Moving from high end toiletries to good quality budget

Which swaps have you made effectively to reduce your budget (whilst still looking gorgeous)?

I used to use high end for pretty much everything but I’m trying to slowly replace with more reasonably priced products.

So far I’ve switched:

dermalogica eye maker remover for nivea

Aveda and kerastase for herbal essences

I’m using Palmers for all body cream/fake tan which is amazing.

I’m yet to swap my dermalogica face wash and moisturiser- have you got any recommendations?

I’m using a vegan mascara called poppy Austin which I love and is a great price. I can’t bear to part with bare minerals for face powered

Superdrug hot cloth cleanser (green one iirc) is just as good as the liz earle cleanse and polish...and about a quarter of the price!

TriTriTriAgain · 24/10/2020 20:27

Superdrug own brand cleansers are good, specifically the vitamin E hot cloth cleanser. I’ve switched to bars of shampoo and conditioner. The best conditioner bar I’ve found is a Juliet Rose avocado one - about £9 but lasts literally months and SO much better for your hair. The cheaper conditioners just seem to coat your hair with silicon to make it feel silky smooth, but actually are doing nothing for the condition of it. So, saves money, less plastic and actually does some good for your hair.

SandysMam · 24/10/2020 20:29

The whole Superdrug naturally radiant range (green packaging) is incredible. I wouldn’t swap it for anything.

Tangledtresses · 24/10/2020 20:34

I like simple face wash the micelar one is mild and non drying and no perfume

Spied · 24/10/2020 20:36

Nivea moisturising lotion 3.99ish can be used on face and body and is great.
I often put a spritz of my favourite perfume in it before I add to my body and it's just like the expensive body lotion that costs£££.
Dove 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner is great at around £1.99.

I buy all my products in TK maxx. They even have a vegan range........I'm currently hooked on a lemon shower oil from there which is even nicer than loccutaine citrus verbena. I think I only paid £3 for it.

mamaca · 24/10/2020 20:41

I've started using a Tesco foaming cleanser instead of a clarins one which I had used for years - the Tesco one is brilliant and removes all traces of make-up! Also, have switched from clarins night cream to Aldi's q10, have noticed a positive difference in my skin.

Biancadelrioisback · 24/10/2020 21:00

Simple face wash and Sukin creams (eye cream, day cream, night cream and hydration oil).
I also use The Ordinary products for vitamin c serum.

VampireVicki · 24/10/2020 21:23

ANother vote for the Superdrug hot cloth cleansers. I have used both but really prefer the Vitamin E one for my combination skin.

Nivea Q10 eye cream is fantastic, and I use Olay Regenerist 3 point firming cream (both the day and night creams)

I still splash out on Prai neck cream though - can't find anything as good as that anywhere. It's like magic!

tappitytaptap · 24/10/2020 22:02

@cameocat

I really like the M and S Pure range which is also vegan. It's almost as good as the Emma hardie face cleanser and a quarter of the price.
Ooh which one is that? I’ve had the Emma Hardie balm cleanser a couple of times in beauty advent calendars and loved it so something almost as good would be fab. I’ve had some pure face creams before and they’ve been great.
tappitytaptap · 24/10/2020 22:06

I like La Roche Posay skincare, not super cheap but not high end. Nivea Micellar Water to remove make up (pink bottle - other one doesn’t agree with my skin and it’s not sensitive at all). Also like The Ordinary caffeine eye solution and Garnier Lavandin face oil.

Juanmorebeer · 25/10/2020 06:40

For foundation The Ordinary is only £6 and really good.

ALDI version of touche eclat click concealer is the best.

For skin super drug cleansers are very good.

I really like the range of waitrose own shower gels, they are about £1 or maybe £1.50 now but have great range of scents.

LittleLapwing · 25/10/2020 06:44

I switched from high end. I tried a few moisturisers but the best I found are the Lidl ones with hyalouronic acid and q10. Costs about £1.89 and there is NO difference. I’ve had unsolicited compliments on how good my skin is looking and people asking me what I use since I started it, which I never had with the high ends.

AuntieMarys · 25/10/2020 06:45

I couldn't give up Dermalogica. Spent too many years finding what works with my sensitive skin.

mysticpistachio · 25/10/2020 08:30

This is a brilliant thread.

Girlintheframe · 25/10/2020 08:32

I've used a whole range of high end but after doing some research on ingredients have moved to
Cerave hydrating face wash as 2nd cleanse,
Cetreban moisterizer.
Shea moisture hair products

Still using up the more pricey serums and may still continue to spend money there.
Have to say the cheaper products don't feel as luxurious but I think that is more to do with perception than anything else.

QualityFeet · 25/10/2020 08:33

Lily lilo is better than BM on me and their blushers are lovely

UntamedWisteria · 25/10/2020 08:34

Moved from Clarins moisturisers to M&S - about a third of the cost, and just as good.

40notfabulous · 25/10/2020 09:04

The palmers tinted lotion is amazing!

Tell me more about this!

40notfabulous · 25/10/2020 09:04

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 25/10/2020 09:10

Radiatornoise · 25/10/2020 09:12

Years ago I had a cleaner who was training to be a beauty therapist. She told me that Clarins and M&S were made in the same factory and were pretty much identical.

With regard to moisturiser, use anything that suits your skin as long as it has an SPF, min factor 15.

EasternDailyStress · 25/10/2020 09:18

I recently had to give up using anything on my face, due to a reaction while on medication.

My face looks no different, in fact it's probably better.

Now I just wash my face at night with a mild soap, and moisturise with E45 lotion. I'm convinced now that all the chemicals/natural additives/routines are a waste of time and money.

Just had an appointment with an amazing dermatologist last week about some sun damage (grr at all those years with spf50... still not enough!)

She said that cerave was her number 1 favourite (I personally prefer cetaphil at night, cerave in the day) and la Roche posay heliocare spf50.

I then have retirides tretinoin 0.025%, Soolantra for rosacea, and skinoren azelaic acid (the ordinary azelaic acid was just as good as skinoren I think).

Used to use olive or jojoba oils to remove makeup, however skin changed and Bioderm sebium micellaire water was a game changer, two big bottles from amazon last me a year.
