Jewellery - how much do you spend?

JaceLancs · 29/12/2020 01:25

I’m wondering if my jewellery buying habits are getting a bit out of hand!
It’s been a strange year for many of us and I’ve cheered myself up by investing in jewellery - not been able to go on holiday - buying less clothes etc as nowhere to go to where them etc
Just had a little count up and I’ve probably spent 5k (admittedly some of that was part of an insurance claim)
If it helps justify it - I always try to buy well enough that I can recoup outlay or make a profit

Why not OP! If you have the money then it sounds like a fun way to spend.

I'm interested to know how you know you will recoup or invest?

And also what material are you buying? I can see how gold holds/grows but if something else it would be interesting to be educated in this!

caperplips · 29/12/2020 02:13

I was thinking about the same thing today and calculated it up & it comes to over £4k & that's on 2 rings & a necklace over the course of the year.
All 3 are 18kt gold with diamonds & other gemstones. The rings are not engagement/ wedding either
I adore nice jewellery & it gives me enormous pleasure! And dh loves indulging that so its win win!

WeCameToDance · 29/12/2020 07:52

I feel better already reading this thread because I thought I had a problem but compared to 4k I’m fine!

I just worked it out and I’ve spent £980. My tastes don’t extend to diamonds mind you. I prefer skulls and crossbones 😂.

I got two rings from The Great Frog, a gorgeous love heart ring from Tessa Metcalfe and a few items from Bloody Mary Metal. I’ve said this before but I take my style inspiration from Mr T...

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 29/12/2020 08:11

I think if you can afford it and it cheers you up then why not? Enjoy it OP.

I spend very little on jewellery; I wish I had the budget but I'd have to forgo lots of the clothes and beauty products and I'm not willing to do that 😂 also scared of losing nice jewellery!

One thing I would like to buy is a really nice divorce ring, to celebrate when I'm finally shot of my horrible husband. I don't wear my engagement and wedding rings any more and I'd like to have something nice that I've chosen and paid for myself to replace them, I miss wearing something nice like an engagement ring.

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/12/2020 08:55

I really like jewellery but don't buy precious metals in general. So more expensive end for me is tatty devine type level of around £70is .but most less than this. I have quite a collection and really love wearing it.

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 08:59

Hmmmm. I have judt added mine up and it has come to about £500.

DH buys me alot of my nicer jewellery and spends probably circa £2 k a year.

I spend money on classic pieces like pearls and gemstones. This year i bought sapphire stud earrings and baroque drop pearls set in white gold.

I also spend money on very good fake jewellery. I have enough of the real stuff that i can slip in the odd fake convincingly. Grin

LlamaofDrama · 29/12/2020 10:20

I spent £3.29 on a pair of magnetic stud earrings on Ebay just before Christmas. Last thing before that was a bracelet for £15 in a local shop about 3 years ago.

My spendy habits don't include jewellery 🤣.

Giftwithpurchase · 29/12/2020 10:24

Now I'm in my late 30s I'm keen to start building up a collection of high end jewellery.. this year I have spent £3,000 on a ring and a necklace - and I plan to buy more next year and for my 40th. I see it as a good investment for my daughter and I've fallen out of love with my designer bags recently due to the crazy price increases! Slight problem is I never really wear much jewellery day to day at the moment - but I'm hoping that having a few 'everyday' diamonds will mean I do - one of my 2021 goals is to wear a bit of subtle bling everyday Grin

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 10:33

I have everyday pearls. I have pearl studs I wear in the absence of any other earrings. I find that it just makes me happy to have that in my life.

FippertyGibbett · 29/12/2020 10:34

I spend very little, in fact the only jewellery I buy is the cheap stuff from Primark to take on holiday.

Icenii · 29/12/2020 11:33

I was looking at Moniva V and was wondering whether it is better to just buy 18k gold as it is mainly vermeil, and seems expensive although I love the gold coin like pendants very much.

HermioneWeasley · 29/12/2020 11:35

@Icenii agree, it just seems too expensive for vermeil

OP, spend what you like, but don’t kid yourself that jewellery is an investment or you’ll make a profit (unless you’re amazing at picking up actually diamonds for a few quid in a charity shop)

FippertyGibbett · 29/12/2020 11:49

I personally don’t see jewellery as an investment as it goes out of fashion.
I would always look at it as scrap value.

Tehmina23 · 29/12/2020 11:52

I like to spend money on jewellery but I have to be creative within a limited budget.

For Christmas I bought myself a sterling silver 18" necklace from Jewellery by ZM on Etsy; with a Hamsa heart hand & an evil eye pendant.
It was £26.90 & means a lot to me as the Hamsa hand & evil eye represent many of the holidays I've been on with my sister & friends.

I usually buy sterling silver or sterling silver with gold plating.

I have bought 3 sterling silver pendants from my local charity shop recently for under a fiver each - a st.Christopher; a dragon, & a lovely pink & white mother of Pearl heart.

My favourite places to shop are: Etsy, a local boutique Sugar Mango, Essential jewellers, & Accessorize. I also liked Simply Silver by Debenhams.
There are 3 other good local boutiques which I have jewellery from that sell amazing silver- Volcano, Enigma & Skinny Wrists.

I have 2 favourite pieces - a heavy twisted silver bangle a 26th birthday present from my sister; & an 18 carat gold chain & Catholic medallion with an inscription dated 1934 that I inherited from a family friend.

irregularegular · 29/12/2020 11:55

Gosh. Really? I never really buy myself jewellery. Very occasionally something that costs up to about £30, and even that feels like a frivolous extravagance (though I have recently persuaded myself that is daft and it is perfectly OK). DH sometimes buys me (costume) jewellery as a present. He bought be a very pretty vintage choker for Christmas. Wouldn't really be happy with him spending more than a couple of hundred or so.

We're quite high earners with no real spending constraints. Just never really occurred to me to spend money on jewellery!

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 12:11

[hint] estate auctions.

Dh bought for me for our wedding a 1950s gold bracelet with diamonds set in. He bought it for just shy of £1 k at an auction and it was valued at nearly 8 times that much.

Bloodhoundgang · 29/12/2020 13:01

I am with you. I buy my clothes on sale, get my hair cut once a year, am adept at yellow sticker cooking but I love jewellery.
I also know a very good jeweller so they pick stones etc to budget.
I draw the line at spendy earrings though. Too easily lost. I never spend more than 8quid on a pair or multipack.

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 13:04

I get my hair cut once a year also! I call it my 'annual summer haircut'.

JaceLancs · 29/12/2020 14:26

I’ve been buying and selling jewellery for 3&@£&

OP posts:
Icenii · 29/12/2020 14:59

Any advice on where to buy reasonably priced gold that isn't 9ct? It appears to have increased in price. I'd like some labordroite studs but seem very over priced for a non precious Stone.

JaceLancs · 29/12/2020 15:08

Posted too soon!
I’ve been buying and selling jewellery for over 35 years and have not made a loss yet - very occasionally I only get back what I paid
I buy from other dealers and auctions. pawnbrokers and cash converter type shops in poorer areas often have bargains too
Only twice found items in charity shops
I generally sell online or back to dealers
I used to sell at an antiques centre and do fairs but my current job just doesn’t give me enough spare time
Friends often ask me to source pieces for them
I tend to stick to gold, diamonds and opals as they are my personal preference
Foreign gold is usually 14 or 15 carat - in U.K. I only buy 18 carat

Most recent purchase - from Italy - 15 carat yellow gold, with 3 carat of diamonds

Jewellery - how much do you spend?

I like opals, sapphires and semi precious stones. I love this very much but just think the price is very high for 9ct. Obviously not a resell piece.

I love jewellery but never spend a lot - mostly costume or Lola Rose semi-precious stuff. we've got a really good local jeweller and I've had things remodelled by him. I recently took in a bag of old gold and some blue topaz earrings and ring which were set in silver which he put into gold to my design. The trade in on the gold paid for it.

user1494055864 · 29/12/2020 17:21

I got a £190 necklace, a £50 ring and £45 earrings. I don't need any more jewellery now.

I don't like wearing anything ridiculously expensive, as I work in a school, with 5 year olds.
