Does anyone still use a purse?

Honestly can't remember the last time I carried or used cash. If you use a card holder, how do you get on with it? And any recommendations for a nice leather one - up to £100 ish?

For those that want to downsize I can def recommend the Stocard app for loyalty cards. I've got 12 cards saved on mine so saves a lot of purse space. Have also registered my blood donor card online plus breakdown card so all I have left in my purse is 5 credit/debit cards, driving licence and 2 H&M £5 recycling vouchers (which I'm just about to use online - hurrah for free stuff!)

I have both, a tiny Oliver Bonas card holder and a small purse. I still use cash but not so much at the moment, as I am mainly using phone payments. That isn't always possible though, I tried paying for £50 worth of clothes with my phone last week and the shop had a £45 limit, same as normal contactless, luckily I had my cards. I also don't want to see an entirely cashless society.

I'd say the other issue I have had with the cardholder is that if you are rummaging around in your bag for shopping bag, mask, whatever, it's quite easy to pull it out by mistake and drop it as it's so small and light.

I have a phone case with that protection thing that stops you cards being cloned. It's leather and lovely and smart.

mynameiscalypso · 06/09/2020 11:08

I had a perfect card holder with a little coin purse - it was exactly the right size, an excellent colour and easy to use. Somehow, I managed to lose it over lockdown despite not leaving home for weeks. I'm still mourning it (not least because it had a Zara gift card in it). I've not found a good replacement yet - it's hard to find exactly the right thing.

I've never needed my blood donation card so never carried it, not totally sure what the point of it is? I've got most of my storecards on my phone now, still carry MyWaitrose as you need it to release the scanners (can't use the phone app easily with a mask on as my phone is face id), also carry National Trist and English Heritage plus a few cardboard loyalty cards from local shops. Stamps and the organ donor card I've been carrying since the 1980s.

I do. But I'm always surprised how expensive they are. I've got a lovely one pink and orange one I bought from mywalit in Italy with Christmas money. It was €100 Blush

It's a bit like this but a lot smaller and it's only the second purse I've had in about 25 years.

I don’t use cash - can’t remember the last time I did. Just use my phone.

jolokoy · 06/09/2020 11:44

I have one from Oliver Bonas too! They seem to have cornered the market.

woodhill · 06/09/2020 11:45

Yes I do for cards and some cash. I also bought a smaller purse in lockdown for 1 card and cash which I can attach my keys to

Saddleback Leather co., got it from Amazon, about £38. This is the dark coffee colour. It holds 4-6 cards in the left side, 2-3 in the right, long pocket each side for cash, stamps etc.
It's beautifully made & a handy pocket size. It does kind of force you to think about what you carry but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

EggysMom · 06/09/2020 12:47

I have a lovely Tula purse - I still use real money (!) which it holds plus my driving licence, bank card and christmas savings card - the things I use most often, or want to carry most often. I have a separate card wallet with my credit cards and all store cards; occasionally I'll move store cards temporarily into my purse if I know I'm going somewhere.

I'm a luddite. I don't even bank on my phone, let alone have all my cards on my phone!

Oblomov20 · 06/09/2020 12:57

Presumably I need to get up to date! Because I don't have any of my storecards on an app! And I use cash all the time.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 06/09/2020 13:01

I have the Anya Hindmarch zipped card case which was a splurge last year. I love it though, I only ever carry cards and a small amount of cash so I wanted something that I could keep for, basically forever!

Megan2018 · 06/09/2020 13:10

I’d love to not carry cash but live rurally and it’s a necessity! Not everywhere takes cards here yet, virtually no phone signal away from home wifi and most of the local parking requires cash.

TurnOffTheTv · 06/09/2020 13:13

What about when you need coins? For shopping trolleys or car parks for example? Where do you keep those if you are not carrying a purse

The supermarkets near me don’t have those, and I can’t remember the last time I paid cash for parking, I normally pay on an app

roundandsideways · 06/09/2020 13:13

I do, because it helps to organise my bag

TurnOffTheTv · 06/09/2020 13:13

I don’t actually carry a handbag either, I never have since the children have grown up!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/09/2020 13:15

I bought myself a new purse recently: handmade, leather with cardslots, closed by a sturdy zip.
It contains all my cards, recipts and actual money. I do not like to be totally dependend on sth. that relies on a external service provider. I still use a paper diary to avoid those 'google can't access'-moments that leave you with an empty calender.

EasilyDeleted · 06/09/2020 13:15

Yes, we definitely still need cash too, some car parks, patchy wifi/3g in more rural places.

I do like how much lighter my bag is with tiny card holder and small purse compared to my old huge purse rammed full of cards and heavy with coins. I still carry a few coins but put 5ps and coppers in shop charity boxes, save everything else for parking or just spend it again (or chuck it in DH's coin jar which he cashes up at Christmas).

citygirl1961 · 06/09/2020 20:09

I have a card holder and a very small purse. I live in a city but the beauty salon where I have my eyebrows done doesn't take cards, I also need cash for the window cleaner, taxis when I need them etc.

I have Stocard on my phone where I keep all the cards I don't use often but my main ones are in my card holder as I find the main ones don't scan very well in shops and the assistants have to punch in a long number anyway.

People who don't carry anything but their phones, how do you go on when you are taking lunch to work or carrying a laptop around? I have a small cross body bag but also a tote bag for other things I need when I'm out. As well as using my phone diary I also have a pocket size paper diary in my handbag as I like to use both.

tiredanddangerous · 06/09/2020 20:15

Yes because i still need cash. The two shops I visit most on my local high street (convenience store and pharmacy) won't accept cards for less than £5 so if I want to pick up a pint of milk or a packet of paracetamol, I need cash.

Chewbecca · 06/09/2020 20:22

I use a purse that also holds my phone & swings on my wrist like this - replaces my bag most of the time too!

Supersimkin2 · 06/09/2020 21:38

Teeny round zip-up one that clips onto keyring - perfect.

The Oliver Bonas suede coin purse has lasted better than the Mulberry one, incidentally, and is big enough for a card or two.

user12642379742146 · 06/09/2020 21:43

I switched to a cardholder because I didn't want to have to carry a bag anymore.

OhTheRoses · 06/09/2020 21:50

I have a weekend handbag. With a purse and all my bank cards, nectar, etc.

For work I use a big bag for laptop, day book, general papers, charger, etc. Inside I have a tiny bag with a Tiny purse that just takes my bank card, a few quid, lippy, phone, keys, etc. Don't need anything else at work
