If you’ve got a shin length down coat where is it from?

I can’t seem to find very many options online. I’m looking for a down coat with a hood. Budget of up to £800. Its got to be good quality, warm enough to withstand trips to Norway. And I don’t want any flashy branding on the arm or whatever. Ideas?

I once spotted a woman in m&s wearing a gorgeous coat, it was really classy & a beautiful fit, I couldn't see any logos (I hate really obvious logos too) so I tried to be subtle but probably wasn't and I joined the queue she was in to try to get a better look. There was very subtle branding on the sleeve so I googled it when I got the chance, then balked at the price of the gorgeous Patagonia Tres parka eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/product/womens-tres-3-in-1-parka/28409.html
It was lovely though. It may not be as 'winter coat' as you're looking for though.

I love my Aigle coat! So warm it’s like zipping yourself into a wonderful cosy sleeping bag!

I have a North Face coat which matches your description. It’s black and fitted. Toasty warm. Has a hood with removable fur trim. It

Thehollyandtheirony · 29/09/2020 18:48

There’s a nice MaxMara one at Matches.

Land’s End Squall stadium coat super warm just over knee length.

MoltonSilver · 29/09/2020 19:27

You'll probably find a better, warmer selection of you buy it in Norway.

SpaceRaiders · 29/09/2020 19:55

Wow thanks for all the suggestions, lots of brands that I hadn’t heard of or considered. Not keen on the Lands end one, I’m so picky. Confused I’m currently mourning my 8 year old coat which is nearly as old as dd1. Matches one is good one...only thing downside is the baggy cuffs, snow up your cuffs isn’t much fun. I’m leaning towards Canada goose as it seems the best of the bunch...I just don’t want a logo. Wondering if I’d be able to pick it off without damaging the coat...

MoltonSilver is right, that's just what I was thinking.

Pack an old warm coat that you're not planning to keep, just to get you to a nice department store in Oslo, then go shopping. You're bound to find coats suitable for the local climate. So much more fun than buying online. If you don't find one, you still have your old coat. If you do find what you want, just throw the old coat away, and use the new one.

True, only this year were certain to be at home but I still need a warm coat. Did I mention I absolutely hate feeling cold? Grin

North face arctic parka. I've had it for over 10 years. In fact I rarely wear it because i get too hot in it !

Chicinwellies · 29/09/2020 21:23

Finisterre and musto. I live by the sea in Cornwall, both invaluable

nannykatherine · 29/09/2020 21:27

£800 !!!!!!😱

Desnol · 29/09/2020 22:05

If you don't have an old warm coat to get you as far as an Oslo department store, then I guess you're stuck, you'll have to buy something here.
How about this one? 80% duck down, 20% duck feather.

@nannykatherine I know it sounds obscene but I tend to look at it as how much it costs me over the time I use it. I had my last one for roughly 8 years and it’s still looking ok-ish. The poppers are falling off and the zip is on its last legs, cuffs are torn, its perfectly fine for dog walks messing around in the garden but not really smart enough for much else. If my next coat lasts just as long and I wear it for 6 months/180 days each year, it works out to be about 0.55p per wear which is good enough for me.

Thanks everyone. I’ve ordered a couple, hopefully one will be a good fit and I can return the other.

Everlane?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/09/2020 10:20

OP I would be surprised if the MaxMara one didn't have elastic inside the sleeves to keep out draughts. The wide cuffs are probably just to fit over gloves and look good. I've got a puffer coat from Phase Eight that has this.

Voodoorain · 30/09/2020 15:50

I have a Soia and Kyo, it’s for temps up to -30c (it’s a Canadian brand) apparently but I wear it here in winter as I am always cold.

SpaceRaiders · 30/09/2020 16:35

I’m loving all these ethical brands being suggested, thank you. I’ve just bought some fleeces an knitwear from Everlane.

Soia and Kyo don’t ship to the UK. Which is a real shame as their Rachlea coat in Moss looks so lovely.

Annebronte · 30/09/2020 16:59

Try the JulesB website. I’ve had excellent coats from there.

Voodoorain · 30/09/2020 17:24

I had my coat from Soia and Kyo shipped over by myus.com. You would have to factor in shipping and customs fee but that would still be well under your £800 limit.

SpaceRaiders · 30/09/2020 17:30

Oh...what have you done @Voodoorain. I really didn’t need that tip. Grin So many times I’ve been tempted to buy something from the US, only to find they don’t ship internationally.
