Anyone has chosen to keep you natural hair colour as you grow older? I mean, whats wrong about keeping grey hair ?

I am 51 and have been grey since my 30's. I have short hair and colour it once every 6 weeks. I can use half the pack - so it costs me about 3 pounds and half an hour. I would hate to stop doing it - I don't want to look like my dd's granny - it wouldn't be nice for her. Most people assume I am about 40, and I am happy with that.

I am going grey and at the moment I am happy to leave it as it is - I don't think it looks boring, in fact I think it's kind of interesting. DH doesn't mind, in fact he says he likes it. I can't afford a salon colour, and the home ones I have always been disappointed with, plus I don't really like the thought of using all those chemicals. I have a good haircut, keep it in a nice trendy style and it's always shiny and looks good. I also always have a bit of make up on, otherwise yes I find I do look tired. (But then I usually am tired!) . Yes I think if you have drab grey hair, badly cut, no make up etc you will look old and tired. But just grey alone will not do that.

I am 36 and have been slowly going grey since I was 21 (in fact I found my 1st grey hair on the morning of my 21st birthday

I have died it for years, but the at home jobbies just don't look natural to me.
I am now horrified at the amount of chemicals I have put on top of my head in an attempt to hide the grey. So I am going to let it grow through. It is very streaky at the front, and all brown at the back, so I may just get away with it [here's hopeful emoticon]

I think for me it is definately a fear of chemicals thing!

Countingthegreyhairs · 15/10/2007 13:32

Could not but post on this one !!

I've got very pale skin and very dark eyebrows and all previous attempts at colouring have just looked fake. So I'm out and proud! Same as BeansonToast. In addition, I'm lazy and I hate going to the hairdressers. Simply cannot bear sitting in a salon for hours at a time in a sea of chemical fumes.

Also - although ancient - still ttc and don't want any chemicals near my head currently.

Totally agree with Desiderata on other thread - might think again if they just produced one called "Mouse"!

hippipot: best of luck, if you need a support group it seems there are a few grey-ites on here

MaryAnnSingletomb · 15/10/2007 14:19

I'm going for hair cut and high lights tomorrow - it has been ages since I last went (couldn't afford it !0 and during that time I've quite got to like the grey bits at my parting - so I'm going to see whether hairdresser will advise me on incorporating grey into the hair so that it all looks natural and will make it happen more gradually (overall grey I mean) I always think colour over grey, even porofessionally done, can look pretty awful (see old ladies with that strange orangey browny tint, even worse old men)

Countingthegreyhairs · 15/10/2007 14:42

What shall we call our support group then Chikenmother/Lio?

Silver but savvy

Grey is the new black

Badgers united

Piebolds but old (or bald)

I'm cr*p at this need help

Countingthegreyhairs · 15/10/2007 14:53

Oh no - meant to say - but NOT old or bald ... obviously

hippipotOFBLOODami · 15/10/2007 16:24

Oh, no, do I need luck?

I will join the support group if I may

northender · 15/10/2007 16:45

I'm 35 and have a considerable amount of grey hair, it is fairly evenly spread. I was considering dyeing it but since starting using straighteners I've changed my mind, think it was the texture rather than the colour that bothered me (grey hair's more wiry) so the straighteners solve that.

Be grey and proud of it!

My mil dyes her hair and sh has no idea what her natural colour is!

Lio · 15/10/2007 21:27

ha ha, I am so lax I will probably forget to come to support group meetings. If we are feeling posh we could go for 'au naturel', otherwise I like 'grey is the new black' (or in my case the new very boring brown) or the badgers one
