Cold people: how do you keep warm WFH

Anothernamebitesthedust · 03/11/2020 22:22

So I am ALWAYS cold and unhappily it’s just getting worse as I get older. My house is not a warm house and my desk is right by a massive draughty window. (Can’t do anything about the, unfortunately.) I’ve got a little oil radiator which helps but still, I’m sometimes so cold I’m shivering.

So I’m after some tips on what to wear to keep me warm while I work. I’m on Teams most of the day and fairly senior so I do need to look presentable, but not super smart. (M

Obviously I wear a vest every day but it’s not enough. What should I wear?

Merino wool long sleeved under layer, top, woollen jumper. Tights under trousers. Thermal socks. Hot water bottle on lap or behind back. Hot drinks.

Also get your iron checked. I warmed up a lot after a course of iron tablets.

Thermal underclothes, sheepskin slipper booties. Get a small electric heater as they’re a lot better at getting you properly warm. Wear a towelling bathrobe/dressing gown when you’re not in meetings.

Rest a blanket over your legs?

This could also do the trick for you:

My office is in the worst part of the house, it's cold in the winter and boiling in the summer so I really feel your pain.

Recently I've been really cold and have taken to wearing a thermal top (Uniqlo heattech) underneath a thick jumper, if I'm really cold I'll wear a scarf as well. On my lower half i have a thick blanket, slippers and a hot water bottle (none of which can be seen)

Sitt · 03/11/2020 22:29

Plug in heated blanket over your bottom half. You can adjust the temperature as needed

Waterdropsdown · 03/11/2020 22:29

Look at Uniqlo extra warm heat tech (I think that’s the phrase) layers. You can wear them under smarter clothes but they really are the warmest.

Maranello4 · 03/11/2020 22:29

I wear lots of layers, vest underneath is standard atm underneath a smart shirt or top. I also have a small hot water bottle which gets used a lot.

QueenPaws · 03/11/2020 22:31

Heated throw on my lap
Sit on a (meant for cats) heat reflecting pad

gnushoes · 03/11/2020 22:32

I'm a veteran WFH person. Hot water bottle, fingerless gloves and sit in a sleeping bag up to your waist. One of those frumpy plug in double slippers is marvellous too. Good luck!

NC4Now · 03/11/2020 22:34

Hot water bottle on your lap or behind your back

Lots of layers
Keep your feet warm!
I wear ugg boots with cashmere socks
Merino or cashmere jumper with cashmere cardigan on top

VintageTeaRose · 03/11/2020 23:21

Slipper boots. Sheepskin are good but TBH the fleecy fake fur ones from Tesco are just as good for warmth. (I know people think sweaty feet but I've got both types and never had sweaty feet in either, plus the fleecy ones can be thrown into the wool wash easily).

Also a big fleecy cardigan. I'd say dressing gown for off-screen but personally I'd never get anything done work-wise in a dressing gown! And a cosy scarf to keep drafts off neck.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 04/11/2020 18:11

I wear a thermal top under a jumper, big thick thermal socks, slippers and I have a big dressing gown I wear when I'm really cold. I have also contemplated using a hot water bottle as well.

grassisjeweled · 04/11/2020 18:13

Fake fire on Netflix

Actually warms you up just looking at it

PantsandBoots · 04/11/2020 18:17

Another vote for heated throw - cheap to run and soooo toasty Smile

silentpool · 04/11/2020 18:17

Blanket under you and on top of you.
Thermal top.
Fleece leggings.
Slippers.
Heating goes on for portions of the day but I'm not really cold with the above measures.

BIWI · 04/11/2020 18:18

Hot water bottle under your feet.

muckandnettles · 04/11/2020 18:21

I don't know if your hands are on display in the meetings, but I have fingerless cashmere gloves which keep my hands nice and warm as I find sitting at a laptop my feet and hands get so cold.

blackcat86 · 04/11/2020 18:26

I have a plain onesie that looks like a nice hoodie on the top half. I am always cold and it's perfect for keeping me warm

Bathroom12345 · 04/11/2020 18:30

Heated throw. They are approx £45-£80 They make SUCH a difference. Cheap to run as others have said.

Bathroom12345 · 04/11/2020 18:34

You would think a cosy dressing gown would do it wouldnt you but it doesnt. God knows why. I love getting into my dressing down at 1830!

pinknsparkly · 04/11/2020 18:37

This doesn't answer your question about clothing, but where does the draft come from? If it is coming through gaps around the window then stuff the gaps with loo roll. When I was a child, our house had single glazed sash windows. Come autumn, we'd all go round stuffing the gaps with loo roll and then in spring we'd pull it all our again to be able to open the windows (and invariably end up with half a rolls worth of paper blowing down the street when we did open the windows!!)
