Toying with the idea of not buying any new clothes/shoes/accessories in 2021

I spend a lot of my time looking for new clothes, ordering clothes and returning clothes. I have more than enough to last a year and wonder if I should challenge myself, just feels very daunting. I would save a lot of time, money and environmental impact. Has anyone done this or do you think you could?

Managed to stop myself buying towels of all things. I think I just love shopping in general.
I've just counted my jumpers/hoodies. I have far too many. I always wear the same 3 and I'm menopausal so not worn any for some time. I cant get rid of any (and I don't want to) but when I start wearing them again I will bloody well rotate them.

OwlLovesTea · 24/01/2021 22:06

I know, If I stop buying clothes, I buy more makeup, or I buy a bag or earrings or perfume.

It must be a need to treat myself.

Purpleblondelady · 24/01/2021 23:21

That's the thing I think I'll end up swopping to buying something else. I've got a list of perfume I want to try now instead Blush

I used my Massimo Dutti gift card to get a bag and long wool/silk cardi in the sale. They've arrived but I'm not entirely convinced. I'll have another look after I finish work but I think they'll probably be going back.

Well, at least you are less likely to buy perfume online on a whim. I wanted some new perfume before Xmas and when I went to the shops, they weren't letting people use the sample bottles. So it might be a while until you can indulge.

I've started doing the 'earn £10 a day' challenge in the evenings to distract from the mindless shopping scroll. I wish I'd done this in the first lockdown. And eaten less. Blush

Almost the end of the first month -- we are 1/12th of the way there.

CleverCatty · 26/01/2021 13:39

I've tended to buy more things for DNephew (2.5 years) and DBro - Cos jumper and Ebay Fatface one today, got DNephew Tu Sainsburys and Cos jumpers on Ebay.

My DM with my help has also bought DBro a new Fatface jumper (blue stripes), DNephew some mittens (M&S), DBro some M&S black touchscreen (for phone) gloves and DSIL some warm thermal socks.

I second @DaisyWaisy’s recommendation, How To Break Up With Fast Fashion, great book, very readable and amusing.

I bought some trousers on eBay for £12, second hand doesn’t count! I always struggle with bottoms so swoop in if my saved searches show something up.

Still finding it relatively easy at the moment as I have way more clothes than a lockdown lifestyle demands. Wonder if the change of season might be harder but then if I don’t look, I can’t be tempted. I even know what I’ll wear if my friend’s wedding manages to go ahead at some point, I have nicer things than I could probably buy anyway. I feel I have most bases covered and stuff that suits my lifestyle.

It is quite refreshing not be constantly repacking parcels. The Hermes guy waved at me the other day as he passed by but must be wondering why he doesn’t stop at my house anymore.

I am intrigued by the future of shopping, what with all the bricks and mortar stores hitting the dust. Shopping is/was one of my hobbies for twenty five years but it feels like everything has changed and may never be the same again.

What have you all replaced shopping with?
I struggle with the impulse to look at shopping sites when I'm online. I try to distract myself with things like MN instead Grin

Gurufloof · 26/01/2021 20:45

I haven't yet replaced it with anything. But my huge house repair is on my mind every time I delete emails instead of looking.
As a pp said we are almost one month done. I'm currently £250 saved to my repair. Its that which will keep me going. However after the repair is done all bets are off Grin

Sootybear · 26/01/2021 20:48

I did this about 8 years ago. Didn't even buy clothes from charity shops. The only thing I did buy was knickers as mine were appalling and wouldn't last the year . It was fun actually finding all the clothes at home I'd forgotten about and trying new combinations. Go for it. I did tell all my friends and family what I was doing and they were very supportive.

Purpleblondelady · 27/01/2021 13:06

@kwiksavenofrillsusername do you mind me asking what you do for the £10/day challenge? I do online surveys, but I rarely make more than £1/day. I have bought a few sample perfumes in January and Zara full sizes. I have other samples I'd like to buy too til I find what I'm after.

I saw a dress that I loved this morning, it's from one of those websites that always does discounts every so often and I had in mind that I might get it when it's on offer, but I need to remind myself that it's 100% polyester so terrible for the environment, it's the kind of material that will snag easily and then look scruffy oh and that I just don't need it!

TableNiner · 27/01/2021 14:12

@TheChampagneGalop I’ve just been doing more reading and watching Netflix etc. Have also spent time reviewing the clothes I already have and putting them on StyleBook and trying to think of new combinations or ways of wearing them.

The Money Matters forum has £10 a day challenges with lots of links -- here is the Jan one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legal_money_matters/4123153-jan-2021-earn-10-day-thread-it-s-2021-let-s-earn-some

Thank you Kwik, I looked at Appen etc before Christmas, I might look into more once the kids return to school.

I did a quick tot up of clothes I bought last year, off the top of my head I've worked out that I bought about 38 items of clothes (at least) So that's at least 3 items/month, even if I don't manage to go a full year without buying any I can definitely reduce the figure down from that. All of it was bought on the internet, so came in plastic packaging and was delivery to add to my carbon footprint. Also none of it was second hand. We had a positive change to our income last year, in the Couple of years before this I didn't really have the disposable income to buy many clothes so I was replacing things. Thanks everyone for making me think. Today I am wearing a dress that I've had for about 9 years, I used to wear it a lot but I haven't worn it for a couple of years at least, it was second hand from Ebay and I've worn it in a different way to how I used to.

Purpleblondelady · 28/01/2021 13:31

Also out of the 7 dresses I bought last year I have only worn 3 of them. Obviously last year was an odd one and when we can go out and about again I will wear them, I just didn't want the first wear of them to be just sat around the house. 1 of them I definitely should have sent back because it's not the most flattering Blush

dayslikethese1 · 29/01/2021 02:02

Thanks to the pps who recommended the 30 Wears app; I downloaded yesterday and had great fun cataloguing my wardrobe Grin

NeedWineNow · 29/01/2021 14:14

I've failed miserably - a new leopard print scarf and some Vans Foo Fighters Hi-Tops are on their way. It's been a hard week.

Gurufloof · 29/01/2021 20:43

Almost the end of the month. It's been difficult but I've never (since having disposable income) gone a month without buying something. Whether clothes/shoes for me or someone else or bedding or linens or some item, I've bought it as I've seen it and coveted it. Well actually waited for it in the sales but still.
I did go off the rails with some seasoning called "slap ya mamma"
All of 6 quid!!!
I tell you this house repair is changing my mindset completely.

NeedWineNow · 29/01/2021 22:40

@Gurufloof Slap ya Mamma seasoning??!!! we bought some in New Orleans on our first cruise in 2005 and haven't seen it since! Where did you get it from?

Gurufloof · 29/01/2021 22:48

Good ol amazon

Gurufloof · 29/01/2021 22:48

Posted too soon, is it fabulous?

Gurufloof · 29/01/2021 22:52

Sigh, I'm gonna stop posting now. Too drunk to get it right.

NeedWineNow · 29/01/2021 23:55
