WHat do you use to co-wash?

I started co-washing at the beginning of the summer. I've been using As I Am Coconut CoWash Cleansing Conditioner but I'm far from impressed by it. What do other co-washers use that they would recommend please? THank you.

I use Faith in nature Jojaba normally for cowashing. I get the 5l bottles and then refill. Ive also used the XHC ones - I prefer the ginger one. Then the Garnier hair food as a ‘proper’ conditioner. I’m wavy rather than curly with a lot of hair and very loosely follow the curly girl method.

I started the curly girl method a few months ago, I had not clocked the ‘slip’ and scrubbing — wondered why my hair just did not feel clean!!Hmm Will try it properly now.
I do rate the Noughty range tho, I use 1 hit Wonder then Wave Hello conditioner, you can get both in sainsburys. I will try the garnier tubs of hair food if I need to use loads tho as they are currently on offer in bootsWink

Can any curly girls recommend a gel?? I think you are supposed to use loads on wet hair but I buy the pink curl friends jelly from Umberto Gianni and it’s about £7 a tube so I don’t want to use handfuls of it as most of it just comes off on the towel.

I use a normal conditioner all be it one that is curly girl friendly i.e. no suplhates or silicon

I'm not sure where I picked up the tip, but I use a shampoo brush now when I Co wash and tbh my hair still doesn't seem not clean when I wash it, but usually is a frizzy mess that I can refresh!

On gel I would recommend boots essential but they seemed to have disappeared recently. I've got a VO5 mega hold waiting for when the boots runs out that's meant to be great. If you have a home bargains they're under £2 for 200ml. Still double the boots and Tesco (also seem to have disappeared) £1 options.

I was using boucleme gel to start with and didn't think much of it, realised I wasn't using enough and can't afford that constantly Blush

I have fine hair.

I use Faith in Nature Dragon Fruit.

I use the UG curl Jelly too. It is often on offer so I stock up then. I also use a handful of pantene mousse as well (helps the UG jelly go further).

You may find stuff with coconut doesn't agree with you. And anything with butters/shea etc maybe too heavy.

If you want to see if it is CG friendly find the ingredients online and cut and paste into here curlsbot.com and that will help. Saves peering at the ingredients on the bottle or trying to remember if the alcohol in the list is the only one that is OK because it is not drying.

WhereToCut · 11/09/2020 20:01

@OhLookHeKickedTheBall I find the boucleme gel works really well for a couple of uses and then my hair goes "nah, don't like it" and kind of goes dry and claggy. I am using up what I have on intermittent washes (but not more than once in a row) and then won't buy anymore. I think it has coconut in it (which my hair hates).

Wall0ps · 11/09/2020 21:55

Second XHC! I love the ginger one and use the strawberry on my cockapoo. We both have lovely soft hair although mine is wavy and his is curly.
99p a bottle, what’s not to like?

XiCi · 11/09/2020 22:03

Is this just for people with dry hair? I think I'd look like I'd dipped my head in a chip pan if I did this.

Mn2020Cc · 12/09/2020 00:17

I've done curly girl for about 3 years. My fave for Co wash is xhc ginger and lemon, leaves my hair really clean. I also use that to condition - why take 2 bottles in the shower 😁 but like a bit of garnier hair good now and again for a deep conditioning treatment. (although I think this is no longer approved by strict CG's)
I like the twisted sista curl gel in a tub, although it's very runny so I decant it into a travel pump bottle. Wilco and tesco own brand cheap gel are good too.

spookmeout · 12/09/2020 01:08

@grannieali when you 'wash' your hair with conditioner only. The key is in saturating your hair with warm water first, scrubbing your scalp to loosen any product and dirt, then using conditioner to cleanse. There are some specific products but with this thread I'm trying to understand whether you can just use any conditioner. I bought the As I am one, which is not cheap and specific, and found it poor. I've been co-washing for over a month and my hair looks as clean as it did when I used shampoo.

I've just finally started a go at cowashing this morning using faith in nature geranium & lavender conditioner & cantu gel/custard

My hair is very fine-could anyone recommend a hairdryer with diffuser please, or are universal diffusers as good?

Gotthetshirt23 · 30/09/2020 23:22

I've Co washed twice , with body shop ginger only to use it up .
Second wash last night and hair looks really curly this morning but BUT looks really lank / greasy too , am disappointed.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 01/10/2020 08:46

Cowashing does seem to work for everyone, I think if your hair is finer or low porosity then low poo seems to be the more preferred method. My hair is very thick and high porosity and cowashing has been a saviour.

With diffusers, apparently it's the method rather than the diffuser itself that counts. I've got a Remington version of the airdryer and have had some good results with that. Though I'm lazy and prefer to wash my hair in the evening, let it air dry then Medusa clip overnight (satin pillowcase helps here too), scrunching out remaining crunch the next morning.

silentpool · 01/10/2020 17:59

I think with co-washing, it works better if you've "trained" your hair to go longer between washes. I used the L' Oreal clay conditioner for oily roots and dry ends, last time for co-washing and that went fairly well.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 01/10/2020 18:58

My autocorrect keeps killing me. I've just seen my last post says 'does work' when I meant doesn't work 🤦‍♀️
