Will we ever wear heels again?

Scrolling through some online shopping outlets at the minute, looking for some cozy winter jumpers, and i saw a photo of a model in nice jeans, said cozy jumper, and a pair of high heeled pumps ...and it just struck me as weird

I've been working from home since covid kicked in, and used to wear block heeled boots to the office, or wedge sandals, or t-bar pumps, but now obvisouly haven't worn anything like that since March .... and even (before current lockdown) when going out for dinner or whatever, i've pretty much only been wearing flats.

Something has kind of "clicked" with me, and I now look at heels and think "why on earth would wear I those" ..... comfort has now become my number 1 priority, and i can't imagine going back to heels, even if we return to the office at some point next year !

Anyone else feel the same ? Has working from home (for those who are doing it) permantly changed how you view footwear ? Is the high heel industry now doomed because of Covid ? Grin

My feet are wincing at the thought of proper shoes and heels.

I haven’t worn anything other than slippers, trainers and flip flops since Feb.

MoltonSilver · 05/11/2020 14:06

I feel exactly the same. I don't think I'll ever go back to heels. They make no sense.

Sasuma · 05/11/2020 14:06

For me it’s not a Covid thing. I don’t wear heels generally, except for a couple of times a year for a wedding or similar. I never wore heels to work or for an evening out. I do live in London though and think generally things are quite casual - eg most women would be wearing flats and most of the bars/restaurants I (in normal times) go to. I’m also tall at 5 ft 10 which is probably relevant!

I do think Covid will speed things up though, as I imagine those many that were wearing heels to work etc will be reconsidering when offices start going back... I wonder whether people will generally be more causal at work too, if on a long term basis after Covid they’re going in less, WFH more etc it all might just feel a bit different.

Floisme · 05/11/2020 14:08

Personally no I won't, but then I've barely worn them in 40+ years and, even before Covid, had no intention of ever doing so again.

But if you mean, will they come around as a trend again then yes, I'm sure they will. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if they came back higher and deadlier than ever.

GuillermoVanHelsing · 05/11/2020 14:12

Not even heels for me- I've worn nothing but Skechers or my running trainers for over six months now. Last weekend I wore two different pairs of flat boots. OMG the pain in my knees on Mon/Tue was horrendous Shock

I'm destined to wear spongy soled shoes for the rest of my life. Not that I care much.

FieldOverFence · 05/11/2020 14:17

i think i may have got to the stage of giving up heals entirely eventually, but i think covid has speeded it up.

@Sasuma yeah i reckon when (if) we go back to the office, i won't go back to the dress/tights/boots i used to wear ....new uniform of skinny jeans, nice jumpers / flats !

Probably not, and I'm delighted.

SapphosRock · 05/11/2020 14:27

I hope not! Horrid, spiky, wobbly things. Give me a nice pair of trainers any day.

I used to admire women in the office who wore heels all day but now I'm much more impressed with women who don't.

MustardMitt · 05/11/2020 14:28

I haven’t worn heels for nearly five years after making a conscious decision not to, so I’m not intending on trying now!

Having said that, I’ve only worn trainers and slippers for the better part of a year now, the thought of leather shoes and boots is making me wince.

Same here, but it clicked about 20 years ago. Grin

grey12 · 05/11/2020 14:31

Agree!! I hardly ever wear heels and nothing above 1inch. But I do like my wedges to go out or something

ExConstance · 05/11/2020 15:29

I like heels! I wear them to the office as I have to go in every day. I have worn them at home when we have had pre-lockdown visitors and I will carry on wearing them unless they become ridiculously un-fashionable.
It is a bit of a skill to be able to walk normally in very high heels, and one I don't want to lose.

devildeepbluesea · 05/11/2020 15:31

Haven't worn spiky heels for years, thanks to my bunions. But a nice 2-3in block heel or even slightly thinner still do wonders for me as a stocky shortarse.

Feeling the love for trainers as everyday wear though...

LemonBreeland · 05/11/2020 15:33

I miss my heels and dressing for the office. I watch people on tv in their stiletto heels and feel sad at mine languishing in the cupboard. I do think my feet wouldn't thank me putting them on though.

MacDuffsMuff · 05/11/2020 17:00

I like heels. I don't wear them for work but I like them for going out.

lindyloo57 · 05/11/2020 17:06

I haven't worn heeled shoes for a few years, but I do wear a 2.5 inch block heeled ancle boot or knee high boots at 5 ft 3 inches i need the extra height.

Greenteandchives · 05/11/2020 17:08

I bloody love my heels. I keep them all in labelled boxes. I have loads of pairs, but must say I am wondering whether I’ll ever put them on again. Shame.

dudsville · 05/11/2020 17:12

I had already stopped wearing heels about a decade ago but I'm with you on the increased level of comfort that I will be sticking with! I've even learned how to dress without needing a bra, I'm lucky that I'm not large or pointy.

Wiredforsound · 06/11/2020 02:53

I think they have looked really dated and ‘try-hard’ for the last 5 years or so. I don’t know anyone who would be seen dead in a pair these days.

Monty27 · 06/11/2020 03:01

Heels are passé since the 80s imho ☺️

habibihabibi · 06/11/2020 05:15

I've noticed even a lot of brides wear flats now.and on my last trip to London, barely anyone was in heels for work
I would hate to tote up the amount of money I have spent on uncomfortable heels.
A few years ago I donated the designer ones to a charity auction for animal welfare .

MacDuffsMuff · 06/11/2020 06:07

Chunky heels were the height of fashion in the 90s. Unless you're just taking about stilettos, but there are many different kinds of heel which have been in fashion since the 80s.

Juancornetto · 06/11/2020 07:16

I live on a cobbled street Grin no heels for me. But I was scarred by seeing bunioned feet at the swimming pool when I was a kid so never been a big fan. I used to wear them a bit but hated how restrictive they were, made nights out less fun and I always felt a bit vulnerable in them

Cathytotters · 06/11/2020 12:59

I love my heels! Love the delicacy a lovely pair of heels
brings to the way I carry myself when wearing them. Don’t get the passe comments at all, never retro always classic!

GreekIslandTime · 06/11/2020 15:42

Heels can look very stylish. But I never wear them as too uncomfortable for me, and not really my particular style. But can be v attractive.

However, slight warning, I was in a shoeshop last year and the assistant commented on all the older ladies (no doubt affected by winklepicker and other style) who came in with badly mishappened feet, bunions etc. I think she was saying it was due to the shoes they'd worn.

My feet are lovely and I'm 60 Grin.
