How much do you spend on average, per month, on clothes and accessories?

Just that really! Just out of interest.

In normal times I budget £200 per month and usually spend that on average.

Unspeakably · 31/12/2020 11:09

Thanks @S0CKS. I think I'm somewhere between £100-£200 on average. Some months I'll spend a bit more than that and others I won't get near it.

£48 on some tops and £18 on some tights, I also spent £50 on some period pants, so £116 total in 2020, £10 a month?

WhatWouldPennyDo · 31/12/2020 15:27

Pre Covid and pre baby, probably about £500. City job, penchant for nice fabrics and expensive shoes. Currently living in post partum leggings and easy access tops, with eau de bébé vomit. Style rut central here.

happytoday73 · 31/12/2020 15:29

2020...probably £250 total

happytoday73 · 31/12/2020 15:30

Whoops... Posted to soon
... For the whole year...

viccat · 31/12/2020 15:32

Way too much currently. Going to do a low/no-spend 2021 - I'm giving myself a budget of £200 for the whole year and then can only add to it by selling clothes/shoes and using that money.

Notverygrownup · 31/12/2020 15:36

Like the pps I average between £10-20 per month, in a normal year - £25 if you include shoes. I've lost weight recently, so have been having fun revising clothes which were at the back of the wardrobe, and giving them a second life.

I have fairly full wardrobes, and really cannot justify buying much, when there are lovely things in there to be worn: one of the advantages of being old and a bit settled, I guess. I probably spent £40-50 a month when younger/single/going out and about more.

cherrypiepie · 31/12/2020 15:38

I was wondering this too. I reckon I spent around £400 this year if that. Which is very little compared to what I used to.

This year have sold most of my clothes and 'gone capsule' and will spend a bit more this year on decent coats, shoes, and bags.

Trying to be more sustainable and frugal too. I reckon about £800 this year £300 for spring summer and £400 autumn winter (need boots and two coats next year). Maybe a bit more as I need a new work nag which will be £100.

I use to budget monthly but yearly is better for me now as I can buy more expensive item or go and have a stock up.

Unspeakably · 31/12/2020 15:39

I do include shoes! Well done on your weight loss

I'm not planning a zero spend 2021, but I'd like to buy less and sell some things. I've made a start on selling by sending some clothes to a recycling place which gives you a (very small) amount of money for good, secondhand clothes.

My plan is to have a capsule and buy things to fit that capsule which will last a long time.

My shopping tends to be a bit feast or famine. I can go months with buying nothing at all then do a huge amount in All Saints on 2 items in one go.
This year has been a famine year, so less than £20/month average.

smeerf · 31/12/2020 16:01

I've finished having children (two is enough!). So once I lose this baby weight that's it, no more yo-yoing clothes sizes. I can't wait to donate all my maternity/breastfeeding/"fat" clothes and jus pare down my wardrobe to things I love.

I'm going to invest in a capsule wardrobe too OP - all nice things, good quality, stylish that will last. I just picked up a Vivienne Westwood scarf in the sale that I LOVE. Rather than randomly spending £20 here and there on scarves that are ok, I now have a scarf that feels like such a luxury and goes with all my coats. I really want to embrace that with every thing I buy.

Did you see that thread from early 2020 about the woman who strategised her wardrobe, planned it with a spreadsheet and only bought things on her list? I will try and find it.

CuteOrangeElephant · 31/12/2020 16:06

Too little. This year I have bought some pants, two t-shirts and a pair of jeans.

In 2021 I will have to seriously update my wardrobe because I really don't have many clothes, especially for summer. So I will say about 50 pounds per month next year.

Unspeakably · 31/12/2020 16:09

Yes! I remember that thread and was trying to remember what it was called! If you find it, yes please do post it here please Xmas Smile. That's exactly the approach I'm aiming for.

Maybe £30ish per month, averaged out across the year. Back in pre-baby clothes now and I’d forgotten so much of what I had so it’s like having a whole new wardrobe anyway.

S0CKS · 31/12/2020 16:23

I think it's a good idea to do a yearly budget rather than a monthly budget as you say it feels a bit 'easier' I suppose to justify the more expensive item that might wipe a months budget out.

S0CKS · 31/12/2020 16:32

Oh that spreadsheet idea is absolutely fabulous, I love a spreadsheet.

Unspeakably · 31/12/2020 16:37

Same S0CKS! Also might make bullet journalling my new year project and I think making my wardrobe a high quality capsule is definitely going to take up some pages.

I started a spreadsheet this year during lockdown - wanted to keep an eye on my spending and also to keep track of all the parcels & refunds with online shopping.

On average I've spent £110 per month.

What horrifies me and makes me pause for thought though is that I've kept roughly 1/3 of what I ordered - I've generated a huge amount of returns, which makes me feel slightly sick because of the carbon footprint I'm causing.

In the new year I hope to be more discerning about what I order online.

I'm also wondering if I'll ever get to that stage where I'm satisfied and don't need to buy anything more, my wardrobe is so so full Hmm

Floralnomad · 31/12/2020 16:53

Since Feb last year I’ve bought a bra (£20) and a pair of yard boots (£46) , I rarely buy clothes unless I actually need something particular so although I’ve not actually been in any shops it hasn’t really changed my spending habits .

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/12/2020 16:55

Probably around £50 but it averages out, sometimes nothing, sometimes more.

LoveFromDeauville · 31/12/2020 16:57

Depends and there are plenty of months where I buy nothing. I have no time and this year has been exceptional! It probably averages out at about £600 per month over the course of a year.

Viviennemary · 31/12/2020 16:58

Tend to buy in spurts. Probably around £600 a year.
