What brands do posh people wear in London

MrsDeadlock · 26/12/2020 17:37

I am northern, and not posh. However I do have a fancy job that usually requires a level of travel.

There is a dress code that I'm not very good at reading for my London based contemporaries. Think Meg and Julia in Motherland types.

What brands do these types wear? I can spot a Mulberry handbag at ten paces usually but the rest is baffling and I'm genuinely intrigued. They always look so well dressed!

Please help me, I can't ask in real life!

As PP said 6 figures in London doesn’t mean much... my DH on the same. We have 2 DC in private school and a London mortgage so I am not in a position to blow a grand on a handbag either.

I do agree that 6 figures doesn't go so far in London but it also depends on age & when you got on the ladder. And 2 6fig salaries would easily allow for £££ handbags but not if you're playing school fees.

Sophie Stanbury has the look some London women aspire too but I don't think it's what you picture when you think of London fashion/style.

Yes but it’s not the look that this thread is about. A previous poster has labelled the no Sophie Stanbury look as Sophie hate!

She has look I’m sure it’s the look some women want

But just because people are saying it’s not the look this thread is about doesn’t equal “Sophie hate”

jillypill · 30/12/2020 17:10

Oh yes I agree

Brillenbar47 · 30/12/2020 19:53

Small British heritage brand for leather bags - tusting - like this one www.tusting.co.uk/product/kimbolton/

I have a couple - exceptional quality and really lovely to deal with x

mena51 · 30/12/2020 21:59

OP please don't buy a Longchamp, they scream basic (no offence, I have a couple of them too) and they rub against silk and cashmere causing damage. Avoid Zara, a lot of it looks cheap up close. Focus on tailoring and good materials, but keep it simple and most importantly comfortable.

CaveMum · 30/12/2020 22:12

@notwavingbutdrowning5 thanks for the heads up on the cashmere - I’m in the look out to invest in a few basic pieces so will watch the sale with interest!

MrsDeadlock · 30/12/2020 22:14

Those Tusting bags are lovely. I'm past the Longchamp phase now.

The two brands I keep going back to are Mulberry and Ally Capello. I love them both.

I'm very close to purchasing this Ally bag www.allycapellino.co.uk/products/lloyd-waxed-cotton-bucket-bag-in-sand

The Mulberry Millie is gorgeous, but I may have to wait a while for that.

Having mulled it over a while, I think I prefer the bags that are made in Britain, with natural or recycled fabrics.

The Cambridge Satchel Co have their sale on at the moment if you’re looking for good quality British-made bags.

caperplips · 30/12/2020 22:56

I vote for ally Cappellino & have ordered the blue leather tote linked on this thread
G0 for it OP!

mammmamia · 31/12/2020 10:19

I’m going to order the oxblood Ally Cappellio. Such a sheep Blush

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 31/12/2020 13:38

studiobfashion.com/ Check this place out, some unusual stuff

Garby · 31/12/2020 17:04

For what’s it’s worth, according to this thread I’m very nouveau and gauche but then so is my colleague (financial services) who’s a Lady - she even (shock horror) uses an ostentatious handbag daily! Each to their own style wise and I don’t think there’s any one size fits all look.

I still miss the Banana republic on Cheapside, got some real gems from there. Second the PP who suggested Joseph though, I still wear a decade old white wool coat, although it does mean avoiding the red wine

SeaRabbit · 31/12/2020 17:17

I agree about Joseph: their trousers in particular are brilliant. I still wear, and love, a pair that's 10 years old. I also like Agnès B, and Paul Smith.

Next time you're in London (& we're back to normal) OP, why not take half a day and go to Marylebone High Street, as many of the brands that have been mentioned like Sandro and Theory as well as Agnes & Paul have shops there?

MrZogsSexWax · 31/12/2020 21:32

Can you machine wash Joseph trousers? I’ve been put off because the ones I like are always dry clean only.

This sounds like a wonderful idea, thank you for the tip. I will!

I have just purchased this Ally Capellino bag www.allycapellino.co.uk/products/saarf-travel-and-cycle-tote-in-black

I've spent days on that website looking at various options, and was very close to ordering about 5 others, including the powder blue and of blood leather totes mentioned previously. Size got me in the end. Would have preferred it in the waxed cotton or a different colour, but it's a very safe transition for me to start with.

Lovely bag OP - well wear!
It's a new year & a new style start too. I'm so glad you started this thread as I've had some amazing introductions to new brands / designers & styles.

viewsoftheshard · 01/01/2021 13:28

I’m loving all these suggestions, I used to work at Canary Wharf in Financial Services (WFH now) I really like me+em, the H&M stable of Cos, Arket, &other stories). Mango can also be good. Had some nice jumpers (in sale) from Essential Antwerp. Also found some nice stuff in Wolf & Badger. For more formal work wear I had a few dresses from The Fold as well.

slipperyeel · 01/01/2021 14:14

@HundredMilesAnHour - no spend January not off to a good start, just ordered the (gorgeous) oxblood bag you linked Blush

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/01/2021 15:41

@slipperyeel sorry!!!! (maybe not sorry)

Actually it makes me really happy to read so many on here liked my Ally Capellino recommendation. It's been a shit week/month/year and I am really struggling (I'm alone) so the positive messages on here have really cheered me up. Happy shopping everyone!

hitsvilleuk · 01/01/2021 20:06

Theory have a decent online sale at the minute - that said I'm sure almost all those named have as well!

mammmamia · 01/01/2021 20:33

I also have some really good items from Mango but the quality is shocking!

@HundredMilesAnHour sorry to hear you are struggling. You’re never along on MN! And thank you again for the recommendation. I ordered it too Blush

mammmamia · 01/01/2021 20:34

Alone that should have said

slipperyeel · 01/01/2021 20:46

We should all wave when we see someone else carrying an Ally bag on the tube Grin

caperplips · 01/01/2021 20:48

I'll add my thanks to @HunderedMilesAnHour too as I've ordered not just the bag but boots too thanks to the recommendations!! Cannot wait for them to arrive. I'll def give a wave to anyone I we with bag or boots!
