What the hell can I do with my hair?

Please excuse the terrible selfie, stern and lighting - don’t think I’ve ever taken a selfie before on purpose 😂 Have NC so it’s not linked to my other posts but hello if you know me!

Just paid out for a haircut earlier this week and yet again I hate it. No matter what I think of when I go in, I leave with the same haircut. I’ve had a very stressful year and suddenly look very old and feel like this haircut makes me look even older.

Please tell me what would suit me, o wise ones? I’ve just washed it and dried it, I hate it and will now wear my hair up until my next hair cut when the cycle will start again.

My hair is quite wavy if left to dry naturally. Would love something I don’t have to do much to, but not sure that’s possible with my hair. I want something more interesting than the same boring layers.

I think it looks nice but would possibly consider going shorter, more to chin length. I'm quite similar in my hair texture is awkward and I worry about looking manly but have found a shorter look looks younger as I age

Anon22 · 19/12/2020 19:21

I always used to end up with this cut, like a grown out "Rachel"

I now have it cut just below collarbone length without any layering so the ends are heavy and not wispy, makes my hair look in better condition. Hairdresser thins it out when it's dry.
He told me that I needed to keep the corners (the bits of hair which sort of go in front of your ears) when having the front shaped and that's made a huge difference.

I love that picture @HarrietPotterska

Mixingitall · 19/12/2020 19:21

You look lovely.

I am a similar age with long thick hair, this is what most hairdressers think looks best to take the weight out.

I have been very specific in the last couple of years and it’s worked! I have long layers, I request that they keep my corners in (so no layered feathering around my face) and have lovely long bangs that fade in.

I agree, go for something just about your shoulders. The same sort of length as your shortest layers. Perhaps then ask for long layers, so the layers fall between your chin and shoulders.

My hair is this kind of length and its the easiest to manage. Its a good length to curl and straighten and I can still tie it back.

BeTheHokeyMan · 19/12/2020 19:32

I think the cut is lovely and really suits you but I agree about the colour I think it washes you out. Maybe some highlights or lowlights to brighten it up ?

bellagogosdead · 19/12/2020 19:40

I think it's always important to go to the hairdresser with a clear idea of what you want done. If you leave it to the hairdresser they will most likely play very safe or have ideas about what a woman of your age/size should have done.
Imagine going into a shop and having the assistant chose an outfit for you- lord knows what they would put me in.Shock

SelfieNameChange · 19/12/2020 19:40

Yes, it’s definitely a bloody Rachel, and I had a Rachel the first time round. My name is also Rachel, perhaps they subconsciously choose it for that reason 😂

Okay so, shorter (will fry shoulder length first I guess and work my way up) - would definitely like to a blunt ending for once rather than so many layers. And maybe some kind of fringe. And colour.

Okay... will give it a go!

It doesn't look like you just had your hair cut. Which is good, because you can go somewhere else and get it done again!

You'd look good with it shorter and a few highlights to lift the shade.

Tell the hairdresser exactly what you've said here. Have a proper consultation and insist on something different.

SelfieNameChange · 19/12/2020 20:58

I don’t think it ever looks like I’ve just had my hair cut as I don’t have a hairstyle.... just hair. Thank you all - I am determined to have interesting hair next year!

Can you style it like this?

SelfieNameChange · 19/12/2020 21:57

I think mine needs more fringeyness to do that, and maybe l need to experiment with different products.

Colour! Get some depth in it, warm caramel with a dark rich brown would be amazing.
I'm hopeless on the 'cut' - as I'm just sporting some long shaggy mess at the moment- but I love colour and my last adventure with it was purple ends! Colour is so versatile and quick to have done, and can change your whole look.

This would suit your fab bone structure:

I think a shag cut (like the one of the woman with grey hair) would look good.

With a fringe, you need to think about how curly your hair goes when it's short. What's wavy at length can be frizzy when much shorter, especially in the summer months. How much you're prepared to style your hair should also factor into consideration of a fringe.

TryingnottobeWaynettaSlob · 20/12/2020 09:00

I think your hair looks gorgeous as it is!! I would love hair like that!
If you are fancying a change I think some darker caramel highlights like a balliyage (sp?!) would look great go add texture. I like the natural waves you have too if thats there because you were wearing it up then took down maybe try to recreate it with tongs?

Neverbeme · 20/12/2020 09:21

I always end up with a variation on that cut. I didn’t know it was dated as pps have said!

The alternative for me is a shoulder length blunt cut bob but I find that hard to manage with sticky up bits.

Could you style your differently eg more shaggy? Definitely try some colour.

Quads4x4 · 20/12/2020 09:26

Go auburn and get a deep side fringe, keep the length, use cantu deep hair mask with a plastic cap and leave for 2 to 4 hours.

Quads4x4 · 20/12/2020 09:28

Dont worry about the fringe in summer its december now and by then it will have grown out plus bobby pins..i have frizzy wavey hair and managed a fringe fine. It will mame you look younger and your cheek bones and eyes will pop.

ivykaty44 · 20/12/2020 09:38

therighthairstyles.com/hairstyles-for-big-foreheads/

have a look through these at fringes

regular trim for the fringe would be good to keep the hair in tip top condition

olive oil masks - literally just olive oil and wrap in cling film then leave on for a few hours, wash out is easy in the shower and leaves the scalp in great condition to. This is very inexpensive and due to that is very overlooked as it isn't going to make anyone lots of money. Apply to dry hair not wet.

ivykaty44 · 20/12/2020 09:47

I can understand you being terrified of short hair - but actually it would really suit you - I didn't suggest it as many are frightened

you have a slim face which is long and it would - with the right cut enhance your face and glasses look fab with a short cut

so much easier to manage and keep in great condition as its cut every 2 months

with some colour pulled through it would really make you trendy

long side sweep fringe on short cut would also be good

SelfieNameChange · 20/12/2020 10:01

I think this might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me 😂

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. My hair was always straight but is getting easier when left to dry, but once I apply heat or a brush it basically falls out, so I don’t think a fringe would be a problem from that POV.

Will try some different hair masques - feels very soft at the moment but obviously still looks dry. Then it gets greasy quickly.

I think I’m going to wait until the shortest layer gets a bit longer and then I can try a shorter cut with fewer layers and a fringe. Maybe I’ll get braver with shorter cuts over time!

I don't know you either Grin. I think if you're really unhappy with the way it looks, you've got nothing to lose chucking some colour on and if you're still not happy, go for a more radical cut. What's the worse that can happen - you hate it? Well you don't like it now so no worse off and however much I dislike someone's cut/colour, I always^^ admire the bravery to do something I probably wouldn't. Beside, Fuck it, you're not exactly going out anywhere at the moment Grin

Username642243 · 20/12/2020 10:12

God I'd kill for your hair

CorianderQueen · 20/12/2020 10:25

The cut is nice, it's the colour that's boring
