What to use on DD’s tangly hair?

Littlemiss74 · 26/11/2020 20:29

My dd is 8 and here hair is always tangly even after using shampoo & conditioner. It is medium length just past shoulders and quite thick. I have two sizes of tangle teezer brush and have bought several detangling sprays from supermarket but it is still so hard to get a brush through.
Can anyone recommend anything that will help please? I don’t mind spending a bit more than i have done so long as it works!

Denman or kent paddle brush. Actually the Primark paddle brushes arent too bad (but wouldn't have done when i was a teen/child). The rest are no where near as good. Bin the tangle teezers.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/11/2020 20:36

And this for getting it back in check here. not the detangling spray specifically the mouse on wet hair if really tangled

Comb very gently with a wide-tooth comb when the hair is dry then wash it. Wash the hair in the direction of the hair not sort of mussing it up.
Dry the hair by patting it not ruffling it .
Comb again with wide-tooth comb..

Wash once a week at most, wash with conditioner like a cream rinse between washes. Rinse then smooth 50p worth of conditioner through wet hair, squeeze dry and brush through when wet. It should be better when dry.

Wide toothed combs ShockShockShock

Brings back none too pleasent memories of me hiding under the sofa to escape.

MikeUniformMike · 26/11/2020 21:14

I mean an afro comb.
You need to comb very carefully.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/11/2020 21:20

Yeah i remember them. Their ok for middling tangly hair, but if you can't do it with a tangle teezer either an afro comb or a detangling comb will hurt. Lots

fruitypancake · 26/11/2020 21:21

Have you got a tangle teezer specifically for wet hair? I found that really helps

BessieSurtees · 26/11/2020 21:25

Always start from the bottom, deal with the tangles lower down and work your way up the hair in sections.

Have you tried combing it while the conditioner is still in and then rinsing it?

MikeUniformMike · 26/11/2020 21:33

Maybe my hair is medium tangly. I usually plait it to avoid tangling.
A brush does nothing and I didn't get on with the tangle teezer.

As a child the hair brush, one with hard bristles, was a torture instrument.

BashfulClam · 26/11/2020 21:39

At bedtime brush her hair then plait. I have very fine tangly hair and this used ti be the best way to stop the morning torture. My mum are as cruel and just started to brush from the top of my head and use brute force to get through the knots. I’d be in tears and she’d be roaring at me to stand still...not good memories. Now I brush my hair before washing, reverse condition it and use Aussie miracle oil when drying.

GooseberryTart · 26/11/2020 21:41

Try a tangle Teezer or something called a wet brush and some spray conditioner detangling spray.

SlothWithACloth · 26/11/2020 21:44

I use oil in dds before she washes it. I brush it through, hair is then washed and conditioned and brushed again. It stays soft til the next wash.
I always brush and plait it at bedtime so it’s quick and easy the next morning.

MikeUniformMike · 26/11/2020 21:47

That's my memory too BashfulClam.

40weekswithno2 · 26/11/2020 21:47

Are you giving it a good brush before washing it? Then use a wide toothed comb to comb the conditioner through her hair before rinsing. Comb from the ends and work you way up an inch at a time.

ShakespearesSisters · 26/11/2020 21:48

My daughter gets really knotty hair. I bought some Mane n' tail detailer from amazon. Not cheap but lasts ages. It doesn't make my daughters hair greasy even if I use it every day. They also do shampoo and conditioner. Its great stuff.
Then I comb out with a fake tangle teaser that was £1.99 from body care. I actually find it better than the one I spent £10 on in boots.

40weekswithno2 · 26/11/2020 21:48

Yes to a plait at night. I used to get one in my hair every bedtime - I still sometimes put one in.

Ifonlyicouldliveinmypjs · 26/11/2020 21:50

I have really tangly hair and have spent a fortune on different brands of leave in conditioner. The only one I have found that really works well without leaving a nasty residue is the Palmers coconut oil leave in conditioning spray. It’s a fiver in Superdrug and it’s amazing!!

Revlon leave in conditioner at Amazon

This stuff is amazing, honestly! Read the reviews but I can personally say this is the only thing you will ever need.

beargryllshasabigrope · 26/11/2020 21:52

Have you thought about trying the curly girl method?

PontiacBandit · 26/11/2020 22:08

I use the tangle teezer when the conditioner is on the hair.

Anothertiredmother · 26/11/2020 22:09

Tangle teaser

RainbowMum11 · 26/11/2020 22:12

Don't use tangle teasers
Use a wide tooth comb - put loads of conditioner on when wet and comb it through before rinsing
When combing, start from the bottom and work through and up in sections

RainbowMum11 · 26/11/2020 22:13

My daughters hair is a similar length, thick & curly too

pistolknight · 26/11/2020 22:22

Don't use shampoo only conditioner via the curly girl method and spray https://www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Conditioners/Leave-In-Conditioner/Palmer%27s-Coconut-Oil-Formula-Leave-In-Conditioner-250ml/p/422400?gclid=Cj0KCQiAwf39BRCCARIsALXWETzxehxD07ZjOoujkeQvs4kVJ5KSOaTy3Iin7bXJqkTNSXKHO2ufHsaAjZiEALww_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds palmers leave in coconut oil after. It completely stops tangles
