Waterproof winter coat with a hood

Tenner · 06/09/2020 07:31

I need to replace my old tatty coat and I have long school runs now in a rainy part of the UK so I am after a winter coat with hood and waterproof-ish.

I have the Seasalt plant hunter on the list (Janelle is too long for my taste). Are there any others which are worth looking at?

My budget is £150 max and I am fairly tall (just under 6tf) - arms tend to often come up short.

This is the holy grail!

There aren’t really many good options beyond Seasalt tbh - Uniqlo might be worth a look, Tresspass, Joules, Target Dry, depending on taste/budget.

It’s a gap in the market I think. Not enough choice, if you want properly waterproof and warm.

Following with interest. I bought a down coat with a hood last year but it's only shower proof. I need something non sporty for work wear Agree there seems to be a gap in the market

Footle · 06/09/2020 08:08

Seasalt is waterproof and warm. I wash mine with Nikwax once a year and it goes on and on. Excellent buy.

pisspants · 06/09/2020 08:09

I got a lovely didriksons coat from go outdoors last year for about £120. It was. very plain looking on the hanger so nearly didnt give it a second look but it is perfect. It is not as bulky as most coats but is really warm and is def worth a look.

NotMeNoNo · 06/09/2020 08:12

Ilse Jacobsen.
Outdoor brands like Helly Hansen, Jack Wolfskin, Regatta (depends on budget) do ranges of parka type waterproof coats aimed at daily life rather than mountaineers IYSWIM.

minnieok · 06/09/2020 08:13

Mine is from mountain warehouse - 10,000 rating so great even in torrential rain and the removable inner jacket is certified as -30 so very cosy

minnieok · 06/09/2020 08:14

£100 I should add, mid thigh length

Brot64 · 06/09/2020 08:16

Try Arket, Icepeak, Danefae, Dreimaster or Patagonia (prices get steeper here though they are constantly on sale).

There are so many options and no gap in the market whatsoever, it's only that most of the options are not UK brands. The Scandinavia market for example, is ridden with just what you are looking for and they all deliver here or some actually operate with UK websites.

I bought a Didrikson coat after recommendations on here a few years ago. It's been brilliant and totally waterproof. Not high end on the style front, but perfect for my needs.

Tenner · 06/09/2020 08:35

thank you - will dig deeper into the Nordic brands (they may also be able to accommodate my long arms better too I hope).

Brot64 · 06/09/2020 08:43

@Tenner they would accommodate your long arms. I am 5'9, long arms too and it's never an issue.

Thesunrising · 06/09/2020 08:48

Icewear an Icelandic brand has some nice looking waterproof mid length coats - I’m eyeing up Dogg.

MagpiePi · 06/09/2020 08:49

Jack Murphy or Lighthouse Malvern. Long - as in calf length, but fairly lightweight. I wear a fleece or down jacket underneath in the winter.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 06/09/2020 08:52

I got one from Lands End. Has a nice big good and really warm and waterproof.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 06/09/2020 08:52

Hood not good

Tenner · 06/09/2020 08:57

thank you. I spotted a few I like (and some I love but way over budget Envy).

My plant hunter from sea salt has been really good and does keep me dry and warm, but I don’t feel very stylish in it, although I like you can cinch it in at the waist a bit.

However I’m short and somewhat round so it would probably look better on a taller slimmer person!

Notarealmum · 06/09/2020 09:21

I’ve been following these raincoat threads with interest and seen some great jackets - how about full length coats though? Personally, I need something mid thigh I can wear over dresses and skirts, but all I see are trench coats and I really want a hood. Any recommendations?

Tenner · 06/09/2020 09:25

not real, have you checked the Seasalt Janelle? Very long and hooded.

Something like the Joules Stormbridge would work

anon444877 · 06/09/2020 09:53

I'm going for a plant hunter this year - I've had a few down coats and puffers but it's been hard to get more than one year out of them for rips, down shedding etc.

Molecule · 06/09/2020 10:01

On a previous thread Protected Species was mentioned, they seem pretty stylish, and I am sorely tempted...

I have a North Face down coat which is totally waterproof (for dog walking!) - I got it cheaper at one of the outlet stores - Portsmouth I think - its been brilliant.

Notarealmum · 06/09/2020 10:48

Tenner, thanks for the recommendation, it’s a good length for a parka but I’d prefer something longer still.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/09/2020 10:59

I've just got this one which is on various sites in a range of different prices depending on size / colour but is generally outside of your budget. However, without knowing your size I didn't want to rule it out in case you can find a bargain.
