Cold people: how do you keep warm WFH

Anothernamebitesthedust · 03/11/2020 22:22

So I am ALWAYS cold and unhappily it’s just getting worse as I get older. My house is not a warm house and my desk is right by a massive draughty window. (Can’t do anything about the, unfortunately.) I’ve got a little oil radiator which helps but still, I’m sometimes so cold I’m shivering.

So I’m after some tips on what to wear to keep me warm while I work. I’m on Teams most of the day and fairly senior so I do need to look presentable, but not super smart. (M

Obviously I wear a vest every day but it’s not enough. What should I wear?

Put the central heating on?

BestIsWest · 04/11/2020 18:47

The best thing I have is one of these www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-cashmere-snood/light-grey/p5087329
And a blanket over my knees and sheepskin slippers with thermal socks

bugaboo218 · 04/11/2020 19:04

OP I also have a cold home office and to stop feeling cold I brought a pair of pure wool slippers, they really keep my feet toasty warm.

I also wear thermal base layers under clean pj bottoms or lounge wear and a 'scruffs' sweatshirt or old tee_shirt with a wool cardigan and fingerless gloves

If I am being seen I wear smarter wool or cashmere jumpers, so I can keep warm, but still look professional.

IMO there isn't anything more comfy than sitting at your desk at home working wearing lounge wear or pj bottoms. Great not having to wear work wear all day.

The electric fleece throw. Worth every penny and can be used on the sofa later too. So cheap to run. Don't know why everyone doesn't have one!

Eckhart · 06/11/2020 15:41

I wrap a blanket round me like you would a towel when you get out of the bath, you know when you wrap it round itself and tuck the top in? You could lower it to waist height for meetings. Works a treat.

Jroseforever · 06/11/2020 15:42

One word

Merino

chipsandpeas · 06/11/2020 15:45

my plan as i dont want/like the heating on all day (house gets too stuffy and pointless when i have a dog that wants out all the time)
thermal longsleeved tshirts
longsleeve tops
sometimes hoodie
sometimes jumper
furry leggins from primark
normal leggings with joggers on top

warm dressing gown
blanket
fingerless gloves
hot water bottle
ugg style boots
furry socks
scarf (when its really cold)

Eckhart · 06/11/2020 15:49

Ooh, and a hat makes a huge difference.

TollgateDebs · 06/11/2020 16:22

I work in the coldest corner of our home, so was feeling the cold. I have a work-at-home uniform now of black yoga pants (from ASDA, brill price and quality), chenille tops in a variety of colours (again ASDA) and for feet I've just bought a pair of BOBS, from Sketchers. These are my second pair, the first pair lasted two years and I junked them gardening (don't ask!). They have an outdoor sole with a knitted top and faux sheepskin. They are very toasty and comfortable.

Nacreous · 06/11/2020 16:28

I wear a vest and then a long sleeved thermal top, then whatever I'm wearing, then an actual wool/cashmere cardigan or jumper. Thermal leggings. Thick socks, sheepskin slippers. Old wool coat over my knees.

That keeps me warm and is smart enough for WFH meetings - at the office I would wear a jacket but there's a different vibe from home I think.

I then have wrist warmers and a scarf for in between if it's cold, and really do try to get up and go downstairs empty the dishwasher, put the kettle on every hour as a bit of movement warms you up a lot. It doesn't happen, especially when I have zillions of meetings but every little helps.

gower4 · 06/11/2020 16:30

I go for a 30 minute run first thing, my body feels warmed up all day after that.

Nat6999 · 06/11/2020 16:59

Keep your feet warm, I am always cold & have just bought some ugg boot slippers from Next, since buying them, I'm not as cold. Also have you thought of wearing a Gillet? Keeping your body warm will stop you feeling cold & a gillet will allow you to still be able to move unrestricted.

Anothernamebitesthedust · 06/11/2020 17:24

Thank you - I couldn’t find this and thought it hadn’t posted, so this is a marvellous surprise. Just off your google vested throws as a starting point. And invest in some decent knitwear I guess.

To whoever asked: It would cost a fortune to run the heating to warm a quite big (draughty, cold, can’t do much about it rental) house all day - Occasionally I crack but mostly that only goes on when the DCs get home.

I am the same. I have UGG slippers and will get proper wool socks (knitting them atm), I wear merino and cashmere. I have merino trousers - they made all the difference.

Heating does nothing to my room :( I have cashmere wrist warmers too.
And a hot water bootle.

Mollscroll · 06/11/2020 20:54

I bought a heated fleece blanket to go over my knees. Much less energy than heating the whole house but keeps me really warm.

I think warm people don’t understand that adding more clothes doesn’t necessarily make you feel warmer. It makes you a cold person in lots of clothes. I don’t seem to generate enough heat myself to keep me comfortably warm regardless of how much insulation I’m wearing. I need heat actively added to me in the form of central heating or my electric blanket. It’s been my best lockdown buy.

EllysMom · 15/11/2020 17:45

Cheaper alternative... do 100 jumping jacks every hour. Will only take a minute and will help you warm yourself up without having to buy blankets. 😀 Of course, it’ll do wonders for your health and mental wellbeing at the same time! Bonus.

Spinningdot · 15/11/2020 17:53

have you had your thyroid checked?

charlieclown · 15/11/2020 17:56

heated throw here.
i have a smart corporate top half and a nice snuggly bottom half

Scarby9 · 15/11/2020 18:03

Top half - vest, long sleeved thin thermal top, long sleeved tunic/ top, either jumper or cardigan (for Zoom sessions) and big men's knitted jacket for between calls.
Bottom half - M&S thermal leggings then either jeans or jogging bottoms. Thin bamboo socks them thick woollen socks and fur lined bootie slippers with proper sole.
Add hot water bottle on knee or up jumper and a coffee to wrap hands round and fingerless gloves and wool blanket when things get really bad.
Hot bath at lunchtime if necessary.

Inexpertjuggler · 15/11/2020 18:12

I have an amazing heated mat I have my feet on. It has a foot switch, and is like a doormat. I paid £10 for it from Lidl. The only snag is I have to fight the cat for space on it. It’s 60w, so costs pennies a day to run.

purringpaws · 15/11/2020 18:23

Uniqlo extra warm heat tech top and bottoms
Uniqlo thermal socks.
Jeans
Slipper boots
Hot water bottle
Blanket wrapped around bottom half
Scarf around my neck
Wrist warmers

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 15/11/2020 18:32

I find it hard to create my own warmth sometimes and am often chilly. My boyfriend bought me a heated gilet, I was sceptical.. not any more! I love it. Like gently leaning against a radiator or having a hot water bottle close.

Look up 'heated under vest women' - total game changer!

goody2shooz · 15/11/2020 19:44

Cashmere jumper, little silk scarf, (as well as your long sleeved vest!), velvet plush leggings from Primark are SO warm, sheepskin ankle boots (or higher). Heated blanket (from Lakeland) over your legs. Sit on a folded blanket and ensure no draughty as much as you can. Definitely cashmere, those leggings and the sheepskin boots - I used to live in Scotland in a COLD house and these were game changers!

kennycat · 15/11/2020 20:14

I'm also always cold so I'm watching this with interest.
I'd suggest putting a hot water bottle on a pillow then your feet on that (in many pairs of socks obv). And get up frequently to perhaps run on the spot or something. A brisk walk round the block in the morning and afternoon may also help if you can squeeze it in.
I have just read someone mention a heated throw. Now that sounds flipping amazing. Good luck fellow coldie. xx

Honicori13 · 15/11/2020 21:45

Well i have bought a heated gillet but u can get the vest too, I’ve just purchased the heated gloves too (can be used fingerless or covered) but u can also get the heated socks too, I’m a freezer I sleep in my fleece pjs or onesie with a dressing gown, socks and slipper boots 🤣 I also work on the fresh/freezer dept so I know who u feel
