I want to wear make up but my skin sweats oil

Minutes after washing my face, my pores ooze. I've tried everything.

I really want to start wearing make-up (for me, nobody else).

I've tried porefressional, pore master, skin peels, everything. Porefressional was the best for me, I also used the setting powder and sprays.

Even so, after an hour I look like I've done a marathon.

So right now I just don't bother. Instead, my routine is to wash and moisture 5 times a day. (I also use the best moisturiser for my skin)

I'm early 30's and I'm unashamedly sad that the time for me to wear make-up and look pretty is never going to come.

I don't drink alcohol often and I drink plenty of water.

I think washing 5 times a day will be encouraging your skin to produce more oil. Try to reduce to twice a day

Whatdowehaveherethen · 04/09/2020 22:51

I have the best quality make-up going. I just can't use it.

I'm honestly brilliant at applying it, info it for friends and family, it's what I'm known for.

Argh!

@worriedandannoyed I can't, my face looks lipe a professional slip-slide after an hour or two. I've tried blotting and everything.

I hope you're no longer worried or annoyed. Horrible feelings to have x

You need to use facial oil. Sounds crazy but it will stop your oil over production. Neals Yard rose oil and body shop oil of life are wonderful. My skin is the same and it's been a revelation

Whatdowehaveherethen · 04/09/2020 22:55

@BetterEatCheese I tried the rehydrating rose facial oil. It made my skin even worse.

I have very oily skin too. It's often caused by genetics, hormones... Things we have no control over. No number of topical products will stop it, unfortunately.

Occasionally an 'oil control' type moisturiser will help for a couple hours, but I still end up blotting my skin with a tissue several times a day to get rid of the shine.

I put on light foundation sometimes but it usually melts off after a couple hours as well.

I think washing skin more often than twice a day would cause more problems...

pinkmummy1 · 04/09/2020 23:01

Following closely as I have the exact same problem. Even after washing my face in an hour I feel the grease coming out of my pores. I do put on make up but always end up washing it off.

PontiacBandit · 04/09/2020 23:09

My skin is the same. I use a mineral powder foundation, it keeps the sheen at bay until mid afternoon which is the best I can manage. I don't have a fix for eyeshadow though.

Henio · 04/09/2020 23:14

Have you tried the la roche posay effaclar range?

Illegally18 · 04/09/2020 23:16

Have you tried Clarins lotus oil. ?Dr Haushka also does an oil control one

Everley · 04/09/2020 23:21

Over-washing will possibly be making your skin think it is dry and may overcompensate. Perhaps try washing your face twice a day, it may take a while for your skin to regulate itself.

I have really oily skin and need to use a mattifying serum under a lightweight moisturiser. I like the Umbrian Clay serum from Fresh or Codage Serum No.2.

The only type of foundation I can get on with is a mineral powder foundation, either loose or pressed. Also swear by mattifying powder (Rimmel have a good one), blotting papers and a setting spray (Ben Nye Final Seal, Urban Decay All Nighter or NYX Matte Finish).

CarrieBlu · 04/09/2020 23:25

I have similar problems with oily skin and make up. It just slides down my face, always has done. My skin has been oily since I was really young and I hate it.

I tried loads of expensive ways to treat it, nothing really helped until I went against the advice that most people who know about skin give and I started scrubbing my face really thoroughly two or three times a day with St Ives facial scrub. I also shower twice a day and will wash my face with a bar of soap then too which helps it feel dry and oil free. Doing this means I can get a few hours wear out of my make up. But it’s probably not the way that people in the know would advise that you sort it and in the long run, it’s probably not doing my skin much good either.

PersonaNonGarter · 04/09/2020 23:49

Use the Clarins lotus oil.

This is a skincare issue not make up, so start with good full skincare routine am and pm. Blot with blotting papers and carry powder.

JMAngel1 · 05/09/2020 06:35

This was me.
Things that worked for me:
DIM supplement
Spearmint tea
African Black soap
The Ordinary L Ascorbic acid powder mixed into sunscreen - Etude House Sunprise Airy Finish is the best I've used for super oily skin - this will probably be enough to start with but as your oil production slows down with DIM abd spearmint tea, you may need something a little more moisturising like Hado Labo emulsion or gel cream.

JMAngel1 · 05/09/2020 06:43

Oh god and only twice a day - at night instead of vit c /sunscreen - use a retinol - I use A313 - start 2 x week and build up to nightly - the retjnol will help to dry you out.
For base, look to Korean or Japanese brands as they are the kings for dealing with oily skin (all that high humidity).

violetbunny · 05/09/2020 06:43

I have super oily skin. People who haven't experienced oily skin like this won't get it. The whole thing about overstripping your face is a load of bollocks in my opinion, it might be true for people with normal skin but in your case it's likely to be hormonal. I would recommend seeing a dermatologist if you can. One thing that has helped me is going on the pill. I take Yasmin and it's helped reduce oiliness and stop my skin breaking out as much,

bananamonkey · 05/09/2020 07:36

My skin (and hair) is the same during the times when I can’t take the combined pill (TTC/pregnant/BF). I read about drinking spearmint tea to reduce oil production and while it’s not been a miracle it has definitely taken the edge off until I can go back on the pill again (which is a miracle for hormonal oily skin).

Lardlizard · 05/09/2020 09:56

Try Estée Lauder the mattifier

learieonthewildmoor · 05/09/2020 21:37

Paula’s Choice has a product called “Shine Stopper”. Could be helpful.
Also maybe using a niacinamide serum to slow down your oil production?

^This!! Also isotretinoin/ Roaccutane could be a good option for you OP
There is no hard scientific evidence to suggest moisturising well / using facial oils tricks your skin into reducing sebum production. Dr Emma Wedgeworth a dermatologist previously has confirmed it was a myth - can link article if anyone is interested

Skin hydration and sebum levels are not the same. Sebum production / oiliness is down to sebaceous gland activity - which is primarily driven by genetics, hormones, humidity.

noseresearch · 05/09/2020 21:51

I’m currently taking spironolactone for my acne prone skin, still early days so haven’t had significant results yet - but just another option you could try with a Dermatologist. There is plenty of evidence to suggest it may reduce oil production in women
Less side effects compared to Roaccutane too

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/09/2020 21:55

Don’t wash skin with soap. Just plain warm water and a clean washcloth.
Don’t tone or moisturise
Use a mineral powder makeup. Use wipes to remove make up.

TorkTorkBam · 05/09/2020 21:57

Look at your diet. A lot of skin stuff comes from diet.

artyandtarty · 05/09/2020 22:06

OP I have (well I had) extremely oily skin, to the point where my make up slides off & if I put a fingertip on my face you can see the oil on my finger where the pad of my finger touched my face.

I've found that certain cleansers help with the oil production .... they are as follows:

Jan Marini bioglycolic oily skin cleanser- I use this on alternate days as it can be drying. This is an extremely potent cleanser & you must build up tolerance to using this one.

On the alternate days I use dermalogica dermal clay cleanser.

I also find that clay face masks x 1/2 tines per week are good for oil control.

My skin used to be terrible, lots of blackheads from the oil, but since I've started investing in cleanser I've noticed a huge difference, reduction in blackheads, clear & shrunken pores & less oily.
