Cold people: how do you keep warm WFH

Anothernamebitesthedust · 03/11/2020 22:20

So I am ALWAYS cold and unhappily it’s just getting worse as I get older. My house is not a warm house and my desk is right by a massive draughty window. (Can’t do anything about the, unfortunately.) I’ve got a little oil radiator which helps but still, I’m sometimes so cold I’m shivering.

So I’m after some tips on what to wear to keep me warm while I work. I’m on Teams most of the day and fairly senior so I do need to look presentable, but not super smart. (M

Obviously I wear a vest every day but it’s not enough. What should I wear?

Hot water bottle in your lap?

ethelredonagoodday · 03/11/2020 22:23

I have a fleece blanket on my knee!!!

Titsinknicks · 03/11/2020 22:25

A vest, long sleeve top, thin jumper and then thicker jumper. Natural materials. Acrylic does fuck all. Blanket on lap. Fancy scarf for presentability and more warmth. Good socks. Warm lippers.

MonkeysandParrots · 03/11/2020 22:26

Bottom half, thick socks, fleecy trousers/joggers & a blanket.
Top half, layers ... vest, jumper, colourful pashmina and cashmere cardigan.
Hot drink in insulated cup.
Small heater in room as last resort.

MerryGrinchmas1 · 03/11/2020 22:27

I live in my dressing gown. Put it on over my clothes, thermal socks with trousers tucked in and lots of tea!

MerryGrinchmas1 · 03/11/2020 22:28

Maybe just throw the dressing gown to the side when on a video call 🤣

Calphurnia · 03/11/2020 22:29

Layers!

Long socks
Legwarmers
Hot water bottle
Long sleeve vest
Wrist warmers

Get up & stretch to get the blood going

Chillichutney1 · 03/11/2020 22:29

Thermal vest, thermal long sleeved top and cashmere jumper. Fingerless gloves to enable typing. Thermal leggings under trousers (or brushed cotton pyjamas!). Warm house boots/boot slippers.

Hot water bottle on your lap as a pp suggested,
you’ll be baking after all that (in a good way)!

I do find keeping feet and hands/wrists warm seems to keep the rest of me warm

justgeton · 03/11/2020 22:31

About the draughty window... years ago we used something by sellotape (i think) to draught proof a window. Basically a clear plastic stuck to the frame and 'shrunk to fit' using a hair dryer. It was bloody brilliant!

Maybe worth a look on amazon?

justgeton · 03/11/2020 22:33

Just had a look... search for 'temporary double glazing ' on amazon

ArthurShelbysTash · 03/11/2020 22:35

Electric heated throw. Game changer!

Microwave slippers. Keeps feet warm. I find that even with multiple layers I am cold unless the environment around me is warm.

Mouseylu · 03/11/2020 22:39

Heated body warmer

DorisDaisyMay · 03/11/2020 22:40

I have had a hot water bottle and a quilted coat on all day. It is miserable but at least I am not cold!

ArthurShelbysTash · 03/11/2020 22:44

I have bought an electric throw especially for WFH. I didn't want to heat the whole house just for me and I get so cold sat at my desk. I have to say it is a total game changer.
I do have to go and find it most mornings though. It has usually made its way to another room. Everyone loves it!

Bingowin · 03/11/2020 23:16

Wrist warmers do seem to make a massive difference.

GroundAlmonds · 03/11/2020 23:19

Skirting board shaped electric panel heater in the footwell of the desk, Blanket folded on the floor in front of it (to rest feet on), fingerless thermal gloves, and layered clothing.

Titsinknicks · 03/11/2020 23:23

Can someone please recommend a heated throw?

Mellonsprite · 04/11/2020 00:01

Is your vest thermal? I make sure my feet are warm as if they go cold the rest of me does too- so thick socks and very big fluffy slippers. I’m actually going to be on the look out for ankle length bootee style slippers next.
Also a scarf to trap heat in, and a body warmer from M&S. I’m looking at wrist warmers too.
Re draught proofing the front door made a massive difference too.

stayathomer · 04/11/2020 00:03

Tea, tea and more tea and when you can get moving as much as you can, sitting and huddling (as I do most of the time) makes you colder

CrystalTits · 04/11/2020 00:05

@Titsinknicks this is the one I have. It’s brilliant. I just keep it over my knees and no-one is any the wiser!

Window film & insulation tape- draught proofing is the priority here- go around and check where other cold blasts might be getting through and stuff the holes up with filler or even blu tac (white tac might look less obvious)

A heated throw is excellent for sitting still but doesn't transfer the heat up and down the body..warm feet is a must and fingerless gloves / wrist warmers are great too.

MrsApplepants · 04/11/2020 00:08

Electric foot warmer. As long as my feet are warm, the rest of me is too.

laudemio · 04/11/2020 00:08

Run up and down the stairs to get circulation going, eat protein with carbs.
Cosy sheepskin boots, cashmere wrap, smart gilet, fingerless gloves. Take gilet off for calls.
Gallons of tea, hot water bottle
