a year 💕

How exciting even lol 🎉🥰

@Want2beme

hi there.. there are lots of great remedies out there.. but when you see you GP ask him to consider Soolantra which is also known as Ivermectin..

Ive tried so many... some worked for a while ... but Ive been using Soolantra for a year and my nose cheek area where I'm affected is much calmer and has remained so..

it's obviously what works for you ... but it's quite new and your GP might not consider it until you've tried other options...

good luck 🌺

So back to me everyone Grin, what foundation can I try so I can ditch ELDW (Fresco) that is long lasting, oil free and good for mature skin?

OP posts:
PeaceLoveAndCandy · 03/01/2021 19:54

I have also been using Estee Lauder DoubleWear in Fresco for donkies years, with MAC Studio fix NW25 on top, and I fancy a change. Matching foundation to your skin tone is all very well but I need COLOUR on my face to feel human.
