How to get rich girl hair

Do you know what I mean? Long, swishy, usually caramel coloured, yet frames the face well, doesn't just hang there. Really thick looking right to the ends. Looks low maintenance but can't tell if it is or not. I mean I presume it's styled somehow but it just looks like it falls into place naturally, which I suppose is the point

I like my hair long, and I like the look, but post pregnancy my hair is in awful condition and just sort of hangs around looking tired.

I'm not an entirely impoverished peasant, so I wonder is this achievable or do you have to be born with it?

I think a lot of women with hair like this get a professional blow dry a couple of times a week or have time to properly blow dry it themselves.

awsomer · 28/09/2020 08:33

Extensions and lots of hair appointments.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend extensions though. They can ruin your hair.

Rebelwithallthecause · 28/09/2020 08:33

My hair used to be how you described

Now 4 months pp is is limp and just hangs there

No idea how I can’t get that swishy thick and healthy look unless I add extensions

Here for the tips

onemouseplace · 28/09/2020 08:35

I think more people have (great) extensions that you would think.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/09/2020 08:36

Lots of people have hair extensions but you just assume its real.

Otherwise its about being born with good hair, making sure your colour suits your skin tone and making sure its washed and styled regularly. Mine is super thick and long, naturally brown but dyed with lots of caramel/honey tones to suit my warm skin tone, washed and conditioned regularly with decent shampoo and conditioner and then heat protector and I use bendy or velcro rollers on the ends to give volume and interest.

ReallySpicyCurry · 28/09/2020 09:04

I hadn't even thought of extensions, in my innocence! I don't think they're for me though!

It almost always involves hair extensions.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 28/09/2020 09:11

I have this kind of rich girl hair you're referring to. It's naturally straight and swishy and long. I shower in the morning and just let it drip dry and it's dry within half an hour. I dye my roots myself, everyone presumes it's natural dark caramel blond. I get it trimmed every few months straight along the bottom. DD does this now she's old enough. So I basically spend £6 on it every 2-3 months and use cheap old Alberto Bahlsam shampoo. When I can be bothered I use my babyliss curler for those big sexy Hollywood curls. I sometimes plait it when I go to bed. It's effortless and I don't have to think about my hair ever really.

Heated rollers and a little bit of this amazing hair balm will definitely help.

Personanotgarter where do you get that product?

PersonaNonGarter · 28/09/2020 09:32

It’s from Space NK (I did a click link Smile you can click on ‘Hair balm’)

Mrslafayette · 28/09/2020 09:38

Oh yes sorry missed the clicky link. Thank you. I have very dry hair that often looks frizzy. Will it help?

applepineapple · 28/09/2020 09:40

Living Proof Restore Repair mask makes my hair incredible (usually frizzy and colour treated). Also Olaplex, I use the whole system. It's not an overnight fix in the way that the mask is but I've definitely seen results over time.

doadeer · 28/09/2020 09:47

I think it is the same as having great skin, a mixture of maintenance and good genes.

Regular hair dye and deep conditioning makes my hair smoother and shiny but I think it's about how you dry it. If you can do a great blow dry/ straighteners / tongs etc.

I've been using olapex recently and that is nice. I've also tried function of beauty where they mix you a shampoo and conditioner

AriettyHomily · 28/09/2020 09:48

bLOW DRYS A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK

AriettyHomily · 28/09/2020 09:49

Ooops, sorry about the CAPS!

Bawbies · 28/09/2020 09:56

Not sure if this helps you op, but wanted to share useful tips I picked up recently which helped my hair to have more moisture and appear sleeker (usually prone to dry and frizz):

  1. use a silk pillow case (or you can get silk hair wraps that do the same job)
  2. use a shampoo without laurel sulphate (or anything that sounds like this - it strips the hair of it's natural oils). If you look at shampoo ingredients, they nearly all have laurel sulphate. I found the sulphate free ogx range -about £4 on Amazon and they are great.

It helped mine! I absolutely love it.

If you are feeling flush, try Christophe Robin Prickly Pear mask as well. £££ but just lovely.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 28/09/2020 10:00

I've seen tape extensions on youtube, rather than those classic style welded onto little bunches ones that looked amazing - I imagine the upkeep is quite something though.

Palavah · 28/09/2020 10:00

The rich hair thing predates extensions.

Good nutrition - plenty of good fats
Brush before washing, not when dry
Condition regularly w
Pin up or tie up with puns or one of those coil bands to avoid breakage.
Good regular trims
Decent highlights/balayage rather than all over colour.
And like everything else - sleep, fresh air and exercise, but mostly genetics!

PrimeraVez · 28/09/2020 10:31

My hair is like this (feel like a dick saying that) Like a PP it is natural and I really don't do much to do it. However:

  • Be really careful with hair ties, clips etc to avoid breakages. I very rarely scrape my hair back (if I put it up, it's normally in a messy bun with a scrunchie)
  • Only wash once or twice a week so it doesn't get dry or frizzy

Errr, that's about it. I get it cut a few times a year, don't fuck around with highlights, dye etc, and use whatever shampoo is on offer in the supermarket.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/09/2020 11:12

Get some really good hair vitamins too.

ooh, I'm super intrigued to know what hair dye you use, I would love not to have to have it coloured at the hairdressers
BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 28/09/2020 11:51

I wouldn't say I have this hair exactly, but I'm close. I suppose subconsciously I've been going for it a bit but whatever - I'm the happiest I've ever been with my hair atm.

  • It's about nipple length
  • Naturally medium/dark brown with good subtle balayage, I will get more in a few months so the ends are a bit brighter
  • Not particularly thick or thin, but looks much better if I blow it dry and then style (I can't do a blowdry on myself to save my life).
  • I did a Kerastase conditioning treatment at the weekend
  • I sleep with a silk turban.

Right now it's smooth and straight and swishy but with a bit of movement, as I washed and styled it yesterday then had to twist it up a bit to get it in the turban. I have lots of weak short hairs at the front so my hair looks better down.

Basically I think it is half genes and half maintenance.

It is a very white centric view though and calling it "rich girl" hair seems a bit problematic. Sadly everyone will know what that term is referring to though.
