Comfy waterproof boots/shoes for long school run

PleaseGodLetItEnd · 29/09/2020 11:47

My school/nursery route is now around 4 miles, twice a day. Mostly pavements and a bit of park rather than off road.

So far I’ve been wearing some trainers which have been perfect on the comfort front but are no good when it’s raining (which it will be, a lot).

I’m carrying a bit of extra timber (hopefully all the walking will help) and I’m quite hard on my shoes. Oh and my feet tend to be cold. I had some Ugg leather boots last year (shorter school run) but I found they weren’t entirely waterproof and didn’t last that well. Hiking boots seems like overkill for the terrain. It’s too far for wellies. Help!

Check out Adidas Terrex -you can get gore-tex versions that look/feel like trainers and the have boost mid soles and grippy soles. I absolutely love mine. I walk the same distance as you every time and find them perfect.

They look promising - thank you. Do you need to size up? I find Adidas can be a bit smallish fitting. Can’t face heading to the shops so checking out my online options...

I’m a 5.5 in their Sense Boost trainers but went for a 6 in the Terrex to allow for thick winter socks. Also my feet swell when I walk and I walk a lot, whereas I only use my trainers for home workouts. The Terrex fit like a glove in that the tongue is attached to the shoe so I risked the bigger size.

I love my DMs and wear them almost every day in the winter. I've got the 2976 with fur lining and they are waterproof and warm 🙂

Alez · 29/09/2020 13:44

Tretorn have some waterproof shoes/boots that are like a hybrid of trainers and wellies. Or maybe try searching walking shoes on mountain warehouse and the like.

Fly London chelsea boots - comfy warm and waterproof

OpposableThumbs2 · 29/09/2020 15:00

I got some Fly London mes boots a few days ago. They are so comfortable. They look fairly waterproof although not been tested in more than a quick shower yet.

louisethedisease · 29/09/2020 17:39

I've got fly London salv boots but I'm now interested in the dm fur lined boots .

Are they proper robust like? I’ve heard rumours that DMs are not as good as they used to be (fond memories of ‘breaking them in’ back in the 90s only to come home and find my Mum had polished them up Shock)

I probably should have specified robust in the title. I am a destroyer of shoes (I’m a substantial unit and I move quickly). I did have a pair of Clarks gore-tex biker boots which lasted for 6 whole years until some straps fell off. But of course they’ve stopped making them now Angry

If you can find something you like the look of, I found Ecco boots to be amazing - light, comfortable, flexible, durable (I also destroy shoes but these have lasted me 4 years and are still going), the lot.

Mine have a slightly walking boot appearance but weigh no more than a trainer. I have issues with painful feet but didn't want something that looked like it had come from the hotter catalogue! Ecco had some dreadful things, but not all. It's worth a look.

I have avoided Ecco because of assumptions about their general aesthetic but I’m going to take a proper look - thanks.

If I could afford it I'd be buying the grenson Annette's. Sadly I can't so I've got a cheap dupe from Sainsbury's!

Callmecordelia · 30/09/2020 12:16

I got some barely used merrells on ebay and they are amazing. So warm and comfy, and no rain gets in at all.

Ooh I like those Sorels - I’m not so keen on their classic duck boot ones but those are quite pleasing to look at

Was going to say the same, they do plenty with goretex, that was what changed my school run, never had wet feet after that.
PleaseGodLetItEnd · 30/09/2020 20:52

Although I’ve also just found (and ordered) some end of line Clarks goretex Chelsea boots on eBay for a slightly smarter vibe.

I bought some Grenson knock offs from M&S in ?2018 but they were very much not up to hiking in

I know you said you thought hiking boots would by overkill, but I love my Scarpa Cyprus boots. Incredibly comfortable, fully waterproof, great grip. And of course, you can also wear them hiking!

I actually already have some hiking boots. Or more accurately, one hiking boot, as they got separated during a hectic house move and I can only find one of the relevant boxes up the loft. So I can’t bring myself to buy more. I also find them a bit rigid on pavement (fussy fussy)
