Will we ever wear heels again?

Scrolling through some online shopping outlets at the minute, looking for some cozy winter jumpers, and i saw a photo of a model in nice jeans, said cozy jumper, and a pair of high heeled pumps ...and it just struck me as weird

I've been working from home since covid kicked in, and used to wear block heeled boots to the office, or wedge sandals, or t-bar pumps, but now obvisouly haven't worn anything like that since March .... and even (before current lockdown) when going out for dinner or whatever, i've pretty much only been wearing flats.

Something has kind of "clicked" with me, and I now look at heels and think "why on earth would wear I those" ..... comfort has now become my number 1 priority, and i can't imagine going back to heels, even if we return to the office at some point next year !

Anyone else feel the same ? Has working from home (for those who are doing it) permantly changed how you view footwear ? Is the high heel industry now doomed because of Covid ? Grin

At the moment loungewear and dressing for comfort is very fashionable. It's oh-so 2020 and work-from-home chic, which is an extension of the earlier craze for onesies and athleisure.

At some point people are going to get very bored of dressing in sweaters and tracksuit bottoms 24/7. Personally I think the whole style is lazy and uninspiring. I much prefer to make an effort with my clothes, and I miss wearing heels. Shockingly, I am perfectly capable of walking in them and do not have any bunions.

I’ve never been able to wear them to work (nurse) but wear them around the house. I live rurally so don’t really wear them out.
My heels are here to stay!

Circusoflove · 07/11/2020 22:02

You still see heels a lot on tv so the look hasn’t gone away. Tess and Claudia are in towering stilettos on strictly for instance. The problem is that if you don’t wear them regularly you won’t be able to walk in them so the idea of keeping them only for special occasions doesn’t really work.

Pikachubaby · 07/11/2020 22:24

I used to love wearing heels in the 90s, towering over men Grin (already over 6ft without heels)

But to me they now look dated

Somehow everything “flattering” is now “dated”, the challenge is to look cute in oversized boxy jumpers, baggy jeans and chunky shoes Grin

Well, that’s my interpretation of 2020 fashion anyway Wink

A well turned ankle in a high heeled pointy shoe, a fitted skirt, a nipped in waist, are all passé

But it’ll come back soon, I’m sure

I always found heels excruciatingly uncomfortable, so I'm glad they're a bit out of fashion!

FieldOverFence · 09/11/2020 09:04

I'm sure heels will come back aorund into fashion, like everything else, eventually, I suppose.

I do think the pandemic has changed me though, in terms of what I wear - and if they do some back in a few years, I'll be the dated old lady still wearing trainers/flats and refusing to see the light Grin

If you are the “dated old lady”, you’ll have a lot of company! Once comfortable feet have become a way of life there’s no going back. Whatever fashion does, there will be a huge swathe of women who will reject them.

DepuisToujours · 09/11/2020 13:22

Yeah, I think they will come back.

I've never been able to wear "proper" heels anyway. I'm tall and very top heavy, so it's just physics - the bigger the tree, the harder the fall Blush.

But, I saw Claudia Winkleman wearing some on Strictly last night and I thought she looked fantastic and stylish.

Generally though, I don't see big, stiletto heels, on anyone. I think because I've, (until recently), tended to live in big cities, where you have to walk a lot. The big, big heels wouldn't be practical in, for example, Edinburgh. Even people who are used to wearing them would surely fall over somewhere with big hills and cobblestones, I think.

TheClitterati · 09/11/2020 14:52

I've never worn heels, and am not about to start now.

But yes they abosolutely will "come back" . Once we are all back out in the world again "fashion" will be all about dumping the comfy (only it will be called dowdy/frumpy) and come back to the glamourous side. And all the people who like to follow fashion will do as they are told and start to wear heels again, even if they have really enjoyed not wearing them for a while.

Cathytotters · 14/11/2020 11:24

Have to be honest girls, I never realised heels went out of fashion 😉

Cathytotters · 14/11/2020 20:27

Oh and OMG I would kill for Tess’s heels tonight, simply fabulous!

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 14/11/2020 20:30

I am a teacher and have always only worn flats to school. Recently I bought a pair of chunky heeled boots and they are actually more comfortable than my flats. I don't think I'll ever be seen in a pair of stilettos again though.

Notarealmum · 15/11/2020 09:27

I doubt I will, sadly. I used to wear vintage pointy stilettos all the time in my youth and now have the bunions to show for it (though actually, I think it’s a genetic thing?). These days I’m grateful to the trend for flats (and flatforms!) but mourning my glorious collection of heels that haven’t seen a foot for years - can’t bring myself to let them go. And yes, like others, I’m sure they’ll be back in fashion, if they’re not already (there’s a fair few on Net A Porter, from where they never entirely went away).
