Toying with the idea of not buying any new clothes/shoes/accessories in 2021

I spend a lot of my time looking for new clothes, ordering clothes and returning clothes. I have more than enough to last a year and wonder if I should challenge myself, just feels very daunting. I would save a lot of time, money and environmental impact. Has anyone done this or do you think you could?

I'm failing miserably. I've bought three necks, 2 handbags and 1 coat. I'm not giving up yet though damn it!!!

Gurufloof · 30/01/2021 08:51

I've bought three necks

Didnt know you could do that, might make my three chins more bearable. Separate them one neck, one chin?

dudsville · 30/01/2021 09:11

Oh how funny! That should be necklaces obviously!

CraftyYankee · 30/01/2021 09:15

@Gurufloof 😂😂 well played

TheChampagneGalop · 30/01/2021 13:47

I bought a pair of trousers the other day, replacing an old pair.
That is one new piece of clothing these last 2 months. I can't remember the last time I wasn't shopping a lot of new clothing all the time. I've been really into shopping since I was a teenager.
So I'm proud Grin

AmberItsACertainty · 30/01/2021 16:59

I looked on the sale page if my favourite website yesterday. And I didn't buy anything! Not even the stuff I'd had my eye on. Because I don't need it. I really don't.

I've accepted my shopaholism ramping up during lockdown, there's far more unhealthy things I could have been doing to cope. But I'm at the stage where I pay for DPD next day delivery half the time, just because I'm embarrassed to accept yet another parcel from the postie, who must think I'm either mad or rich or wasteful. Time to stop.

@TheChampagneGalop I've replaced buying with selling! It's more frustrating but it's helping with the clutter and taking up time dealing with potential buyers instead of browsing for potential purchases. I'm reading a lot too, mostly novels.

TableNiner · 30/01/2021 17:07

I nearly fell off the wagon today with some Clarks shoes - such good discounts around - but have managed to resist. One more day and it’s February!

I've had such a funny few years for fashion. 2018 I was pregnant until November and then for about 6 months I spent loads of money on breastfeeding t shirts. I lost 2 stone, needed to buy 4 or 5 pairs of jeans and a collection of new tops. Went back to work part time in October 2019, so needed nicer stuff plus baby-friendly clothes. Got made redundant in March 2020, then obviously had the sweltering lockdown so bought a load of shorts and floaty trousers. New job July 2020, needed 2 interview outfits, and then things suitable for 2.5 days in the office.

I fully intended not to buy anything in 2021 but since Jan 4th when I started WFH I've bought 3 pairs of joggers, 2 pairs of leggings, new sheepskin slippers and a hoodie. I'm done now though. Promise...

I nearly fell off the wagon this afternoon (I'm the one doing clothes AND makeup AND skincare). An email took me to the e.l.f. website and I was lusting over their cream blushers. Then a dose of reality washed over me when I realised a cream blush and mask combo is never going to work, so I closed the page in a hurry. They'll still be there when mask wearing is a distant memory if I want them that badly. Halo

One more day to go and I will have bought nothing in any of the three categories in January. February here I come. If I can do it for one month I can do it for two.

NeedWineNow · 30/01/2021 23:31

I have decided that is it for sale shopping. I'm going to try and do a no clothes/accessories/shoes spend February. I have had a bit of a turn out and have stuff to go to the charity shop when they open. The only things needed now is homeware - a new microwave and toaster - so will be getting them but no to anything else.

Itssuzeimoverhere · 31/01/2021 06:03

Well that’s January done and I managed not to buy any clothes or accessories, am also dieting so can’t console myself with chocolate but have decluttered the pantry and am contemplating the hell hole that is the cupboard under the sink (slinks out of style and beauty and steps proudly into housekeeping)

woodhill · 31/01/2021 12:15

I have been buying quite a bit in the sales. I do try and buy tops for next season etc. I also buy toiletries but no make up.sometimes kitchen stuff.

I think it is boredom and nothing to spend money on as you can't book anything like a holiday or theatre tickets.

The interest rates are so low too but I do save as well

S0CKS · 31/01/2021 12:33

Jumping in for an attempt at no spend February.
I attempted no spend January, ended up buying and returning a lot of stuff, but brought a couple of bits that I kept.

EatingAllThePies · 31/01/2021 17:11

Eugh today was hard. So many discounts and vouchers around but I've closed the websites and stepped away. I've moved my clothes spending onto craft spending though when what I really need to switch it to is losing weight Blush

NeedWineNow · 31/01/2021 17:36

As a last hurrah to January spending we've today ordered a new microwave, toaster and kettle, and I've ordered a slim card holder and silver bag from the Accessorize sale. I'm waiting for some glitzy sock trainers and my Foo Fighters Vans to come. I will download the new Foo Fighters album this week, and make no apologies for thatGrin

Parsley1234 · 31/01/2021 17:40

I wanted some Trinny London makeup but didn’t want to buy it with earnings so set myself a target of raising money through selling stuff through eBay I’m up to £550 I spent £250 on makeup and £350 on nearly new airwrap it was fun I’m going to keep going. As a side note I never ever buy new as I can’t bear the markup I always shop second hand you may have to wait a bit but you always get what you want in the end last week I bought a brand new boxed pair of kooples boots rrp £360 for £80 at auction

SpeckledyHen · 31/01/2021 19:36

Feeling quite smug as I’m £5 up on the month. I sold a top for £20 and bought a replacement pair of leggings for £15 .

I’ve spent hours putting bras into baskets and taking them out though .
I might be having an operation sometime this year and will need a very soft , possibly front opening bra for leaving hospital and recovery. Feel that I should be sensible and get one ready, although I’ve no idea when I will go under the knife .

I need to have a rummage around to see what else I can sell.

TheChampagneGalop · 03/02/2021 12:33

I've started to sell my unused clothes and jewellry online too. It's like a reverse shopping kick when something gets sold!

cheezy · 03/02/2021 12:39

I’m interested in doing this. I can always think of something I ‘need’. I don’t really need it at all though.
eBay is my downfall. I rarely buy new. A whole year might be difficult but maybe it’s possible.

MrsBobDylan · 03/02/2021 17:05

Just seen this thread and may join you. I've spent 6 months selling clothes and footwear on eBay and giving away the rest to charity.

At the beginning of January I was the proud owner of not very much at all, after years of wasteful buying.

I have spent £250 this month on jeans, 5 tops and boots. And that should be it now as I have more than enough and am happy that it all looks ok-ish on me.

Gurufloof · 03/02/2021 19:07

A whole year might be difficult but maybe it’s possible

I thought an entire month would be unmanageable, yet I have done that and now into month 2. Unheard of in my whole adult life.

Oly4 · 03/02/2021 20:39

I’m in, I didn’t buy a thing in Jan, first time I’ve gone a month in years. Lockdown is helping... what is the point of all these gorgeous clothes when I’m living in elastic waistbands?
I have dozens and dozens of gorgeous tops just waiting to be worn once were free. No need for any more.
Shopping to excess is just a bit silly isn’t it? All that returning

AmberItsACertainty · 03/02/2021 22:01

Well I failed again and yesterday bought a small collection of cheap berets. I'm spending a lot less than I usually do though.

@MrsBobDylan how do you feel about getting rid of all those clothes? Any regrets at all? I've been thinking about this, but a lot of mine is as yet unworn and I like it all, it's just I have too much really. Selling it having bought it and not yet worn it seems so wasteful, like I might as well have burnt the money. So I'm torn between selling and having more space, or keeping and not buying more clothes until I need them (in about ten years time!).

NeedWineNow · 03/02/2021 22:08

My sparkly sock trainers came today. They are lovely and so comfortable. Just right for wearing indoors to feel a little bit smarter even with my joggers.

MrsBobDylan · 03/02/2021 22:39

@AmberItsACertainty no regrets at all. At first I could only pick out a few items and was convinced I needed all the other bits.

Then I thought about how frequently I wore them, the last time I wore them and if they were duplicates. For example, I discovered I owned various versions of a blue sweatshirt (roughly 10!). I chose my favourite one and got rid of the rest.

Then I tried stuff on and listened to the little voice in my head which said stuff like "you don't suit khaki green" "trousers with pleats in the front enhance your tummy" and voila! that was 3/4 of my wardrobe gone.

I did my colours online by reading free articles which really helped and made a list of every item of clothing, footwear, handbags and scarfs that I own, which I pruned down to 47.

It's been liberating. I now need to find the successful formula to stop myself buying - all advice welcome Smile
