What to use on DD’s tangly hair?

My dd is 8 and here hair is always tangly even after using shampoo & conditioner. It is medium length just past shoulders and quite thick. I have two sizes of tangle teezer brush and have bought several detangling sprays from supermarket but it is still so hard to get a brush through.
Can anyone recommend anything that will help please? I don’t mind spending a bit more than i have done so long as it works!

My DM has always struggled with her hair and tried literally everything. She came across this (just a fiver!) and it's changed her life.

My hair was always manageable until I hit my 30s and came off hormonal contraception. It suddenly became a tangled mess overnight. Once after an illness when I didn't get out of bed or brush my hair for a few days, I had an actual matt at the back Blush Stuck a bit of the above product in and it actually came out without any bother (or losing any hair!). Amazing stuff, truly.

Recently discovered argan oil in lidl for dd's hair and it has been amazing. She doesn't have curly hair, it's fine but lots of it and it gets knotty just looking at it but one squirt if the oil worked through wet hair keeps it brushable for a while week.

My littlest DD (age 4) has curly, knotty to the point of matting hair - we wash and then condition and brush the conditioner through with a tangle teezer brush; then rinse; we use Wet hair (it’s a brand) hairbrush. We use anything I have handy - elvive oil, dove hair oil, some kind of spray on Silvakrin stuff for £1, I think I’ve even put a little bit of conditioning hair mask on after washing to smooth things out. Whatever I use it’s still a mess in the morning but a water spray and wet hair hair brush seems to tame it. We alternate shampoo wash & conditioner with just conditioner ‘washes’.

You might need to stop brushing. I realised it left my daughters hair more tangled and matted the next day. I wet comb it with loads of conditioner when it’s washed then every morning just spray conditioner onto my hands and run through any tangles with my fingers.

I know someone who has long curly hair and she says she's never brushed or combed her hair, just uses her fingers.

LimpidPools · 26/11/2020 23:04

I've always found that detangling sprays make my hair more knotty and difficult. I don't know why and I know it sounds ridiculous.

Leave in conditioner is where it's at. And tangle teezer/ wide toothed comb while wet and with the conditioner still in. Overnight plaiting also v good.

Voice0fReason · 26/11/2020 23:11

Please no combs! Not wide-tooth or afro, just no combs!
Very painful memories.
A comb can never be as gentle as a brush because the teeth pull at the knots with no give at all.

Separate into small sections. The more tangled it is, the smaller the sections need to be. Gently brush from the bottom, don't pull. As parts loosen, separate them from the section. Make sure you are holding the section above where you are brushing so you are protecting the hair from pulling at the scalp.

Curly girl method. Only brush it when it's wet and use leave in conditioner.

Gertruude · 26/11/2020 23:17

My DDs hair is super tangly - I tried the girl girl method as that's what I do with my own hair but didn't work for her, it just because dreaded. I use this stuff Avon Naturals Kids hair Tamer/detangling spray x 200ml https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00R6B7ZC2/ref=cmswwrcppapifabt11_7AdWFb7BAFDNS

It's so good I use it on my own hair too now

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2020 14:14

Voice, I'd say no brush. A brush either skims the surface of mine or rips it out. Probably best to try both and use the one that suits you.

I admit that I am very fussy which comb I use, and start about an inch from the ends combing gently downwards, then start about an inch further up etc.

QualityFeet · 27/11/2020 17:40

Everyone in my home growing up was curly and fine and knotty. Ultimately we didn’t wash but we conditioned in a curly girl way and never brushed. Brushing makes it worse as it stretches and damages the hair. Tease it out with fingers, Afro comb it the most. Other wise leave it alone!

Bananaman123 · 27/11/2020 21:46

Wet brush rather than tangle teezer

Martinisarebetterdirty · 28/11/2020 09:26

Mine has fine straight tangly hair - we use olaplex 3 once a fortnight (once a week if in summer and swimming) and it is much better.

Sunshiney1981 · 28/11/2020 10:01

Do you need to brush it? Not all hair needs brushing. ‘Tangled’ hair is usually curly/wavy.

My thick curly hair is I guess ‘tangled’ but it’s also a mane of thick glossy curls.
The only time I put a brush near it is after a shower when I put in leave in conditioner and curl cream.
I’d scream with pain if you tried to brush my hair dry.
