Body odour/armpit help!

Yes, I have NC Grin
So I wash (daily) with dettol soap/hibiscrub under my arms and a scrubby thing so they're completely clean and no trace of deo. I don't smell getting out the shower
I use my usual antiperspirant (dove for men as I prefer the smell) but by mid afternoon I smell. Nothing changed, I drink loads of water, am not doing sweaty work but it's that kind of stress sweat smell if that makes sense?
I'm torn between trying something mega strong or going either no deo or a natural one whilst I'm WFH...
any ideas?

Could it be medication or menopause related?

armpit101 · 25/10/2020 19:44

@Amber0685 I don't think so - I'm 35 and no change in medication recently

I find the kind that you put on at bedtime work the best, I used triple dry unscented for ages, but even that stopped working for no apparent reason and I would be stinky by 9.30 am. Have switched to Mitcham ultimate gel, which works for now.

AbbyAbal · 25/10/2020 19:47

I have to switch deodorants about once a year, no idea why but they seem to stop working. Mitchum is the best though. Maybe try switching your soap too

Tronkmanton · 25/10/2020 19:48

Try Dove Maximum strength roll on. It comes in a box, costs about £4.99. As pp above you put it in at night.

LadyCatStark · 25/10/2020 19:48

I honestly believe your body gets used to your regular deodorant after a while! It’s happened to me with Mitchum, Triple Dry and Sure maximum protection. I’m currently using Mitchum for men which is working ATM.

SpeedofaSloth · 25/10/2020 19:49

Are you sure it's not your clothes?

Cookiecrumbles2020 · 25/10/2020 19:51

Driclor worked for me. Painful though

EyeDrops · 25/10/2020 19:53

Perspirex is the only thing I've found to be effective for me. It's one that you have on overnight then wash off.

armpit101 · 25/10/2020 19:54

@SpeedofaSloth definitely not clothes, I had a good sniff before! I use the dettol laundry stuff on anything that might smell, and it happens even in a vest top

itsmschanandlerbong · 25/10/2020 19:56

Definitely try Mitchum roll in, I had the same problem as you and it worked for me.

ouchmyfeet · 25/10/2020 19:57

I had this a few years ago. I think the strong deodorants make it worse. They are so powerful that they cling to your skin and it's pretty much impossible to wash them off. I read somewhere (possibly MN) that bacteria become trapped in the anti perspirant that stays on your skin for days then as soon as you start to sweat it smells. Didn't sound very scientific Confused but I was at the point where I'd try anything. As I increased the strength of the deodorant I was using the smell got worse so it seemed like it might be plausible. I was the same as you, I'd come out of the shower smelling perfectly fine but as soon as my underarms got even a bit warm I stank. I think it was stuck in my clothes too.

I decided to bite the bullet and go natural, just deodorant rather than anti perspirant to see if a break from the strong deodorant would let my skin recover and enable me to properly clean the anti perspirant off.

I'd say it took 2-3 weeks for me to stop smelling. I used to shower with dettol soap and then use deodorant (not anti perspirant). I tried loads but basically none of them worked and I was quite smelly for a couple of weeks. Then something changed and I started to smell less bad. Just like fresh sweat rather than stale. I now use one of the salt crystal deodorants and this works perfectly for me. I don't need to use anti bac soap any more, regular is fine and I don't smell at all.

A few of my tops were beyond help and had to be thrown out. I still believe that they were some how impregnated with the smell from deodorant sticking to them.

Working from home is a perfect time to do this, I'd recommend giving it a go. Expect it to get worse before it gets better but it's definitely worth trying going cold turkey on the anti perspirant.

armpit101 · 25/10/2020 20:02

I used old spice deo today (not antiperspirant) and I smell better but then I've not been working!
I've got a Mitchum spray but that was awful, think I have a dove overnight cream one somewhere I can try

It could be your clothes. The underarms pick up your sweat so you you launder the garments. They come out of the washing machine smelling clean and sweet, but after you' ve been wearing them for an hour or more they start smelling. It think warmth reactivates some sport of residue, because I can also trigger the smell by ironing the clean garments.

Pretreating the underarms with vinegar before washing the garments helps, but eventually bleaches the underarms. Though TBF if the garment is already ruined by the recurring smell...

The only thing I have found that actually works to get rid of the smell completely is Halo sports detergent. Unfortunately I am allergic to it.

Using a sweat-suppressing deodorant like Triple Dry or Mitchum is also effective (but only on new garments). Unfortunately they not only irritate my skin, but they make me sweat more elsewhere.

You, however, may not be as delicate a flower as me!

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 25/10/2020 20:07

I highly recommend Nuud which is a natural type product that you put on once or twice a week. Won't stop you sweating but completely gets rid of any ping and is much better for your skin than harsh antiperspirants.

The only ones that work for me now (funnily enough, since j turned about 35) are Mitchums. I prefer the solid one, but tbh they are expensive and you lose about 1/3 due to the packaging. The roll on is by far the best - although really you have to dry using a hairdryer. But it lasts from one morning to the next, and longer if you don’t wash!

pinkbalconyrailing · 25/10/2020 20:10

how do you wash your clothes?
try washing them at 40 on a long cotton cycle.

FippertyGibbett · 25/10/2020 20:13

Biological washing powder and the Mitchum stick deodorant.

armpit101 · 25/10/2020 20:15

I use Bio washing powder on a cotton long wash at 40, no fabric conditioner and use dettol laundry cleanser. It's definitely not the clothes, if I sniff my actual armpit while I'm naked it's that

TheSpottedZebra · 25/10/2020 20:17

Have you recently started with the Hibiscrub?

aprilstory · 25/10/2020 20:17

Could it be change of diet? Often body odours are related to what you eat - meat, cheese, yoghurt etc.?

pinkbalconyrailing · 25/10/2020 20:18

do you eat a lot of garlic?
if yes try adding ginger, that seems to help with the smell

armpit101 · 25/10/2020 20:19

@TheSpottedZebra no, I use it on medical advice. Probably been a good 5 years or so I've been using it. I alternate between dettol soap and hibiscrub depending on my skin, and use like a mesh bag thing so it really scrubs it

armpit101 · 25/10/2020 20:20

Diet... not much change except I'm eating less calories as dieting. Pretty standard diet, meat/veg/fruit/dairy but less than 1300 cals a day
