Help me work out DD's bra size and where to order online?

So under bust 27" (not tight), over bust 31". I daren't use the boob or bust method because it would probably tell me she's a 26DD and we'd never get bras for her (plus if we did they would look ridiculous, she's 10).
Should I just go for 28A and see what happens? We're beyond crop tops and the like now as she really does need some support/containment but obviously don't want underwires.

She doesn't want to go bra shopping/trying on, so have to buy online. Any suggestions?

If she measured 26DD on BOB you could try a Boux Avenue bra in a 28D/DD their backs come up tight generally

Bobbybobbins · 08/10/2020 22:30

I would get her a few different options in a 28 in different style/cup sizes and see what fits/what she likes, then send back those that don't.

IronLawOfGeometricProgression · 08/10/2020 22:32

28D

IggyAce · 08/10/2020 22:33

I’m not an expert but don’t add any inches to the the band, because it’s an odd number I’d suggest a 28 and each inch difference is a cup size I think so try 28C. I got my dd some plain non wired slightly padded bras from Matalan. But try M&S, Debenhams, Boux Avenue.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 08/10/2020 22:44

Ooh matalan is a good call, thanks. I will check out the website. I was a little wary of padded as I don't feel added volume is a good thing (she's the only girl in her class who has hit puberty and it's already hard enough!), but if some extra control reduces the bounce then it may balance things out.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 08/10/2020 22:48

Nope, Matalan only seem to do A or AA in a 28, smallest C cup is a 32.
Maybe I should go sports bra in an extra small or ladies size 6/8? Haven't found any girls sports bras that look like they'd actually be supportive.

I went to M&S and bought a few styles... they have one that looks like a crop top at front but has bra cups inside so not as noticeable as a bra for a younger girl. Then I took back ones that didn’t fit.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 08/10/2020 22:50

That sounds good @Lollypop701 I will see if I can find that.

When they say padded they usually mean moulded which can be good if she wants to make sure her nipples don't show through thinner bras.

Don't get her a 28A, that's not her size, will be uncomfortable and she will be constantly adjusting it and as such draw more attention to it.

Try Debenhams, Boux Avenue, EBay or even Primark for smaller sized bras

IggyAce · 09/10/2020 05:54

Asda has these they may not be suitable because your buying by age but they may be a good stop gap short term.

Holiday21plea · 09/10/2020 06:02

I think your DD needs to go to the store to try a bra on. Can’t you go early morning before the shops get full?

IggyAce · 09/10/2020 06:08

@Holiday21plea unfortunately most changing rooms are still closed due to COVID, so that’s not really going to be possible.

Frumpypigskin · 09/10/2020 07:17

I used this to work out my daughter's size: www.royce-lingerie.co.uk/fit-guide

This says your daughter is a 32AA

Spaceprincess · 09/10/2020 08:29

When my girls were younger I used to get their bras from Primark. They have lots of colours/prints suitable (although I do remember a particularly grim Tweety Pie one) and start at a 30 band size. We also had M&Co ones as they did a younger girls range.

That's not right though.

OPs DD doesn't have a 36 inch back. That's the old way of measuring, when bras didn't have much elasticity/flexibility.

I agree with trying a 28 D

Devenhams have a good range - returns are easy.

BoulangerieBabs · 09/10/2020 09:58

You're going to need a 28C or a 30B I think. But different styles will need different sizes.

Changethetoner · 09/10/2020 10:06

M&Co have some plainish bras, a two-pack one white one nude. There are unwired ones as well as wired ones. I got some for my DD.

GunsAndShips · 09/10/2020 10:16

Why would a bra in the right size look ridiculous? She's young and developing, she needs the right size.

We found M&S good for smaller band sizes for adolescents.

Fizbosshoes · 09/10/2020 10:19

My DD is 14 and was measured last year at M and S as 30D. I'm sure shes grown since then but havent measured again. I am pretty flat chested and usually wear xs crop tops or sports bras but the band on most womens xs is usually too big for her. Shes got a few xs from primark that fit and one from tesco.

BoulangerieBabs · 09/10/2020 10:21

Sorry I forgot to mention then when fitting a child's first bras you shouldn't use the same way of fitting as you would with an adult woman.

The tape measure shouldn't be pulled tight as you would when measuring yourself. There needs to be some slack because you don't want to be squashing her developing breast tissue.

GreyishDays · 09/10/2020 10:23

Totally on the padded front. They’re just the type that still have a bit of shape when empty, so you can’t see their nipples, not to give extra boobs.
StatisticallyChallenged · 09/10/2020 10:44

I have a DD of same age and size (very similar measurements) and I've found that a lot of the non wired "teen" type bras run very small in the band. So whilst I would definitely not use the old +4 method, her exact measurements may be too small. A lot of them have very thin bands too so digging in is not good.

Based on that experience and her measurements I'd suggest trying a 28C to begin with. A 28C is designed for a 31 overbust. John Lewis do some not bad ones.

Their 28s were more like a 26 in reality.

My DD is also getting on well with Calvin Klein bralettes - they're very soft and the ladies xs is a pretty good fit.
