Help me find this dressing gown?

Hoping you could all help me search for something, that I am not sure exists!

My dressing gown has finally died. After 20+ years of getting singed on the fire, coffee spilt down the front, sleeves dipped in butter, vomited on by cats, shed on by cats, kneaded by cats... it's gone Haloween Sad

On the other hand, it was only about a fiver from Tesco, or somewhere like that, and I never liked it. Halloween Blush

I've had a torrid time recently and have decided, as a proper adult, I can allow myself to get a proper dressing gown - i.e. one that costs more than a fiver, and which I actually like.

But I've been googling, and I don't think what I want exists. What I want is a patchwork dressing gown - like Mr. Bagginses here - but full-length, proper silk-velvet, lined, and woman-shaped.

Has anyone come across such a thing?

Oh, and thank you, btw, to all of you, for such cracking suggestions so far - really appreciate it Flowers

I didn't find a single one of these when I was failing at googling, so really, thank you.

Someone (Eminy?) suggested making my own.

I do have a sewing machine I can more or less use ignoring the snapped needle jammed in it at the moment, but wouldn't a dressing gown come under the 'quite advanced' category? Or are they in general less likely to bugger up than more fitted things like shirts or dresses?

My Dh has just said ' what on earth are you googling?'Grin

Think it might be tricky to make especially if you wanted it lined.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 26/10/2020 16:20

Dressing gowns are actually pretty easy to sew as they're not fitted, it's just a lot of straight seams - but doing the patchwork first and then giving it a lining (which you'd need to cover up the patchwork seams) would make it more complicated, plus all & velvet can be a bugger to work with. I'd see if you can find someone else to do it for you first of all...

If you did decide to make it yourself then I'd do a hunt around the charity shops for velvet scarves, probably cheaper than buying new fabric!

I'm actually part way through making that dressing gown for DS2. We spent weeks one summer hols sourcing, cutting dyeing fabric strips and them machining them together. We found an old 50's dressing gown smoking jacket pattern and another few days adapting it. We've yet to get the lining fabric or put it all together...DS has now moved out and we don't have swathes of days together any more to finish what turned out to be a very time consuming project!

Oh my goodness @Gonegrey31 those are absolutely beautiful. Do you have one?

If I tell my husband I want a £225 dressing gown for Christmas he'll think I've gone mad... especially as I hardly wear a dressing gown (I usually wear warm pjs and bung a jumper over if it's cold.) But I SO want one!

groutingqueen · 27/10/2020 10:42

OMG I love those gowns @Gonegrey31 !!!
Do you have one? I posted this week about a liberty gown but I think these look incredible!!!!

Gonegrey31 · 27/10/2020 10:47

Sadly I don’t have one ( but have dropped hints to the family) but do have a number of the coats and jackets. I bought my mother a dressing gown a few years ago and she adores it, pretty well lives in it now ( she is nearly 90).

God, I REALLY want one ...

I can't decide which colour. Or the size, come to that - trust that sizing is OK, or size up for plenty of room (but that would mean XL, and that is a heyoooooge size range?

Pale aqua/pale cyan?

Moss rose/eucalyptus?

Rich ruby (but I can't see an electric moss to see if I like reverse)?

Maybe Rococo pink/baroque?

I am actually sorely tempted to have a day out and go to the shop, damn you Gonegrey31!
