spf for oily/acne prone skin

rumandbiscuits · 01/01/2021 21:55

Shamefully I don't use spf on my face and I know I should, especially because I suffer terribly with cystic acne and have read countless times spf is a must for acne prone skin! I just worry I will spend a fortune on something that will break me out. Does anyone have any recommendations?

If you stay away from anything moisturising you should be ok, there’s an spf 50 mineral facial sunblock from ultrasun that’s ok with oily skin.

More importantly is your dr treating the acne?.

Everley · 01/01/2021 22:30

Ultrasun makes my skin very congested if I use it daily. I have the factor 50 from them. It also makes my oily skin evern oilier.

I have just started using Supergoop factor 30 and its much better for my oily skin.

cherrytreecottage · 01/01/2021 22:31

Heliocare 360 Oil-Free Gel SPF 50 - you can get it on Amazon for about £18

Laquila · 01/01/2021 22:32

I am a huge fan of Bioré Watery Essence SPF50 but it has quite a high alcohol content so won't suit everyone.

Tenpintonpin · 01/01/2021 22:37

I second Biore Watery Essence - literally everything else I've ever tried has made my spots worse.

Laquila · 01/01/2021 22:37

I also rate the Heliocare mentioned above, but I find the Bioré keeps me more matte.

Laquila · 01/01/2021 22:38

@Everley I'm interested to hear how the Supergoop goes - how does it compare to the Bioré or the Heliocare, if you've tried either of those?

Everley · 01/01/2021 22:40

@Laquila I haven’t tried either of those yet but they are on my list if the Supergoop doesn’t work out. I’m really impressed so far though - it’s mattifying, fab under makeup, doesn’t make my skin break out.

LyraSilvertongueBelacqua · 01/01/2021 22:46

Frezyderm

Anotheruser02 · 01/01/2021 22:58

What about a powder spf? They are like setting powders.

TableNiner · 01/01/2021 23:04

I quite like the Eucerin oil control but there are loads of decent options these days, that aren't clogging and chalky

hopsalong · 01/01/2021 23:13

I've just started using and like the Cetaphil Pro tinted moisturising cream, with mineral sunscreen of SPF 30. All the chemical ones eventually lead to breakouts and bumpy skin for me. It's good because slightly tinted but works fine on my very pale skin -- just a hint of coverage. In the summer when I need a higher SPF (not convinced I really need one at all at the moment, but trying to wear it all the time) the Isdin mineral ones are good, though leave a slight inevitable white cast.

I've tried the Biore and didn't really get on with it. Goes on very nicely but slightly perfumed and irritated my skin. (Had bad teenage acne but now more spot-prone with sensitive ageing skin.) I've also tried the Roc Effaclar cream with SPF but it's a chemical sunscreen and caused a lot of redness.

cherrytreecottage · 01/01/2021 23:47

I've never heard of the Biore Watery Essence, where can you buy it? I looked online but seems to be from abroad?

Ginkypig · 02/01/2021 00:49

This sounds very interesting can you post a link please?
SlB09 · 02/01/2021 00:51

I have tried lots - the only one that doesn't make my face shiney, Kiley, clogged etc has been fcetheory whipped face cream SPF 20. It's really quite light and my face stays Matt almost all day.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 02/01/2021 01:33

I find Heliocare keeps me Matt-est of all. And stays all day.
Don’t like Biore as much but it’s good.
Frezyderm is lovely and fab under makeup but I’m well shiny by early afternoon. I had high hopes for it as it’s v popular.
I also have Avene Cleanance one atm. I’m shiny by the afternoon with that too. But it’s good I think.
Oh and I’ve an EltaMD one and I love it. Really good, not quite as matt as Heliocare.

  1. - tie between Elta and Heliocare
  2. - Frezyderm
  3. - the rest of the above are in a puddle at 3

Yes I’m on a never-ending search for the holy grail of SPF!

Cherry889 · 02/01/2021 01:38

I like the body shop skin defence, I have greasy skin and find this to be really good

RacheyCat · 02/01/2021 07:00

I like the La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo with SPF. Specifically a cream for acne prone skin, but with SPF. I wish I could buy it here.

I'm currently on a waiting list to see a dermatologist. The only thing my doctor will prescribe me is antibiotics and antibiotic cream but I am pregnant now so have had to come off those. Since becoming pregnant my acne has slightly improved but it's still an issue.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! Loads for me to research and look into getting Grin

Where does everyone buy the biore from?

OP posts:
Ancientdecs · 02/01/2021 08:19

Watching for recommendations, now I'm older my skin is better in general but any SPF I've found just ruins it. I want something that is relatively matt but not drying, and that I can put make-up on over without it pilling everywhere.

OP, I'm not sure if you can take DIM supplements when pregnant, but I've been taking these for about 3-4 months now and have been super impressed by the difference. Flare ups of hormonal cystic acne - not seriously bad, but regular - were really bothering me and the DIM supplements have chased them away.

The other thing I used when pregnant was Effaclar Duo from La Roche Posay. Helped a lot even if it isn't a cure-all. Good luck

BillStickersIsInnocent · 02/01/2021 08:31

I like LRP, but just started using this one www.boots.com/ambre-solaire-ultra-light-sensitive-face-fluid-spf50plus-40ml-10274049 and really like it.

Vichy, the Body Shop defence, Frezyderm make my spots much worse.

Anotheruser02 · 02/01/2021 08:31

Gah81 · 02/01/2021 08:43

lrp shaka fluid works for me. If you had a spare £500 I would say it is well worth seeing a private dermatologist - the only thing which worked for me!
