Have you had porcelain veneers done?

If so, what do the temporary ones before the final appointment look like?

Because of my dentist’s availability, they’ve moved my last appointment to one month after the temporary ones are fitted.

I don’t know if I should move the first appointment closer to the second one.

I’ll still be wearing a mask outside, so that helps, but I don’t want my husband to freak out each time I smile...

Thanks!

I had the front two teeth done. They were fine tbh. I think you have to be a bit more careful with what you eat in case they come off but they looked ok.

I seem to remember there was a period after they filed the teeth but before the temporary veneers where they didn’t look great but they weren’t little spikes like Katie Price’s were this week.

TimeQuest01 · 18/12/2020 12:51

Thanks!

Hopefully Katie and I don’t share the same dentist, hers look too white and fake...

I had temporary ones for a few months as they had trouble colour matching my permanent ones, the first temp ones they used were more yellow than my natural teeth, I then had them replaced with a different temp set for my wedding, the second set looked exactly the same as my permanent set!

TimeQuest01 · 18/12/2020 13:31

@Rosesarere, wow, that sounds great.
Thanks a lot, I feel better now.

Be careful of staining the temps.
I ate Bolognese and had an orange grid for three weeks.

Kimberley8284 · 18/12/2020 13:34

My friend who is a dental nurse said my first temp set is what they normally use but only comes in one colour hence why it didn't really match, it was fine no one reslly noticed apart from me, the second temp set were made from what they bond with so have different shades,

Yonifellover · 18/12/2020 13:35

Dont forget to take before & after photos Smile

TimeQuest01 · 18/12/2020 13:56

Thanks everyone, I can’t wait to have them done.

I’ve always had dark teeth because I was given tetracycline when I was a baby, so it’s going to be a great improvement (I hope!)

I had the front two teeth done.

@Neverbeme can I ask how much you paid for two teeth? I know it will vary by area and dental practice, but that's all I want - my two front teeth and I have no idea what £ to even aim to save. Thanks.

Plonque · 18/12/2020 16:16

That first bit should have been in quotes, I haven't had anything done yet!

upsidedownroundabout · 18/12/2020 16:19

Listening with interest as I'm thinking of veneers but so far have been put off by the filing aspect 😳

Neverbeme · 18/12/2020 16:39

I had mine done about twenty years ago but when one split last year and I had to have it replaced it was £500 which I believe is about the going rate, maybe more.

TimeQuest01 · 18/12/2020 16:58

@upsidedownroundabout, from what I’ve been told, they don’t file them that much any more.
They use ultra thin veneers that don’t require that much prep.
I’ve been quoted much more than £500, but this is in Fulham.

To echo others, be careful what you eat while you have the temporaries as curry and some tomato-based sauces will stain. I was very conscious of my temporaries but not a single person noticed them. I guess others don't really pay all that attention. I had the temporaries in for two weeks.

Regarding colour of the veneers, it's actually the 'glue' that gives them their colour, and you can choose what you want. I have 6 veneers on six of my upper front teeth. I did not want stupidly white teeth and went for something a shade or two whiter than my actual teeth. They look incredibly nature and no-one has ever clicked I have veneers. Five of my teeth has minimal filing, but one did have quite a bit due to positioning and the fact I opted for veneers in lieu of a brace to fix the position of one tooth. Mine where done 4-5 years ago, and if memory serves, were around £800 each tooth. Best money I ever spent!

The dentist who did mine retired last year and my new dentist complimented me on the great work I had done which was really validating.

Good luck OP!

I think Katie Price's are tiny spikes because she's had numerous sets of veneers, and each time they are removed, they need to file a little of the tooth.

@StellaRockafella, thanks for your advice.

I definitely don’t want them too white! The before and afters on my dentist’s Instagram look great and I have lots of faith in her, but I’ll definitely stress I want a ‘natural’ white.

I actually got composite fillings a year ago, cheaper option, she calls it the shellac of teeth, but they’ve gotten darker already, they’re porous, unlike the porcelain, and now I’ve decided to treat myself to the longer lasting option.

My price per tooth is very similar to yours.

I had the front four done in 2003, or thereabouts. I had temporary ones for two weeks. If you want to know what those looked like, do a search for the comedian Dick Emery when he dressed as a Vicar.

I'm so excited for you. Please be sure to update when you're out the other side!

One thing I must add is that I found the temporaries really uncomfortable to wear, I felt like I was constantly catching my lip on them, and they were a little rough. I thought I would mention this in case you find them as disagreeable as I did. But, they might be better now as a few years have passed, and besides, the results will be worth a little irritation for a few weeks.

The pic was taken shortly after the veneers were fitted!

SunnySomer · 18/12/2020 18:28

Just be aware - the person who was asking about cost - they do break after a time. I have a crown and a veneer on my two front teeth due to breakages in my teens. They break every 10-15 years, and it’s about £1,000 every time I have to replace the pair.

TimeQuest01 · 18/12/2020 19:02

@StellaRockafella, they look super real, you must have been so pleased.

Oh, I’ll bear in mind the getting used to them.

@SunnySomer, I know, I feel like the moment I step out of the dentist office I have to start saving up for when they need replacing in 10 years time...

I feel they’re making so much progress though, I hope in the future they’ll become more mainstream and affordable.

@Thankssomuch, just googled him, seriously? That made me laugh.

Actually, they now make crowns made of zirconia and they're supposed to be indestructible. Am actually having one fitted in the new year instead of the standard type.

@TimeQuest01 Yes, am seriously thrilled with them, my only regret is that I did not take the plunge sooner!

It’s actually sad, I think, to see those filed down real teeth. The finished look is false - as false as the plastic teeth in a tumbler cartoons - and too uniform. No way would I ever go that to my real teeth.

Janegrey333 · 18/12/2020 20:44

...do that...
