Frizzy, colour & heat damaged hair? What’s your shampoo secret weapon?

EffYouSeeKaye · 07/10/2020 19:26

I’ve been sucked into all manner of beautiful packaging / clever sales technique products over the years... (see bottom drawer, left hand side for dusty evidence of 😬)

Curly (with age), greying (see afore), thick (apart from the odd patch around the parting 🙄) hair. Takes ages to dry. Literally wets itself with excitement at turning crap with the first sign of damp/ humidity.

L’oreal Elvive colour protect / OGX /Palmer’s Coconut something or other etc etc etc All great at first, then coat my hair and leave it feeling unwashed.

CBA with Curly Girl ™️. Don’t want to be curly. Want sleek & shiny.

Is there a miracle shampoo & conditioner combo I need in my life? Does it exist? Hairdresser recommended some ‘WOW’ spray lately... £30. Fine. If it works. Aveda??

Any and all recommendations welcome 🙏

Salon professional ones. My choice is Joico currently but I've used Aveda in the past. I'll never go back to high street brands again.

OneMoreForExtra · 07/10/2020 19:41

Sooooo salon brands you say?

I have same hair and daren't veer from Aussie miracle shampoo and conditioner plus frizz ease serum for fear of turning into a haystack. I just comb eith a wide-tooth comb when wet and leave to air dry, anything else... yes, haystack again.

My curls are in theory fabulous and bouncy, but in early 50s the curly hair/curly face/curly jawline is doing me no favours and I long for smoothness and sleekness

Grin Relate to that so much, unfortunately. Watching thread with interest...

Blondiney · 07/10/2020 20:11

You can buy that WOW stuff in a smaller size to try. I did that, just as well as it was crap on my mop. Seems to work on every bastard else though so worth a try.

Blondiney · 07/10/2020 20:14

The only thing that did anything half decent was this cheapo Tresemme Keratin Smooth treatment.

For frizzy hair the secret is no shampoo. Or extremely rare, regardless of what it is. I condition mine daily in the shower and shampoo with a fairly average shampoo. My hair looks so much better since I started doing this, and my semi permanent colour lasts better.

Bubbletrouble43 · 07/10/2020 20:18

Sorry that should read I only shampoo every 7 to 10 days 🤣

Cheesypea · 07/10/2020 20:19

I rinse my hair put conditioner on for half and hour to an hour, then shampoo it, does seem more hydrated- bloody faff

jcurve · 07/10/2020 20:28

Shampoo and conditioner doesn’t really matter for me, but blow dry products do. Currently using Ouai leave in conditioner and finishing with Lee Stafford anti-humidity spray which makes my very fine, coloured, dry fluffy hair behave itself, even in this weather.

If Ouai is too pricey, I previously used Tresemme Volumising Blow Dry Creme which is not remotely volumising but great for making hair behave itself.

EffYouSeeKaye · 07/10/2020 20:28

@Cheesypea yes, agree, that does work. But also yes to the ruddy faff...

@OneMoreForExtra yep, Aussie is pretty good. Often go back to them.

@Blondiney yours in Frizz Solidarity, sister. I will look out for the sample WOW size as I have learnt to be sceptical from repeated failure. Also, FYI, avoid Florida as a holiday destination. Nightmare.

Olaplex. Quite literally changed my life.

LunaNorth · 07/10/2020 20:32

Olaplex. It’s the absolute dog’s bollocks. It’s so good that I would use it even if it was actually made from actual dogs’ bollocks.

Also Philip Kingsley Elasticizer.

EffYouSeeKaye · 07/10/2020 20:32

@Bubbletrouble43 but my roots get so sticky if I don’t shampoo. I can’t bear it.

Maybe salon is the way to go. I did try Aveda once but I think it was a brunette enhancing one (so that was a looong time ago). What’s their formula for shit frizzy hair that has all but expired from excess colouring in & heat taming then?

OP posts:
EffYouSeeKaye · 07/10/2020 20:34

Ooh Olaplex? Brand new Intel. Never heard of. Off to Google and dream of another miracle cure.

God I am a salesperson’s wet dream.

Don’t bother with the WOW stuff. A disappointment.
I’ve had great results from the Superdrug Elasticizer, ( as good as the Philip Kingsley one) followed by Aussie shampoo and conditioner.
Blow dry using a round brush and a nozzle pointed down the hair.

BoomyBooms · 07/10/2020 20:53

Wow stuff sounds tempting but a Google search told me it was full of silicones so ultimately damages your hair.

Olaplex is fantastic but you need to ha e the first and second steps done by a hairdresser and then you can do follow ups at home with the third step, or else it doesn't work.

I cracked last year and invested in Aveda smooth remedy shampoo, conditioner and a couple of style products. It is the best thing I have ever used on my curly frizzy hair!

Olaplex works for me without any hairdresser input.
Pachonga · 07/10/2020 21:16

You want to Shu Uemura Art of Hair brand, OP. I use Color Lustre but others are just as good. It seems terribly expensive but as you only need a blob the size of a pound coin for even long, thick hair, it lasts ages.

Greenteandchives · 07/10/2020 22:10

And don’t underestimate the difference a good quality silk pillowcase makes on your bed hair.

SharpLily · 08/10/2020 09:18

Olaplex does work best if you get the hairdresser stage done first - although it's still good without that. Do the hairdresser stage though, totally worth it, and then follow up with the full home care routine. You won't look back.

EffYouSeeKaye · 08/10/2020 20:20

What exactly is the hairdresser stage of Olaplex? Is it like a keratin treatment? I had that once and wasn’t too keen...

Darklane · 08/10/2020 20:46

Which of the Aussie ones do you think work best for this problem?

shuttheblinds · 08/10/2020 21:40

I have the same issues. You need Kerastase shampoo and conditioner, the pale pink/salmon coloured one, discipline range. And then I use the heat defence cream. Honestly I have tried alsorts, including Olaplex and this is the only one that makes a difference, and it is a real difference too.

SharpLily · 08/10/2020 21:49

@EffYouSeeKaye

It’s a mixture that’s put on and left like many treatments but it’s not available to the public so you have to get it done by a hairdresser. It’s nothing like a keratin treatment, just put in and rinse off and works in a completely different way.
