Kids' clothes

Do you spend much on your kids' clothes, ie buying an expensive item in the hope that it'll be good quality?

I'm contemplating coats for my DS who's nearly 5, and I'm looking at Boden where some good quality looking coats are almost £70! But then even looking at supermarkets, they tend to be around £30. I have a younger DS who has already got really good wear out of a lot of DS1's clothes, so I'm wondering if it is worth investing in the hope things will last.

Plus I like the £70 coats Grin

I spend a lot and people probably think I’m crazy, but the good stuff I buy lasts years (I buy oversized!), unlike the cheap things that start to fall apart after a couple of washes.

ramarama · 24/09/2020 19:37

Sorry, but no. I feel like kids stuff is too easily lost, stained or torn - even good quality stuff - to justify that kind of expense.

I've stretched to maybe £40 for a Boden coat before, but I find you can get good quality stuff from La Redoute for a third of the price.

Get the £70 coat 😊

MsJuniper · 24/09/2020 19:40

I don't tend to buy expensive clothes but a coat can be worth it as long as you don't think it will be lost. Most of the cheaper ones are only water resistant or shower proof - I've been trying to buy one recently for my 7yo and it's not easy to get something that will really stand up to the weather without spending £££!

nevernotstruggling · 24/09/2020 19:40

I buy joules coats for the dds every 2 years they are well worth the cost and still look brand new. I sell them on fb.

When they were little I bought boden and they were great.

I spend more on heavy use items that are worn every day.

One year I bought next coats because a grey butterfly design was really pretty. Big mistake they looked cheap and scruffy in a few weeks.

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 24/09/2020 19:42

There are always discount codes for Boden...never ever pay full price!

ballroompink · 24/09/2020 19:46

I've managed to get quite a few Boden coats for my DSs from eBay and Facebook selling groups! But agree - the sales are always good. As I have two boys I prefer to spend a reasonable amount on decent quality stuff which will hopefully last both of them. If only DS1 didn't scupper this by going through the knees of trousers Hmm

wowsaidtheowl · 24/09/2020 19:46

We got bargain kids coats from the clearance section on the fat face website. £20 ish.

celerystix · 24/09/2020 19:47

I spend loads on kids clothes but DD2 gets the hand-me-downs.

£120 on toddler winter coat, £70 for toddler jacket, £45 for a skirt etc. But it's such great quality and so stylish.

Basics likes socks and underpants, it's George at Asda though!

SherryPalmer · 24/09/2020 19:47

I almost always buy my kids the waterproof ski jacket coat from Boden for winter. I normally try to buy in the sales but have sometimes paid full price and still think they are worth it - warm, fully waterproof, colourful and can go in the washing machine. I hand them down between my boys and give my dd’s old ones to a friend and they last really well. One time the zip broke after a few months and they refunded me and let me keep the coat.

tempnamechange98765 · 24/09/2020 19:48

Oh please post any discount codes for Boden you find!

I like Joules too but have never paid full price for anything as I wait for the sale days. DS has an age 4 coat from Joules which is lovely and I only paid about £30 for, but to be honest it's not waterproof, only shower resistant.

Boden coats are worth the money IMO. They’re warm, waterproof and pretty indestructible. We have one that’ll be on its 4th winter worn by 2 kids and it’s still in great condition. I also use a discount code though!

MissRainbowBrite · 24/09/2020 19:52

For proper warm, waterproof coats try Lands End. They're in a similar price bracket but regularly have 40% off. The quality is great and customer service is good too.

TheLightGetsIn · 24/09/2020 20:03

I buy good quality but normally 2nd hand, in the sale, or with a discount code. I also try not to buy too many items as they grow out of them so quickly.

I do spend quite a bit on outerwear as we live in a very cold and wet area so even decent-but-not-top-quality doesn't cut it unfortunately.

Whathappenedtothelego · 24/09/2020 20:13

Most of my DC clothes are second hand, but I will always pay for the best quality coats and footwear I can afford.
I think it's worth it for warm, dry, comfortable children. We live in quite a cold and rainy part of the country, and I don't want them arriving at school already cold and wet.

Coats can last two or even three years if you size up a bit, then get handed down to the younger one, then on to nieces or friends, so cost per wear is usually quite reasonable anyway, if you can afford the initial outlay.

Peachypips78 · 24/09/2020 20:15

I have a 15 yr old nephew, two boys of my own aged 13 and 10, and younger nephews of 7,5 and 3. I had Boden clothes that were given to us by my older nephew and are now being worn by the three yr old. And these are all boys who are hard on their clothes!

For us, Boden is well worth the extra and it's def a case of buy cheap buy twice in my opinion.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/09/2020 20:17

Ebay is your friend. Hardly worn designer clothing for pennies.

raskolnikova · 24/09/2020 20:27

"Ebay is your friend."

I was about to say this! I've ended up buying most of my daughter's coats and jackets from eBay. Good brands like Zara, Joules and Jojo Maman Bebe, but for a lot less than in the shops. Most recently I got her one of those Jojo fisherman's coats for £10, and it's in excellent condition. It's £36 in the shop.

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 24/09/2020 21:13

N9N7 was 20% off the other day. Hopefully that still works.

Pixie2015 · 24/09/2020 21:15

Boden kids coats great but I would only buy in sale or with at least 30% off

Fatted · 24/09/2020 21:18

I bought my DC good winter coats last year. They didn't wear them to school for fear of them being lost/stolen. DS1 has already outgrown his.

If your DC does not grow like a weed, then do it.

tempnamechange98765 · 24/09/2020 21:19

Thanks all, I've found a really suitable one in FatFace, £50 and it's sustainable too. Just watched David Attenborough's Extinction and it's scared me into less consumption and more sustainable stuff!

Agree about good quality hand me downs though, I have a new nephew a year younger than my youngest DS and so everything we have is being well used.

canigohomenow · 24/09/2020 21:22

I never buy first hand coats... Ebay all the way - you can pick up a Next 3 in 1 for a tenner if not less and they're always coming up.

CruCru · 24/09/2020 21:42

I like Landsend coats for the children. They are fiendishly expensive at full price but there's always a discount code.

WinWinnieTheWay · 24/09/2020 21:44

Boden will have 20% off soon
