Cold people: how do you keep warm WFH

So I am ALWAYS cold and unhappily it’s just getting worse as I get older. My house is not a warm house and my desk is right by a massive draughty window. (Can’t do anything about the, unfortunately.) I’ve got a little oil radiator which helps but still, I’m sometimes so cold I’m shivering.

So I’m after some tips on what to wear to keep me warm while I work. I’m on Teams most of the day and fairly senior so I do need to look presentable, but not super smart. (M

Obviously I wear a vest every day but it’s not enough. What should I wear?

I really can't recommend this product enough. I don't wear it on my body, I put it against the chair or sofa cushion instead. I always feel the cold, and this is such a helpful product. I got mine from Lidl.

There was a helpful thread on this subject within the last month or two. You may find some useful suggestions there too OP.

Layers - 2 vests and 2 jumpers. 2 pairs of socks. A smart scarf makes a big difference. You can buy a heated blanket type thing to put over your lap. Fingerless gloves?

Mellonsprite · 04/11/2020 15:20

Honestly, just put your heater on 🤷🏻‍♀️

A lot of people don’t have unlimited money to pay extra gas & electric bill though! Also it’s a massive waste to heat my entire house all day when I’m only sat in 1 small room all day.

If you are always cold please go and see GP. I am in the middle of really stressful and invasive testing because my “always cold” turned into cancer markers and signs of bowel disease.

Not to scare you all but please take care.

Tape up the gaps round the window. I have sash windows and they let in so much cold, but in the winter i have to put stuff round the gaps. Its a rented house so not much else I can do.

Also make sure youre always wearing a thermal vest. The extra warm M&S ones are the best that are brushed on the inside. Get a size bigger.
sheepskin slippers. hat, wrist warmers, gilet.

I have a wearable blanket which has been a revelation and a game changer worn over my house clothes. Has a hood and a huge pocket in the front which is surprisingly handy. Have just bought another one so I always have a clean one ready to wear. I also have a pair turtle doves and a nice pair of winter socks as well and I'm nice and toasty. Am now able to turn heating off while indoors.

EatPrayYoga · 04/11/2020 16:05

I often have the heating on and use it to dry laundry as well

Sometimes I put a hoodie on other times a jumper but I find I get very warm in a jumper for some reason

emmylousings · 04/11/2020 16:07

I really suffer from the cold whilst WFH and the 2 things which work for me are hot water bottle on lap and chunky socks over normal ones. Both nice cheap solutions too! In December / Jan I might also have a pair of leggings under trousers... (baggy trackies).

Cuddling57 · 04/11/2020 16:27

I second the m and a extra thermal range. I've bought the beats this year too. So thermal m and a vest, m and s long sleeve thermal top plus jumper. I have done nice jumpers so these are ok for work. Scarves definitely help too. I like the big thick ones so they double up as a blanket for your legs!
What floor are your feet resting on? If it's not a carpet get one of those carpet squares or a Matt as cold floor = cold feet for me no matter what socks or slippers I have on!
I'm looking into getting the wrist warmers and heater blankets too!

Cuddling57 · 04/11/2020 16:27

Oh yes covered hot water bottle too!

MiddlesexGirl · 04/11/2020 16:29

If not putting the heating on then heated blankets etc. aren't really the way to go.
Layer up with thermals. Then a polo neck smart jumper on top with a jacket and jewellery will make you sufficiently business like.
Bottom half - thermals, winter jogging bottoms, walking trousers, that kind of thing.
Thick socks. Fluffy slippers. Blanket. Put the blanket under as well as over.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 04/11/2020 16:39

I bought these recently and am thrilled at how much of a difference they make to my warm levels!

Cuddling57 · 04/11/2020 18:24

@EveryoneRevealsThemselves what did you buy?

eurochick · 04/11/2020 19:34

I use some nice wraps over whatever I am wearing. If my neck and shoulders are warm the rest of me is generally ok. I have some nice ones as I used to use them in the set-for-a-comfortable-temperature-for-the-men office before lockdown. If you are on video calls a lot they are a bit more stylish than some of the other suggestions.
