Not rich / expensive (although those threads are a great read).

But that more intangible serene class / grace / elegance?

*stooped

Janegrey333 · 30/11/2020 13:11

Teresa May has the height and figure to look classic and also wore some lovely outfits but always looked like a badly wrapped parcel in my opinion because she stopped and shuffled around.

I think Theresa May felt too tall hence the stoop.

@PigsInHeaven

There's a serious stealth boast, *@Bluntness100* -- looking elegant while queueing for the loo on a longhaul flight! But as we have established elsewhere, you are in fact Minnie Driver. Grin
It’s not even a stealth boast. It couldn’t be more blatant.

Good manners and kind actions.

questionn · 30/11/2020 14:47

I’m 5ft and a bit dumpy currently and I’m afraid that I do think at least average height and slenderness are depressingly key to looking classy or classic.

I don't think you need to be tall or slim to look classy or classic. I just think if referring to elegance a certain gracefulness is implied. That is what I associate with tall & slim.

Lol at the bitchy comments,,😂

questionn · 30/11/2020 14:54

I'm tall & have good posture (used to model), however I'm not elegant at all. I'm the girl with the hole in her sock & lunch on her top!

I think I have a good sense of style though I'm just not particularly elegant or a classic dresser.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/11/2020 14:55

I actually don't think you can tell until you speak with a person and look into their eyes. It's either there or it isn't, and a haircut or coat won't confer it.

Elegance and style are different - those can be studied and deliberately learned.

questionn · 30/11/2020 14:55

Ahh come on @Bluntness100 you would be the first to react to a post like that from someone else. You're pretty infamous!

Babyyodasmacarons · 30/11/2020 14:57

And also dressing appropriately so no cleavage on display

🙄

questionn · 30/11/2020 15:00

Grace Kelly was very elegant & serene.

instanthistoryy · 30/11/2020 15:05

Good posture, tidy nails, minimal makeup, no roots/big highlights in hair, wears well cut and good quality fabrics even if just joggers.

Iamthewombat · 30/11/2020 15:24

Three pages in and nobody has segued into telling us that rich people wear ancient scruffy clothes and drive around in ancient land rovers encrusted with dog hair! What is happening to Mumsnet???

@Bluntness100

Some of your own remarks are quite “bitchy” by all accounts. Perhaps posters have learnt from your example. In any case, I feel it is only fair to define the type of cringeworthy boast you put out there for all to see.

That’s an urban myth. Mumsnet posters have done much to promote it.Smile

I don't have a cleavage to display Sad

I think the camel coat is town wear for some but I would happily wear one in the country too. It’s classic, after all, and it can be dressed up or down.

They don't look very classy with mud splashed up the back. Even the country lanes are muddy right now from the farm vehicles, and the footpaths and fields are best negotiated in waterproof trousers, wellies and waterproof jacket. Not elegent in the least, but practical.

It is very muddy round here right now.

Are camel coats available in other colours other than the unflattering (for me) shade of beige?

WannaBBetter · 30/11/2020 17:59

Ironed clothes
Fitting clothes
Clean Clothes, lack of pet hair
Tidy and washed hair
Clean shoes and bag
But most importantly, genuine listening skills more so than talking. No heavy makeup if any at all.

MitziK · 30/11/2020 18:07

@Flaxmeadow

tall & willowy help with achieving elegance

Willowy is great when you're young but as we age, too much willowy tends to make the face look a bit haggard. Long scraggly hair the same.

A nice haircut is always classy. But a good haircut is not so easy to find these days, when so many hairdressers only seem to concentrate on dyes, extensions etc

Posture, clean lines, clean hair, minimal make up. Well groomed. Appropriate clothes for the weather, but not too revealing in summer. Basic classic clothes styles that will always be in fashion but with a good silk scarf, belt or earrings

Liam Gallagher once said that good shoes are the most important part of an outfit, then pants and then the top. I think there's probably some truth in that

Um...I'm not taking style advice from somebody who was most recognisable for looking like he'd dressed from a bin bag dumped outside a charity shop before having a fight with a sheep shearer.
JaneJeffer · 30/11/2020 18:57

That's not a fair description of Liam. He always looked very cool.
As you were.

MitziK · 30/11/2020 19:01

He always looked as though he needed to go home to his Mum's, have a bath after tea and listen when she said 'if the wind changes direction, your face will get stuck like that'.
