Have you had porcelain veneers done?

If so, what do the temporary ones before the final appointment look like?

Because of my dentist’s availability, they’ve moved my last appointment to one month after the temporary ones are fitted.

I don’t know if I should move the first appointment closer to the second one.

I’ll still be wearing a mask outside, so that helps, but I don’t want my husband to freak out each time I smile...

Thanks!

Composites are far better for your actual teeth. Done well they can look lovely.

@Janegrey333 I don't think that's true. They look very natural nowadays if done well.

Composite is good but isn't suitable for lots of cases and breaks off more easily.

danni0509 · 18/12/2020 21:17

@Janegrey333 obviously if you have ok to start with then yes.

But some of us don’t have that pleasure unfortunately.

There are many who do opt for the ridiculously fake looking glow in the dark super white teeth, but most people don't. Also, most dentists will advise against having super white overtly fake looking teeth.

It's worth noting that Katie Price and various other reality tv stars have their veneers done overseas, usually in Turkey where the work is cheap and the dentists are more likely to indulge the customer their desires to have large white and very fake looking teeth. Any decent dentist in the UK will not do likewise.

Hi. Think I had the temporary ones for a couple of weeks. I was warned to be wary of red wine and staining from similar foods and drinks. I had no problems and they looked vastly better than my original teeth and very similar to the veneers which were fitted afterwards. This was done 14 years ago and they are still fab.

TimeQuest01 · 18/12/2020 21:27

@Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel, the problem for me is that since my teeth are dark because of the tetracycline, i was told I would never get the same white finish as someone with white teeth.
She was honest about it and it was my choice to not go straight into porcelain veneers.
For me to have a white composite finish,
She would have had to add an opaque layer underneath and it would have made my teeth look too big (or she would have had to file them a lot).

I’ve been happy until now. I just feel I’m ready to move to the next level.

This is what my teeth looked like the first day of composite filling.

They’re not as bright anymore.

I had my veneers done 27 years ago and still have the original ones. Your photo looks lovely, I hope you re as pleased with the porcelain ones .

StellaRockafella · 18/12/2020 22:18

OP, I think the composite ones are great and natural looking, so am really intrigued to see what your porcelain ones will look like.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 18/12/2020 22:39

@TimeQuest01 I think your teeth are lovely Smile

TimeQuest01 · 19/12/2020 07:07

Thanks guys.

They look a bit greyer now, I think composite is a great, cheaper option for people with natural white teeth that need some contouring on just a few teeth.

You l need to research the difference between crowns and veneers. Veneers do not need temporaries as only a tiny piece of tooth removed. The pegs shaped teeth are crown preps which do need temporaries. I would be wary of getting treatment from a dentist who hasn't explained this. A veneer is always the best first option as it's the most conservative approach.

This is not entirely true. As mentioned up thread, I had 6 veneers fitted. I had to wear temporaries as the filing down makes the tooth more sensitive. Once the filing has been done, moulds are taken so the veneers can be designed, and then temporaries are fitted to protect the filed teeth. I had the work done over two appointments which is the norm for veneers, indeed, the OP is having her work done over two session.

Crowns are used for a myriad of things, not just for aesthetic reasons - I have a broken molar that is being rebuilt with a crown. This will be my second crown, the first crown I had was not filed down to a peg, and had a temporary fixed onto the filed tooth while the crown was being made.

Katie p has crowns fitted not veneers hence the pegs !! My dentist in Turkey is amazing..refuses to do whitening as damage the gums etc and does superb work at low prices using German and Swiss materials which are much better quality than UK stuff...she has many patients from Germany and Scandinavia !
