If you have long hair...

How often do you wash/blow dry/straighten it?
For the first time in my life I have reasonably long hair.. bra strap length. It's also thick, wavy and sadly at the front.. a bit frizzy... any rain or damp and POOF it's huge!

I've always washed mine every other night, and dried and straightened it but I'm trying to be kinder to it now it's long but don't like the thought of leaving it any longer than two days. I have to dry it or it's says damp for 24 hours!

Other than blasting it with Batiste on day two how do I keep it feeling nice for an extra day?

I have long hair. I try to avoid the straighteners unless I am going somewhere special. I wash it and let it dry naturally and then just before it dries completely - I blow dry it just to tame it.

I don't have greasy hair so I can leave mine for up to a week before washing it, but I normally wash it twice a week. I don't think you need to wash it every day. Mine always looks better on the second day anyway.

Ginfilledcats · 02/12/2020 19:58

Long, thick, coarse, frizzy, was-curly-now-frizzywaves-as-I've-used-too-much-heat-on-it hair. I was once a week with a boat load of conditioner, and don't use any other products.

I style my hair differently every day so think ponies, plaits, buns, curled, straightening, so gets a fair amount of touch but I've washed it weekly for as long as I can remember so it's used to it's I could probably get to 10 days before it gets grease but I don't like to

SadSecretSanta · 02/12/2020 20:02

I wash mine every morning. It’s dead straight so I don’t need to do anything with it. I use the Dream Lengths conditioner.

FatGirlShrinking · 02/12/2020 20:28

Mines just above bra strap length.

I wash it twice a week. Used to do it every day but I dye my hair and it was getting really damaged and faded.

I started washing every other day then reduced down to twice a week.

It's quite fine but lots of it and very straight, I use kids 2 in 1 shampoo, no separate conditioner. I like L'Oréal kids sweet almond and cherry shampoo the best as it smells like bakewell tart and makes my hair very shiny and soft.

This is what it looks like on day 3 and I don't think it looks dirty or greasy at all.

I wash mine twice a week and leave it it to dry naturally. if I do anything else it will frizz. I never straighten my hair as it doesn't stay put.

CommanderBurnham · 02/12/2020 20:33

I can get away with mine once a week but wash twice weekly.

Once a week I dry it with the dyson air wrap brush which gets it straight but not ironed straight iyswim, the other time I let it dry naturally.

I only condition the ends. If I condition nearer the scalp it gets greasy a lot quicker.

The dyson does cut down the drying time. About 10 mins from soaking wet to styled and ready go. I have thick bra strap length hair.

MaizeBlouse · 02/12/2020 20:35

Mine is properly long (waist length when down) but deffo needs a cut. I air dry my wavy hair, which gets greasy quite quickly, mainly due to having 2 very small children and no time! But recently I've been favoring this sort of side french plait thing. So plaited around my face and then down the side. Also a half up half down low pony. But I prefer undone styles.

You need to push through so it gets used to being washed less. Just put it up on day 3? I do a Dutch braid on the top half. I've got no hair skills, it's the only thing I can do on my own head!

plumpootle · 02/12/2020 20:45

Dyson air wrap. It's horribly expensive but it works and is kind to hair. At school pick up today a mum asked me how I had been to hairdressers given lockdown. But I hadn't - hadn't even washed it for a week.

PatsyJStone · 02/12/2020 20:46

Long hair, curly, v thick, lots of it, not greasy, wash once a week. Just got a Remington styler, big brush and dryer in one. Give it 8/10 for being easier than holding hair brush and dryer separately. Dried it at night then straightened over it the next morning.

I couldn’t wash mine every other day it takes hours to dry naturally and not a chance I’d spend that time three times a week drying it.

JorisBonson · 02/12/2020 20:47

Mine is nipple length and baby fine - I have to wash it every day! Lockdown has been great because I've been a home so much I can just bung it in a bun if I'm not going anywhere.

I spend a fortune on treatments and trims.

PirateCatQueen · 02/12/2020 20:50

I wash mine twice a week. Let it air dry. It’s quite bushy and wavy til it gets past a certain length, then the weight kind of straightens it out. I find condition-wash-condition also helps tame the frizz a lot.

Used to wash either every day or every second day, it took a while to adjust to being washed less often but it sorted itself out after a few weeks during the first lockdown.

User258544 · 02/12/2020 20:50

Once a week but its dry brittle and extremely thick. When I was in the office I would do a once a week fringe only wash with shampoo and conditioner. I used a blow dryer every day on the fringe and sometimes a quick go over with straighteners. I would start the week down then half up then fully up.

User258544 · 02/12/2020 20:52

I also bought the most powerful hairdryer I could find in terms of wattage. It cut maybe 2-3 mins off blowdrying time.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 02/12/2020 20:52

I wash mine about once a week with a bar shampoo from Conchus, then I use cornflour (I kid you not) as a dry shampoo in between washes, because that's the kind of hippy I am Grin. I air dry it in warmer months, and hairdryer it in winter. I don't bother with straighteners these days as I find that ironed look dated, but then I don't have frizz problems anyway. The problem I do get is that my hair loves to tangle itself for fun if I leave it loose, although this has been better since I stopped using styling products and standard shampoo. I will probably chop it off and donate it sometime next year.

StillMedusa · 02/12/2020 20:58

Thank you for your replies.. it seems like powering through is the way forward! My hair doesn't look grim but it feels it to me. I also think it feels worse if I've used heat protector spray so may ditch that. I do plait it before bed to stop it tangling. I've just never had properly long hair before so wasn't sure what was best (and now am too old for it according to my mother Grin)

@GertrudeKerfuffle I need to recommend little blue hen shampoo bars 😁

93daisy · 02/12/2020 21:05

Dry shampoo is one of my go to products if Im honest as my hair is thick and very long so takes forever to dry, I also find that if I curl rather than straighten it needs washed less frequently.

hilariousnamehere · 02/12/2020 21:10

Definitely push through till it gets used to it. Mine's waist length and vivid brights, and I used to wash it every day. Then got some decent pH balanced shampoo, and now go 2-3 days between washes, but it took a few weeks for my hair to stop panicking and getting super greasy on day 2 and 3. I only use dry shampoo if I'm going out because I hate the way it feels on my scalp Blush but it's very effective!

MiniTheMinx · 02/12/2020 21:17

Waist length (thanks lockdown) thick coarse wavy hair. I wash it twice a week, or roughly every 5 days if I'm being lazy. I hate washing it, its boring and takes an age to dry. Its too long to blow dry it into any sort of style. It seems to behave better if I ties it up in a loose bun for the first day when still damp. Then it dries completely and looses some of the frizz. It doesn't get greasy.

I was told by a hairdresser years ago that to make my hair softer to blow dry it and blow dry from the roots, as the heat makes the scalp produce oil. So, on that basis it might be that washing and drying with a hairdryer might make your hair greasy at the roots, but dry or damage the ends.

formerbabe · 02/12/2020 21:22

Twice a week...my hair is very thick and takes ages to dry and straighten.

AurorasLighthouse · 02/12/2020 21:26

Twice a week. I comb it with conditioner in as part of washing it, rinse that out. Then I towel dry, brush, use a second towel to pat it dry again. I sometimes let it air dry, sometimes rough dry with hairdryer, sometimes put some curlers in or plait it loosely. I try to only heat treat once in each hair cycle IYSWIM so one half of the week I don't blow dry, straighten or curling tongs/wand at all. I try to avoid straighteners now, use them on a lower heat and only about once a month or my ends get really damaged.

ShalomToYouJackie · 02/12/2020 21:33

Mine covers my bra straps. I wash every my hair every other day, it's really curly but also frizzy and takes hours to air dry so blow dry with Babyliss air styler 1000 I think it's called. Takes no time at all

Audreyseyebrows · 02/12/2020 21:39

I used to wash mine daily and struggled at first to do it less. It didn’t look dirty but felt it.
I’ve managed to get to twice weekly. I don’t use any heat or products and when I wash it I have a really decent shampoo and conditioner. On day 3 I sometimes use dry shampoo or put it up.

MrDarcysMa · 02/12/2020 21:55

I have very long naturally wavy (sometimes frizzy) hair.
I Used to wash blow dry and straighten it every day but now I try to push it to every 3 ... and as long as I blow dry and style the very front bit to make it frame my face better, it looks ok if I leave the rest to dry naturally.
Your hairdresser should be able to cut it into a style that looks good without being heat styled.
