First time make up for 12 year old

BabylovesJohnny · 14/11/2020 04:13

She’s just asked for some for her birthday next week. I’m pretty old fashioned but I know plenty of 12 year olds have it ... it’s just I always thought my daughter was behind her peers when it comes to all things trendy 🤣 It’s going to be a steep learning curve !

I have three questions:

  1. do you have any make up brands you would recommend for this age group (read cheap but good! )

  2. are there any you tubers you would advise for me to send her way for tips and how to do it?

  3. what would you recommend with regards to ‘stock’? Eye liner? Foundation etc?

Any tips or advice VERY gratefully received.

  1. Morphe
  1. Honestly, no. I think YouTube influencers generally make you feel like you need 100 different products with OTT techniques for a 12 year old. But the popular ones are James Charles etc. I think Instagram reels/tiktock are more popular now though.
  1. Tinted moisturiser, mascara, tinted lip balm/lipstick. As that’s all I could get away with at school! Maybe a cheap blusher/highlighter/eyeshadow palette
IceFrost · 14/11/2020 04:52
  1. I would go for this for a teen. I have ALOT of make up and this is reasonably priced for the quality - www.revolutionbeauty.com/uk/en/home

Morphe is also a good brand though ^. I was just thinking cheaper as she’s 12.

  1. my daughter is 9 and watches james Charles. She likes him and thinks he’s funny.

  2. I would probably go with ...

*primer
*foundation
*concealer
*bronzer
*mascara
*eye liner (pencil or liquid)
*eye shadow pallet and some brushes
*foundation sponge

*some form of eyebrow pencil/powder etc if she starts doing her brows too but she may be too young.

That’s a pretty basic list of everything without buying high lighters, bake powders etc

  1. ELF, Revolution, W7

  1. Concealer, mascara, brows, maybe lip liner and eyeliner, and a few colour products to play with.

  1. Estée Lauder, Charlotte tilbury 2) Dominique Sachse

A lot of UK make up is tested on animals so you need to check what you buy if she’s concerned by animal welfare.

It’s all part of growing up, putting on make up & doing your hair.

Standrewsschool · 14/11/2020 08:45

Avon do a cheaper range. Even there normal range isn’t too badly priced.

Standrewsschool · 14/11/2020 08:45

Their, not there.

BabylovesJohnny · 14/11/2020 09:03

Thank you everyone - this is really helpful.

Don't discount the likes of Wilko. Their essence range of mascaras is damn good.

By the way, if she wants to experiment with eye shadows, I can recommend this book

www.amazon.co.uk/Eye-Candy-Makeup-Luscious-Lashes/dp/0823099695/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&s=books&keywords=Linda+Mason&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1605370082&sr=1-1

Use the link rather than typing Eye Candy or you will get to an entirely different range of books.

I bought this for myself years ago and my niece who absolutely looked the book. Not only are there good pictures in it she indicates what shades she used. My Niece spent ages in the mirror and would come in the room from time to time with a different eye on each time! So if she gets a multishadow palette from Revolution/MUA/ELF etc she will be well away!

My teenage daughter likes Morphe, kiko, benefit and too faced but when she started using foundation we actual went to a boots no 7 counter, they use a little camera thing to identify the right foundation shade and they do some lovely lightweight finish ones. They then have a concealer etc matched to each foundation shade. A lot of her friends have the tell tale orange tan line around the jaw line but hers always looks well matched to her skin tone so I’d definitely recommend. I believe boots are still open at the moment too.

IOwnDogsNotFrogs · 14/11/2020 18:00

DD uses BECCA foundation, Benefit for highlighter, James Charles eye palette, she likes the Chanel eyebrow pencil.
She has Morphe brushes.

My other DD has much cheaper tastes and isn’t really into make up as much, she uses Max Factor Second Skin foundation which is really easy to blend.

CharitySchmarity · 14/11/2020 19:11

Tinted moisturiser (Nivea is cheap and good), brown mascara, a palette of fun eyeshadow colours to experiment with.

Notarealmum · 15/11/2020 09:39

Unless she has problems with her skin she wants to cover up I wouldn’t encourage foundation. Tinted moisturiser at the most for fresh, young skin, I’d say.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 15/11/2020 10:01

Rimmel. Cheap but very good

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 15/11/2020 10:15

At 12 she won’t need primer/foundation/brows.

My DD is a similar age and uses lip gloss / eyeshadow occasionally, she has a blusher / blusher brush too. At this age it’s more about experimenting so an eyeshadow palette and some brushes is fine. How about getting her a cosmetics advent calendar aimed at the younger market? Then she gets a few mini versions of things to try?

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 15/11/2020 10:24

So maybe a set of brushes and a eye shadow palette /neutral gloss for her bday and something like this? www.superdrug.com/Make-Up/Beauty-Advent-Calendars/Revolution-Advent-Calendar/p/796606#bv-reviews

Bodyshop do make up too.

domesticslattern · 15/11/2020 10:26

She'll want Glossier. You could probably get away with just a blush and a mascara at this birthday.

Makeuplover · 15/11/2020 10:28

Best Teen Makeup: Estée Lauder double wear light and radiant concealer. No face powder, Charlotte tilbury instant look in a palette(has 3 eyeshadow colours a bronzer two blushers and a highlighter) Maybelline Great Lash .And some Urban decay Vice lip chemistry. (Plus Gimme Brow)

1940s · 15/11/2020 10:33

Elf!! Available from Superdrug and vegan and cruelty free

1940s · 15/11/2020 10:34

I'd also avoid foundation unless you think she is self conscious about her skin

jennie0412 · 15/11/2020 10:36

Elf is still my favourite and I've been using it since I was 10.
I would get her a concealer, bronzer, setting spray (setting powder can make you look too dry), mascara, highlighter, blush, lipgloss and eyebrow pencil.

This is the basics I would say. Foundation can look a bit cakey so I just put concealer under my eyes, a bit on my cheeks and over any spots and it evens it out well enough. Smile

bimbimbap · 15/11/2020 10:47

like @domesticslattern i came on to recommend glossier - it’s vegan, natural-looking and very instagrammable. the set containing tinted lip gloss, cheek stain and brow gel would be good - you pick the colors and it comes with a mini makeup bag (& sticker!)

ExplodingCarrots · 15/11/2020 11:19

Brands : Revolution Beauty, Morphe , BH Cosmetics, Beauty Bays own brand, Jessup brushes (get them off Amazon, they're a dupe for Zoeva brushes and are amazing).

You tubers : I don't like James Charles so I'd avoid him. I'd highly recommend Jamie Genevieve , makemeupmissa , raw beauty Kristi , Jaclyn hill, shaaanxo .

MrsJunglelow · 15/11/2020 12:34

I would only get eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, shadow and some lipstick.

And no way would I let her watch any youtube, most of them are absolutely caked in make up and it does not look good.

Changedmynameagain1 · 15/11/2020 12:40

www.elfcosmetics.co.uk/

As others have said ELf is really good and reasonably priced as well
