Please can someone help - chunky knit crisis

I will admit crisis is perhaps a tad dramatic......

I want a warm jumper. Not a fine knit, a chunky long jumper which looks ok on teams calls but helps me stay warm. Ideally teal or green but with a bit of colour anyway. Not crew neck but good with most other neck lines.

Easy you think. Pages of choice you think. Sadly not.

I am allergic to wool. I can bear a cashmere/cotton blend but that's generally fine knit. Most of my knitwear is fine knit cotton and I want something chunkier and warmer. I also can't abide acrylic - it squeaks and looks like a dish rag and isn't warm. So rock/hard place

I had thought of fully embracing the synthetic and going for a long baggy chenille type jumper but the only one I can find that is in stock and not cropped is out on my size (14/16)

Help please

Following, this is definitely a tricky thing to find!

funtimefrank · 08/11/2020 09:36

@TokyoSushi

I have just worked my way through Debenhams and Landsend have some long cable knit chunky cotton jumpers on there in quite a few colours. I am tempted to give it a whirl although I think will lack the cosy factor (previous cotton chunky knits have not been cosy)

Do you know anyone who knits? There are loads of brilliant patterns and yarn and a good knitter can usually adapt patterns too. It's pricey though, patterns and yarn can be really expensive depending on what you want.

wowfudge · 08/11/2020 09:58

I've got this from M&S in navy and it's lovely and warm. They have something very similar in lime too.

@wowfudge that looks like 4ply at the most. It's definitely not chunky!

SoupDragon · 08/11/2020 10:03

Have a look at Esprit: www.esprit.co.uk/womenswear/clothes/jumpers-cardigans/jumpers

I don't know if they have what you're looking for but they always seem to have a huge variety of styles etc.

InFlagranteDerelicto · 08/11/2020 10:04

OP - I agree with @GiveMyHeadPeaceffs, you'd be best finding someone who knits & either asking for it as a gift, or paying for it to be made. Do any relatives of yours knit?

wowfudge · 08/11/2020 10:07

It's a suggestion and I was only trying to help. If the OP is struggling to find something, it's worth looking at alternatives. It may not be chunky, but it is pretty long despite how it looks in the photo and it's warm.

MozzchopsThirty · 08/11/2020 10:10

I agree that jumper looks fine knit

Def not my idea of a long chunky knit

ChinDiaper · 08/11/2020 10:13

L L Bean have lots of 100% cotton chunky knits like this one

InFlagranteDerelicto · 08/11/2020 10:14

@wowfudge I wasn't criticising, just trying to help. I knit & I'm sure it is quite warm, I prefer natural fabrics myself. Hence the knitting - so many shop bought options these days are plastic type fabrics or too expensive. I just thought it looked quite a fine knit, rather than chunky. Lovely colour though.

Tissima · 08/11/2020 10:38

I am also looking for something like this, except in an 8/10. Everything is oversized at the moment which I can't bear. I want non-wool, chunky, not black or white or grey or pastel (Phase 8, looking at you here). And no 'embelishments' like buttons on sleeves or (wtf) zips.

Ellapaella · 08/11/2020 10:43

This one comes up on a search for a cotton jumper https://www.superdry.com/products?productid=4075156&source=googleshopping&locale=en-GB&nst=0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8ZvNs-Hy7AIVRxkGAB3jdgqHEAQYAyABEgKuDDDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

candycane222 · 08/11/2020 10:52

The landsend chunky cotton is pretty substantial - sent one back as I was after a light summer jersey and it really wasn't!

Also worth looking at mens jumpers to widen the choice, (though many brands do seem to streotype blokes into grey, navy and khaki, it's true...)

CushionsandCandles · 08/11/2020 11:04

I assume you've looked at Alpaca options?
Had a quick look and came up with this chunky cardigan.

@SoupDragon have just ordered two jumpers from Esprit who I have barely heard of and have never even looked at before, so thanks. (I won't hold it against you if I hate them!!) 30% off so they are definitely not breaking the bank.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2020 11:27

I have a lot of things from Esprit and most have been good. The fact that returns are free is a big bonus. They often give comments on the fit based on reviews advising whether to size up or down or if the fit is about right for the size.

Purpleblondelady · 08/11/2020 11:32

I've had one from Cotton Traders recently, not a cool brand but it is 100% cotton, plain and chunky. Came in loads of different colours I think. I think some of them are unisex so you might need to think about when choosing a size because they come in small, medium, large etc rather than 12, 14, 1 etc.

funtimefrank · 08/11/2020 13:50

Thank you for all these. I will work through. I sadly don't know any knitters - my granny was a wiz but sadly no longer with us.

I did wonder about alpaca. I do get irritated by prettty much everything but maybe worth an order to trial

Could you wear a polo neck under wool?

What fibres can you wear?

aliloandabanana · 08/11/2020 14:45

I'm not sure you'll get a chunky knit that isn't either wool or acrylic. I've spent ages looking for chunky knit jumpers and jumper dresses recently and most were acrylic, sometimes some wool which I have to avoid.

Tu have some better quality/softer acrylic jumpers and jumper dresses at the moment. They're never going to be great, but they're better than some of the other cheap brands.

Sasuma · 08/11/2020 15:15

I don’t buy wool, I’ve got a couple of cotton jumpers from Kowtow.

eu.kowtowclothing.com/collections/knitwear

They’re not all chunky and I’m not sure they’ll all cotton, but there are definitely a few options:
