Does anyone else mainly buy clothing at Charity Shops and via Ebay?

I can afford to buy things at retail price these days but I just can't bring myself to when I get so many amazing things for such low prices at charity shops and on Ebay. I recently bought a Topshop blouse in a BHF shop. The blouse was new with tags and the original tag said £29, whilst I paid £2.50! Such a bargain!

Other great things I've bought recently have been a Maxmara white shirt for £3, Current Elliott jeans with a leather stripe down the side for £2.50, Seven for all Mankind jeans for £3, and brand new UGG boots for £15! I've been on Ebay today and just won a few Topshop items for 99p each.

Does anyone else mainly buy secondhand and what have been your best buys?

I do, mainly because I can't justify the price tag on new garments such a "woolly" synthetic jumpers. That and the landfill issues.

I found 5 alpaca, cotton and wool jumpers from topshop, gap and M&S last week. All great quality, wash well and £20 all in.

With ebay, its good if you know exactly what you are looking for and I do buy a lot from there.

freezedriedromance · 27/10/2020 15:35

I do the same.
I've got money to buy (within reason) plenty of retail priced clothes but I can't bring myself to.
Gymshark leggings for £2.37, retail at just under £50. Only got them so cheap as they'd misspelled gymshark on their listing. But I love a bargain, if I need anything new I tend to look on ebay or in charity shops first. I tell myself I'm doing a bit for the environment.

SpeedofaSloth · 27/10/2020 15:36

I buy new with tags things from eBay when I spot something I am fairly sure of what I am getting, yes.

Hiccupiscal · 27/10/2020 15:39

I do! After quite a few disappointing ebay purchases, I mostly buy from charity shops and local buy snd sell, eg. Shpock.
Last week brought 2 pairs of jeans for £2.
Liked one pair, sold the other for £2!
So... free jeans.

The tops i am wearing today is oversized burtons jumper- £2.

I save money, help the environment and still can look great, and if I don't wear something much, or decide its not for me, ive hardly lost anything.

I once picked up a genuine YSL dress in green once for £30, I sold it on ebay for about £100, I wish I had kept it now, would be worth alot more now, I think!

I love hearing people who buy clothes second hand, makes me feel great that people are thinking outside the box and making an difference to the environment etc

ArranBound · 27/10/2020 15:39

I got a denim blazer on eBay for a couple of quid and I've worn it so many times. I love it. I do still buy retail, but usually when sales are on or if I get discount codes, but I love finding bargains on eBay. I've recently had a couple of pairs of Boden shoes for about a tenner each, both unworn.
I've given up looking in charity shops. I don't get out much nowadays (I'm disabled) and have never really come across the kinds of brands the OP mentions anyway.

Coconut80 · 27/10/2020 15:46

I've found my people. I can't afford the labels I like in the shops even in the sales. I like toast, whistles, hobbs and boden. I am also in the process of losing weight so it helps to buy then resale on ebay.
I have bought ugg boots, dune trainers and loafers on ebay.

I also look out for any and or john lewis and jl weekend. I have a dress, jumpsuit and top that I could never afford otherwise.

This year due to lock down and my rural location I've bought solely from ebay. I can't see myself going back to paying for brand new.

I've had a few Duff items and rude sellers but overall its been great.

How do people find the other sites like vinted

Floisme · 27/10/2020 15:52

I buy second hand about 75% of the time. Not an EBay fan as I like to see, feel and, to be frank, sniff before parting with my money. I mostly use a great dress agency, some unpredictable but occasionally inspired charity shops, a couple of vintage shops and a market stall.

It's been slim pickings for me lately as, although there have been lots of clear-outs, it's mainly corporate workwear on offer, which isn't a lot of use when you're working from home and hurtling towards retirement. But I did find a WW2 Utility Clothing label tweed jacket in the summer for a couple of quid. My best ever buy was probably a Margaret Howell coat for £17.

spendyspender · 27/10/2020 15:58

I am trying to change my shopping habits hence the username, so today I ventured into a few charity shops and I am delighted with my bargains.

I got a fat face wool dress that has pockets for £2.50, a pair of black oasis jeans for £3.99 and a denim shirt for £2.00.

I also got Nike sports shirts for my child for £1.99 and a few Peter storm long sleeve tops for £1.75 each!

I am officially converted!

Ebay can be a minefield I’ve found. I do buy stuff but I’m very careful as I’ve been burnt with items arriving ‘not as described’ and most definitely not something I’d have bought in real life.

Love a charity shop bargain though! They’re not as easy to find nowadays but occasionally I find something fabulous.

AgnesNaismith · 27/10/2020 16:01

My best ever purchase was a 99p black 60s style wool mini dress from eBay. I wore it on my first date with dh 11 years ago and felt amazing Grin

I’d definitely buy eBay clothes, not the mass made china ones though - genuine second hand.

Floisme · 27/10/2020 16:07

I find you have to put the time in with charity shops. Before lockdown I was doing a circuit of all the half decent ones every 1-2 weeks and more often than not I'd come away empty handed. I don't mind because I enjoy the hunt, but it's time consuming and I couldn't have done it a few years ago when I had more care responsibilities. I need to get back into the habit again now.

Also for anyone thinking of starting, I think it's only fair to add that, while I've found some great bargains, I've also bought some utter shite. Grin

OhRosalind · 27/10/2020 16:14

I love eBay, although it’s not as good as it used to be. Depop, vinted and vestiaire collective are also worth a look. I enjoy hunting for things - saving a search and something pops up months later. Also I am not a minimalist at all when it comes to clothes and accessories so this way I can enjoy clothes and feel less guilty about spending and the environmental impact. My best buys have been cashmere and coats that I could never have afforded new. And a beautiful vintage 1930s green dress that made me feel like an old Hollywood film star. I bought DS a John Lewis dinosaur coat this week that I know he’ll love.

I always donate or sell on stuff we don’t wear, I’m trying to do one in one out. I once bought a Kate Moss for Topshop dress new for £40, when I sold it (used) bidding shot up to over £300 in the final minute, that was satisfying!

Juancornetto · 27/10/2020 16:19

This is how I shop, fast fashion is so bad for the planet, I don't like synthetic fabrics and I dont have much spare cash

MiniTheMinx · 27/10/2020 16:20

I always have. I prefer charity shops, vintage shops and dress agencies. Too much to wade through on ebay. Originally it was because I could buy high end clothes for silly prices, nowadays its just habit. I think some of it is to do with how the shops are organised and lack of choice. So if I look at jackets they will have 10 or 12 but only two in my size. This is great because the choices are narrowed down. Then the only decision is "do I like it?" whereas in the larger shops I feel overwhelmed by too many choices, and because of price I'm then compelled to look in every shop, and then come home empty handed, confused and tired.

I go up to London twice a year to go shopping but recently I've got bored with it and I get tired and last time came home with nothing. I only go now because its a day out with one of my friends.

I just don't enjoy shopping anymore. Although I did buy a 70s dress in an antique shop last week.

Bettina500 · 27/10/2020 16:30

I buy most my clothes from charity shops, I'm not a fan of eBay I like to see what I'm buying. I could afford new but I prefer second hand. I get so much more for my money and it's a great way to experiment with different styles without wasting loads of money if something doesn't look right. Ive found brands I wouldn't have otherwise known about plus its environmentally friendly and benefits the charity.

BackforGood · 27/10/2020 17:00

I buy almost all my clothes from charity shops. Initially because I needed to, but now, I just love the thrill of the bargain. Smile

i'm not a fan of on-line shopping as i like to try things on and see, and feel what I'm buying.

foxtiger · 27/10/2020 18:46

I probably get about half my clothes and a third of my shoes and boots from charity shops or second-hand agencies. I'm nearly always wearing at least one second-hand item! I think my best bargains were three apparently unworn Boden cashmere cardigans for £10 each and a short black M&S trench for about £12 (that's not as big a reduction, but I've been wearing it a lot for about 10 years, so it's turned out to be a very good buy).

JaceLancs · 27/10/2020 18:53

I buy a lot of things on eBay and from charity shops
I also buy from outlets and places like tkmaxx if cheap enough
Occasionally I will shop high St or supermarket but only in sales or with a discount code
Today I’m wearing a stripy wool tube skirt Ralph Lauren via tkmaxx £8
Jaeger cashmere jumper from outlet £35
Valentino rockstud pumps secondhand on eBay (still £150 but I love them)
Whilst out I was wearing a grey wool jaeger coat £45 on eBay

MikeUniformMike · 27/10/2020 19:02

Charity shops and ebay.
Best find - a pair of almost immaculate good brand (about £140 RRP) chelsea boots in my size for £1.

MikeUniformMike · 27/10/2020 19:03

It's a scandi brand that's been mentioned in S&B, and I love them.

Thirtyrock39 · 27/10/2020 19:07

I do although over lockdown I did for the first time in ages buy a few bits 'brand new' from Zara online as had nothing else to spend money on
I do like eBay but tend to avoid the 'new' items as I've bought new brands which have been obviously mass produced rip offs when they've arrived - eg fake converse- I wouldn't trust buying new again as I can't work our which are genuine .
I love a charity shop or eBay gem and definitely think you find real bargains in charity shops in posh areas .

itsureis · 27/10/2020 19:12

I haven't bought anything new, apart from underwear, in ages as we have some brilliant charity shops locally.
They have got savvy though and the even have a special "purple coat hanger" rail for the designer items.
I find I buy things that I wouldn't normally buy as they are a great price, including wetlook pvc trousers and a prom dress 😳

MikeUniformMike · 27/10/2020 19:13

I disagree. I have bought things like Toast, agnes b, Hobbs, Boden, Ralph Lauren etc for £1-£5 in a really crummy shop in a rundown area - it's an outlet one that sells things that didn't sell in posh areas.

Good finds are CS in posh areas like a tiny country town/village where there is only one CS.

ShanghaiDiva · 27/10/2020 19:13

Bought dd a pair of Zara jeans, next skirt and monsoon trousers today. Total spend £10.

Bwlch · 27/10/2020 19:18

I buy most of my clothes and shoes on Ebay. There are no charity shops near here. On the odd occasion I have been in one, they haven't had anything in my size.
