She’s just asked for some for her birthday next week. I’m pretty old fashioned but I know plenty of 12 year olds have it ... it’s just I always thought my daughter was behind her peers when it comes to all things trendy 🤣 It’s going to be a steep learning curve !

I have three questions:

  1. do you have any make up brands you would recommend for this age group (read cheap but good! )

  2. are there any you tubers you would advise for me to send her way for tips and how to do it?

  3. what would you recommend with regards to ‘stock’? Eye liner? Foundation etc?

Any tips or advice VERY gratefully received.

Aside from the make-up she'll need a good cleansing routine to take it off at the end ( not baby wipes !!)

Superdrug do a hotcloth cleanser with muslin cloths ( either Radience or the Vit E ) or if you're buying BodyShop Camomile Balm.
Quick and easy , get a few cloths so she always has a clean one

Watching the YouTube videoes and trying the lloks out in her bedroom will give her a practice and a laugh ( "As if people go out wearing this" )

100% Glossier

My 12 year old and her friends are all into Morphe, James Charles and Jeffree Star. Not particularly cheap though!

Yubaba · 15/11/2020 13:47

My 14 year old has a mix of morphe, sleek and revolution make up. I only let her have eye shadow, mascara, blush and some pale lip glosses.
She doesn’t need foundation or contour, she’s too young for heavy makeup.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 15/11/2020 15:00

They tend to spend hours doing their eye make you at that age so a good eye palette. If you're feeling generous then get the James Charles palette (Boots) or one from Revolution (Superdrug) also get mascara, lipgloss and a concealer.

This is amazing! I wasn’t expecting all of this. Thank you so much. I’ve picked up a few things for myself here too! 🤣

There's a lot packed in here for about the price of a single thing from Charlotte Tilbury. Wink

OP, make sure to ask your daughter what she wants too though. She probably has a list of stuff she likes that isn’t mentioned here.

No offence intended to anyone but if she really wants a James Charles eyeshadow palette, she will be a bit disappointed with random stuff from Elf or a Chanel eyeliner etc.

Anon22 · 15/11/2020 19:39

Some brushes, Superdrug have some Real Techniques sets, half price in their black friday offers.

Also the StylPro brush cleaning system is half price in Boots at the moment (I use cheap micellar water with mine, as the StylPro liquid is quite expensive).

would only get eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, shadow and some lipstick.

I'd probably add a blusher and concealer and skip the eyebrow pencil.

At that age, foundation isn't a good idea. Mascara is horrible stuff because the eyelashes are there for a reason - to keep stuff from your eyes. Slug eyebrows are hideous.

I'd second Essence and boots Natural Collection.

GooseberryTart · 15/11/2020 21:06

DD got her make up done at the Benefit counter at 12/13 the result was beautiful and natural looking and the lady was really helpful. I was going to buy her some mascara and a blusher but DH came with us and got carried away. She did a good job with her make up on her own about three or four times then totally fell out with the whole concept of make up and looking pretty and hasn’t touched it to this day almost 16.

MikeUniformMike · 15/11/2020 21:07

PP said ask her.

At that age, you want to be like your friends, so she will probably want the 'right brand' fortunately when I was in my teens M&S did affordable palettes in tins

At that age, and now, I wouldn't be that impressed by luxury brands - too mumsy.

WellTidy · 15/11/2020 21:32

Even when I was that age (30+ years ago), I wanted to have the same as my friends. At that age, it was palettes from m and s - eyeshadow palettes, blusher palettes and single lipsticks in various shades of brown.

I would get whatever brand she asked for, within budget.

I buy Estée Lauder, benefit etc make up, but I still really rate the MUA eyeshadow palettes from the MUA range in Superdrug which are generally £4 for 12 colours.

IOwnDogsNotFrogs · 15/11/2020 21:46

Eyebrow pencil isn’t always = slug eyebrows.
DD’s are really blonde and she has the lightest colour Chanel pencil to fill in any sparser bits and that’s it.
They are definitely not TOWIE-esque scary affairs.

helloxhristmas · 15/11/2020 21:47

@Makeuplover

1) Estée Lauder, Charlotte tilbury 2) Dominique Sachse
For a 12 year old?!? We're Superdrug own brand all the way!
PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 15/11/2020 22:05

Definitely ask her what brands she'd like as she'll probably want what her friends have or what she's seen online!

MikeUniformMike · 16/11/2020 13:11

Same as WellTidy. It was Body Shop for toiletries, but the M&S palettes in a tin were a must have. We didn't want Estee Lauder etc because they were for 'old' women (i.e. my mate's mum). The M&S tins were great - I remember the blusher very well. The little cardboard rouge pots from Bourjois in Woolies were very desirable too.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/11/2020 14:19

At 12 does she probably not watch this stuff on youtube anyway OP, or discusses it with friends who have at least? Presumably she has some idea of what she wants.

I would go on the superdrug website with her and go through the budget (but decent) brands like makeup revolution and discuss what it is she wants. I feel like she will have things in mind. Then see what you think is appropriate and find a middle ground. A lot of the suggestions above are for really expensive makeup that i don't even shell out for as an adult. I'd stick with Makeup Revolution, NYX, Rimmel and the like for now and focus on items like tinted lip balms, a mascara , an all around eyeshadow or blush palette, concealer, a clear brow gel and some brushes for the blush and eyeshadows.
