Anyone has chosen to keep you natural hair colour as you grow older? I mean, whats wrong about keeping grey hair ?

i prob will...

though it will be hard!..his morning washing my hair...reclining in the bath ...i looked up to see a single hair protruding like a pure sugar unicorn horn...from my otherwise dark brown hair

woe

chenin · 13/10/2007 16:45

Noooo.... I am half grey! Never, never never... till the day they put the lid on the coffin!

Unless you are Helen Mirren or Judi Dench, it ages you soooo much1

MaryAnnSingletomb · 13/10/2007 16:46

I did a thread about this a while ago - see if I can link it !!

chenin · 13/10/2007 16:47

There are fantastic subtle hair colours out there now.. I have to have a full colour with highlights every 10-12 weeks, but without it... I look ten years older.

Not likely. Dh feels the same about a grey haired wife as he does about hairy breasted wife.

3sEnough · 13/10/2007 16:53

No - not til I'm at least 80!!!

chenin · 13/10/2007 16:53

Why would anyone even consider letting the grey all show... it is not a nice colour particularly, unless you happen to have a beautiful bone structure and silvery grey type hair... very rare.
Mine hair is dark blonde and half dirty grey and it looks revolting... so I would rather not eat and spend the money on having hair coloured (slight exaggeration there maybe!)

chikenmother · 13/10/2007 16:56

Thank you MaryAnnSingletomb.

Well, I do keep my greys anf feel good about them. Colouring hair would be another way of creating things you HAVE to do, and a natural look is always nice if you can cope with it. Freedom is also not to be obliged to hide your real nature...I think!

god yeah cm ...i am lazier than i am vain

Spiderhammer · 13/10/2007 17:01

Chiken I've been dyeing mine for a couple of years now and I'm fed up with it. I might just bite the bullet and let my silver shine on through while I've still some brown left.

It does age me though when I let it come through. Then I dye it, it looks great for a week or two, then the colour fades and has that unnatural orange glow, and also by now the condition of it is ruined and on and on and on.

I'm fed up with the cycle and I'm quite anti toxic chemicals at heart and have heard bad things about brown hair dye in particular.

OK you've talked me into it. I'm due to dye it as some grey roots are coming through but I won't. Cold turkey time.

Mercy · 13/10/2007 17:05

You're a brave woman Spiderhammer, good for you!

This is one time in my life when I wish I was blonde.

allhallows · 13/10/2007 17:12

So dh has no choice but to cough up for my professionally coloured hair.

beansontoast · 13/10/2007 17:12

yeah bravespiderhammer!jsut do it yeah...i suspect im actually 'all mouth'[spineless emoticon]

how old are you cold turkeyer?...if you dont mind my asking...and how much do you suppose it will age you..

shall i shut up?...am i destroying your resolve?

Spiderhammer · 13/10/2007 17:16

My dh's grandmother dyes her hair and she's about 137. It looks quite strange I have to admit.

chenin · 13/10/2007 17:21

Well.... when I'm ancient... I will reconsider but life's too short to look old before yer time. Just my opinion of course... I did leave my hair once and let the grey come through just to see if I could live with it and it made my wrinkles look more noticeable!
I felt rejuvenated once it was coloured again. It only takes 2 hours every 10-12 weeks so time is not an issue... but of course it isn't cheap...

franke · 13/10/2007 17:29

I had my hair coloured (just a toner that washes out after a couple of months) recently and it felt so good. And it was just so much shinier and more manageable. Shame I'm such a lazy slattern, it could be years before I get round to having it done again.

zippitippitoes · 13/10/2007 17:31

i dye mine at home and think it looks fine and perfectly natural so not expensive and not a chore

Lio · 13/10/2007 17:39

I'm the opposite of helliebean: why would you dye your hair?

Spiderhammer · 13/10/2007 17:44

I do mine at home too zippi but it looks shite after a couple of weeks. Also I have to use conditioner EVERY time I wash it, because the dye has wrecked it.

NO. I'm inspired by the other thread and this one. I'm going to let it be from now on.

woodenchair · 13/10/2007 17:56

I think the trick is having a cut that suits the grey. I have a streak at the front and when it was one length I got lots of compliments. It wasn't until I changed the cut that I felt it aged me so now I colour it.

AeFondKiss · 13/10/2007 18:13

I have a few white hairs, in amongst the very dark brown hair... at the moment I am trying to pretend they are interesting highlights, but I am not sure what I would do if I was going grey, not white.....

I am 34 and really I am probably too lazy/disinterested in dyeing, but I will wait and see how I feel when I am nearing 40....

woodenchair · 13/10/2007 18:17

AeFondKiss.I was the same with the interesting highlights. Have now reached nearly 38 and decided it's time to put the breaks on with the aging process!

chenin · 13/10/2007 20:37

lio.. have to answer... you ask 'why would you dye your hair?'

I answer... I am 52 (late starter with kids!)... why do I want to look like their granny... I am in my prime and I want to look like I am! I look 10 years older with grey hair.

Lio · 15/10/2007 10:52

hi hellibean, I wanted to reply but internet went screwy at home. Am at work so have to be short, but thank you for response and I have been doing a lot of thinking as a result I have quite unformed (and, I will admit, uninformed) feelings about media portrayal of women and the affect that has on society, and although I dyed my hair from approx age 16-25, I stopped when the grey started becoming more prominent (i.e other way around to most people). Anyway, sorry not to give a better response, I do think there is a probably a phd or two in the topic of hair dye.
