Women under 50 need not respond

Sorry for such an ageist subject title, but I am often drawn to threads that ask for foundation, shampoo, etc. recommendations and then realise that the OP and respondents are in their 30s and feel like I need some discussion with women my age.

My hair has changed, my skin looks different, my body aches, my eyebrows are faint and full of greys... I was wondering if you're 50 or over, could you share your wisdom on how you've adapted your grooming?

I'd be particularly interested in hair products (my hair is fine, prone to frizz and def. thinning and receding), my skin is still combination I think, and I would like to find a long lasting oil free full/medium coverage foundation that doesn't look dry around my eyes (currently using ELDW), and also supplements that make you feel and look better.

I have a horrible carb face after the sugar excesses of Christmas, and I have stopped drinking alcohol as I clearly don't tolerate it anymore.

I should exercise more but my knee hurts.
Recently started hrt patches and that has helped with night sweats.

Hope others can share what's been helpful.

Thank you @Melange99 - sounds bloody brilliant. Will get me some of that!

MyOtherProfile · 03/01/2021 08:59

Thanks for starting this thread. I need this!

52today · 03/01/2021 09:25

Final attention seeking picture 😉
I find the best moisturiser is the one I’ll use. So for now that’s coconut oil, rather than something £££ I’ll be careful with. I also use frownies and have done so for 20 years. I really notice a difference if I run out so although it’s not a permanent wrinkle solution I’ll continue to as they’re cheap.
And lots of water.

Frownies! Never seen them before......might investigate!

Destinysdaughter · 03/01/2021 11:26

OneMoreForExtra I've tried tightlining but I find that the eyeliner transfers to the lower line, which does not look good! Can you recommend an eyeliner that doesn't do that?

Oh and another top tip, Korean sheet masks! They give your skin a fantastic boost. Wink

Hollybutnoivy · 03/01/2021 11:28

Frownies only last about 20 minutes for me so not worth the hassle.

ShandlersWig · 03/01/2021 11:40

Ive been reading the thread and been inspired to get a grip this year. After nearly a yearvof WFH and limited social contact I fear I might be losing my grip. I'm not a looker by any means but have always found when I make the effort I can look and feel groomed and 'together'. Have started with a face and hair mask I got for xmas.
Interested in weights, my small town has a ladies onky weights gym but it's more than 100 a month!

@Purplethrow

I’m 56 and still going through the menopause, I have recently started using Bravura Glycolic Acid , my skin does seem a bit smoother. I’m lucky that my hair doesn’t seem to have suffered but have ordered olaplex 3 to help with keeping it strong. My skin is soooo dry and now go to bed smothered in good old nivea.
I use olaplex. My hair is not thining but very dry. This has helped enormously. Has added shield to.my greys( growing them in)
Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 11:52

Tips on tight lining? I just can't do it. Pencil to use? I have tried and tried

Want2beme · 03/01/2021 11:53
@Want2beme

do you mean you might have rosacea type condition on your skin? Flowers
Possibly BlueThistles, but I haven't been to see a Dr about it. The pharmacist I asked said it could be rosacea, and he gave me an ointment to soothe it. It was a Kelkin product with aloe Vera. It was lovely to use, but that's about it. I don't get it anywhere else on my face, just on my nose, and it comes and goes.

The spots, I've had most of my adult life. I'm not covered in them, just sick to death of the few I do get regularly, and constantly having to conceal them Grin

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 11:53

I use olaplex shampoo, conditioner, oil and olaplex 3 I think it is. Its like a leave in conditioner.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 11:54

It can be applied after washing, wet or dry hair

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/01/2021 11:59

I got a mini gift set to try it out first. It had mostly all the olaplex bottles

VanCleefArpels · 03/01/2021 12:00

@Fortherosesjoni70 I saw a great technique from a Roman on Instagram called Pipa something (not a typo - one P only) who is also a QVC presenter. She keeps her eye closed and uses the pencil sling the top lash line then puts the pencil slightly under the lashes and swishes a couple of times and thus creates a tight line but also a bit of lower lash line smudginess too. Difficult to describe!

Want2beme · 03/01/2021 12:03

Fortherosesjoni70 do you buy Olaplex via their website? My hair's dry, but I'm wondering if I should actually change the hair colouring process and maybe that'll have less of a drying effect.

grownup2 · 03/01/2021 12:06

Great thread. 55 here and feeling vaguely baggy and sallow. I just spent half an hour clearing out my makeup drawer of sparkly and powdery things for my niece to play with. I recently bought this set from Glossier www.glossier.com/products/the-makeup-set (you choose your colours) and am really impressed with its ease of use and naturalness on an an ageing face. Boy Brow is quite subtle in Blonde; the mascara totally unsmudgy, looks natural and comes off with warm water; the Cloud blush spreads like a light wash and can be built up if you want (no danger of sudden doll cheeks). The foundation and concealer have been recommended here but I don't know my chances of identifying a suitable shade online.

Melange99 · 03/01/2021 12:18

@Destinysdaughter Could you pinpoint which Korean masks are the best?

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 12:27

Frownies only last about 20 minutes for me so not worth the hassle
Yes, plus going to bed with bits of brown paper stuck all over your face every night is waving a big goodbye to your sex life Grin

Destinysdaughter · 03/01/2021 12:33

There's lots of different Korean sheet masks, but I've tried these before and they were good.

grownup2 · 03/01/2021 12:38

And Sanctuary wet skin radiance has really improved my rough and bumpy skin on arms and legs which made me feel old
www.boots.com/sanctuary-spa-wet-skin-radiance-jelly-200ml-10263336
I had tried AHA creams and washes, but this is affordable (about £7 when on sale and lasts ages) quick to use as you finish a shower wet - and therefore I do find myself using it regularly. Might feel sticky till properly dry but then fine. No need for other body lotions for me.

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 12:38

I've used hundreds of Korean sheet masks over the years but none have been as good as the Briskin ones. The radiance mask in particular makes an instant difference to my skin

woodhill · 03/01/2021 13:27

@FippertyGibbett

For those of you exercising and complaining about joint pain, I’ve just had two weeks off my gym class and the difference in my joint pains and aches is noticeable. I know exercise good for you, but I do two classes a week and it makes my joints and muscles ache all week.
I get terrible hip pain so I try to do some stretching first which physio gave me. I do 20 minutes when possible of online exercise afterwards

I like the Avon vitamin C serum a.m. and have just bought Clarins double serum.

My hair is thicker and softer since I stopped dying but not keen on the grey

cathyandclare · 03/01/2021 14:59

For brunettes still fighting the grey, my hairdresser changed to Inoa a few years ago and the difference in the colour and condition is dramatic. Much shinier and less frizzy, also none of the orangey fading.

IndieTara · 03/01/2021 15:12

Ooh re bumpy skin I get it everywhere! 2 weeks ago I bought Cerave smoothing body wash and it's absolutely brilliant. Noticeably softer smoother skin and I use Palmers smoothing lotion on the problematic bits. It really really works

IndieTara · 03/01/2021 15:15

@Fortherosesjoni70 I gave up on pencils for tight lining and bought IT cosmetics tightline mascara. Really tiny thin brush but it works so well. Coupled with LVL lash lift when salons are open it gives fab results
