Moving from high end toiletries to good quality budget

Which swaps have you made effectively to reduce your budget (whilst still looking gorgeous)?

I used to use high end for pretty much everything but I’m trying to slowly replace with more reasonably priced products.

So far I’ve switched:

dermalogica eye maker remover for nivea

Aveda and kerastase for herbal essences

I’m using Palmers for all body cream/fake tan which is amazing.

I’m yet to swap my dermalogica face wash and moisturiser- have you got any recommendations?

I’m using a vegan mascara called poppy Austin which I love and is a great price. I can’t bear to part with bare minerals for face powered

Oh and I tried dying my own hair which was disastrous (blonde went ginger) so I now have a mobile hairdresser who is fab and I’m saving a fortune with her

Cetaphil face wash. Less harsh than Dermalogica.
Moisturiser depends on your age, skin type etc.

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/10/2020 18:20

Look out for discount codes for Poppy Austin. Their brand was built upon giving out freebies in return for positive reviews on Amazon. Don't think they're so common now, but I've had all sorts from them.

Sexnotgender · 24/10/2020 18:21

Astral cream is the only moisturiser I use. It’s amazing.

DariaMorgendorffer · 24/10/2020 18:26

Cerave face wash

Inkey List polyglutamic acid

Nivea soft body lotion

Pantene repair & protect hair mask

The palmers tinted lotion is amazing!

Can't find any cheap shampoos/conditioners that match higher end for my hair, but tigi is a nice mid-range option. Joico and Kerastase my favourites. Will watch with interest.

swimster01 · 24/10/2020 18:27

I used to buy high end everything - it really makes no difference.

Superdrug own range toiletries are excellent. Wilko Essence range cosmetics have some hits (especially eyeliners and mascaras) although I haven't got on as well with the blushers and powders. Sleek blushers are very good though.

Heisenjurg · 24/10/2020 18:35

Gosh makes a mineral powder that is great at a third of the price of Bare Minerals!

I also use coconut oil as a make up remover, works greater and a big pot goes a very long way (can also be used for hair masks etc.).

beautyboxaddict · 24/10/2020 18:37

I know you’ve said you can’t bear to give up your Bare Minerals but I’ve used Lily Lolo before and really rated it. They do samples quite cheaply if you did want to try it out

passthemustard · 24/10/2020 18:38

Have you tried beauty pie? I really like their Uber youth and super healthy skin ranges for skin care and the Uber volume boost mascara (£4.10!) I also use the everyday great skin foundation.

muckandnettles · 24/10/2020 18:40

Neutrogena body lotion is lovely and comes in a big pump bottle which is very handy I think.

rookiemere · 24/10/2020 18:42

I find the Simple Regenerating Face wash is great - not the standard one though must be the regenerating one - and can often get Simple for 30% off at Boots or the supermarket.

I've had my hair highlighted at huge expense for years, during lockdown I started using semi permanent hair colour instead and even my hairdresser said it really suited me. I am keeping going with it as having highlights without a cup of tea and wearing a mask doesn't seem like fun.

I use the cheapest make up remover wipes that I can as you put moisturiser in afterwards.

I didn't get on with Aldi LaCura though - a friend gave me some night cream and I found it a bit chalky and overly scented.

1moreRep · 24/10/2020 18:43

The Aldi body moisturiser is amazing (Nivea Rip off) rose oil and toner

HorsesDogsNails · 24/10/2020 18:46

I second Lily Lolo mineral make up, amazing quality and not expensive!

lazylinguist · 24/10/2020 18:49

Aldi. I love their dupes for Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish and their moisturisers, especially the Caviar ones.

lazylinguist · 24/10/2020 18:50

Oh and their Q10 serum is great.

silentpool · 24/10/2020 18:52

I think there can be a difference between ingredients if you have sensitive skin. I was using budget brands but had to upgrade to some of the French brands (I.e Avene) because they don't do fragrance etc. But some of those are often on offer at Boots & Superdrug so can work out reasonable.

CardiganBlobby · 24/10/2020 19:02

Second vote here for beauty pie - lots of options for different skin types.

suziesue45 · 24/10/2020 19:03

Oh I've just gone the other way with hair care, I was using treseme deep repair and got a right telling off by my hairdresser so I've switched to Aveda Sap Moss, the difference is unreal.
I use coconut oil as makeup remover tho so saving a bit there.

cameocat · 24/10/2020 19:10

I really like the M and S Pure range which is also vegan. It's almost as good as the Emma hardie face cleanser and a quarter of the price.

RunBackwards · 24/10/2020 19:11

I'm not sure I was ever particularly high end but IMO ordinary aqueous cream, with a hot cloth, is much better than that Liz Earle cleanse and polish loved on here.

I also love the original Olay night cream, just a moisturiser, no fancy claims but it's lovely .

Agree Lily Lolo mineral foundation is as good as much more expensive brands

MrsHSW · 24/10/2020 19:18

Another vote for essence cosmetics - they are sold in Wilko in the UK. Particularly their mascara, nail varnish and concealer.

Shitonthebloodything · 24/10/2020 19:53

I use beauty pie, Olay and superdrug own brand which have all been equally as good as high end stuff.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/10/2020 20:08

I really like all the Aldi face and hand creams. But I do like the scent - can imagine it wouldn't agree with everyone.

CanIHibernate · 24/10/2020 20:16

I used high end creams for a long time. I now use ponds and nivea and honestly think they are better

2021optimist · 24/10/2020 20:19

I use La Mer soft cream because I love the feel of it. I'd be happy to swap to something cheaper if I could get the same texture.
